A lot (sorry correction ALL) of the review sites I visit use flash for their videos. If the majority of sites I would visit are incompatible its not really going to be the ideal web-browser for me. If it means I have to use my laptop instead it kills the point of the ipad for quick media consumption.

Write to them and tell them to stop using flash and to join the 21st century.

I have Flash blocked on all of my macs. Code with standards or go home.

Youtube and Vimeo already serve h.264 so I don't see the point.

The only problem is youporn and I have to borrow my girlfriend's PC laptop for that (when she's asleep).

As a web developer, I HATE using flash. While it would be nice to have an on-off option on the iPad, I prefer to use HTML5. Its much more flexible, and is compatible with every (decent) browser. YouTube and vimeo both realized this, and are switching their desktop sites to HTML5

Flash

I was hoping this thing would have video iChat and Flash capability. The iChat I can live without, but I'm not shelling out half a grand for something that surfs the web but won't allow me to view Flash websites.

I hate Flash it's a pain in the arse. But I very often find myself out and about with my iPhone and I'll use an app to find a nearby store, bar or restaurant... and when I check out the website to see if it suits me, I can't even view the site half the time because of the absence of a Flash viewer.

I'd buy the tablet in a heartbeat if this wasn't a problem. But if it's already frustrating on the iPhone then I'm not spending another half a grand just to see the "no flash player" icon at four times the size...

Apple should be embarrassed.

Wow, some of you guys really don't seem to like Flash. However, the reality is that a huge number of popular websites use it for presenting their content and if you want to access that content you need to have Flash.

This isn't going to go away any time soon and we are far from the point where anything is going to replace it. HTML5 is great but only a handful of browsers support it properly and these have a tiny marketshare. Until such time as a majority of users are browsing the web with a fully HTML5 supporting browser then web developers aren't going to start replacing Flash with it.

Just as a few examples of things you CANNOT do on iPad as a result of it having no Flash are:
- No BBC iPlayer
- No ITV Player
- No Hulu
- No Zattoo

I'm also surprised that people haven't mentioned that iPad does not support Java. This is a pretty big deal too and one of the websites I visit regularly (F1.com Live Timing) uses Java. The alternative is to pay £19.99 for a dedicated iPhone application, which we all know will look like ass when scaled up on this thing.

There's also no access to GAMES outwith the App Store (unless you count crappy HTML ones). Think about how many people play Flash and Java games and think about how many more are being introduced to them via sites like Facebook. These people are not going to be able to access them on iPad.

FLASH needs to die a painful death. I loath it's very existence.

But it's not going to, unfortunately.

So really they should have included some kind of flash capability...

Link please to something you've done in HTML5 that's as good as good Flash.

I do not understand how Apple does not support flash,
Flash is a very important element of the internet, its like saying Apple does not support mp3 or GIF images,

its there, and you need to browse sites.
This means that the iphone and ipad are crippled systems to for browsing the internet.

I don't mind if you get an option to watch the same content based on different technology, html5 or silverlight, whatever it may be. But now, you can browse a lot of the web because of this.

Even if the future will change, that will take at least 3-4 years. Is there any point to get the ipad in 2010 when it will be internet ready in 2014? As for an e-reader, I still don't know but isn't the kindle a better option for reading?

btw, what does Apple use for videos on its website? HTML5 or quicktime? like on the ipad site
Is there any one else that uses quicktime other than apple?

No FLash = temporary pain for sites that didn't have the brains to make a HTML version, and long term win

Check the daringfireball.net article on WHY they don't have Flash
- It's not needed for video
- It's a resource hog
- It's buggy
- Apple can't control it - they can't improve it or sort bugs

I don't understand why people need flash so badly.

Not having Hulu isn't a deal breaker. I'm more concerned about the lack of multi-tasking more than anything.

unfortunately there is no clear video codec for HTML5, Apple wants H.264 which after 2010 is no longer be free to playback without paying licensing fees.

I hate flash as much as anyone less. Adobe sucks ass at making efficient programs. Photoshop is a dog and could be much, much more utilizing multicores and GPGPUs, but they suck. Flash is a CPU hog.

But I like Netflix streaming service, I like HULU. iPad == iFailAgain (like the newton).

Sorry all you HTML 5 nerds, Flash is here to stay. Too many content creators use it and HTML 5 has no visual design/development application.

Apple needs to get on board. The only reason Apple devices don't have Flash is that they want concessions from Adobe, instead of using the same Flash player as every other mobile device.

iPad w/No Flash = Horrible Web Browsing

I was more interested in hearing about the next iPhone this afternoon, but the iPad is a neat product...EXCEPT for the fact that it doesn't render FLASH!

Jobs was up on stage telling everyone this product gives the "BEST" browsing experience. How is that possible if it doesn't support Flash? Almost every major site has Flash, and a majority uses it for its main content.

CNET
HULU
NY Times
Washington Post
CNN
ESPN

You name it. There are soooooo many sites that use Flash, yet the iPad won't support those sites. How IN THE WORLD does Jobs launch a product that doesn't support an almost standard in web site development?

I know Apple and Adobe don't see eye to eye, but this is ridiculous! I see the iPad as a very "nice to have" product, and to be honest I would buy one to use around the house IF it could browse the web as well as a regular browser.

The iPad without Flash support limits it to basically browsing like you're on a larger iPhone. How disappointing. This product HAD great potential, but without Flash it's very handicapped.

If you go check out the keynote speech, you will notice when he pulls up the websites, tiny icons where flash would be go by pretty fast :p He sure did try to avoid them.

I block Flash on all my machines. I actually think that:

No Flash = The best possible browsing experience. Go figure!

With that said, also consider that this chip is brand new, Apple fabricated. Flash will need to be complied for it. It is possible that Flash could still be on the way.

Remember, Apple does not make Flash.

For those who think Flash isn't needed for regular web browsing...go to any major web site and you'll realize half the content is missing:

CNN
Washington Post
NY Times
ESPN
CNET
HULU
etc...

Flash is a standard development tool for the web now.

AFAIK, Cnet has an iPhone optimized version of their site with all their videos encoded for the iPhone. With the NyTimes app, you can watch video in-line and embedded with articles.

The others, I don't know about but I'm sure do or will have an alternative solution shortly.

the expected official standard adoption date for html5 is 2020

By apple pushing products like these they are forcing people to use everything HTML5 and Javascript has to offer. This will in turn mean less flash sites sooner than later. I for one think it's great because I hate working in flash and I hate visiting flash sites.
