cool, but it will be beta for 6 months, ready in time to ship with office 2010/11
video and chat worked pretty good for me.

Just don’t bother, really. MSN for Mac is a big FU from MS to the Mac community. Even tho I appreciate what the guys at Mac BU are doing it’s unfortunately not nearly enough.

At least they have the decency to not put ads in the Mac version. For Windows that comes only with a-patch and the like, which I find well worth it. The Mac version has far less that you have to turn off, it has no 'What's new in crap' window at startup and actually does a not bad job for what it does.

I hadn't even realised it was still carbon.

Sorry microsoft, but this is WAY too late. I'm from Canada where pretty much everyone uses MSN, but the trend is shifting towards Skype. I think they're realizing the move to more modern chat platforms (gchat, facebook messenger, skype, etc.) and aren't withholding features anymore to try to keep its userbase. Sorry but I left for adium a long time ago, and won't ever return. What did it for me? I was fed up with contacts changing their nickname to the popular song lyric of the week, and adium played nicely with my address book.

Skype has always been more reliable (network), feature-rich and stable (program) for me than MSN.

Beta has no Enterprise/Corporate Support!

WTF!

Nuff said....

Usual hopeless crap from MS.... Fail!

Most friends I know use MSN. I had a few problems with the old one, and tried Adium. Now I get all my friends from facebook chat via it too, and more of my friends have been moving to FB chat, but complaining about how it drops out regularly. So currently with Adium I get the best of all worlds but don't get video chat. If Adium got proper video, or iChat supported MSN/facebook then I'd go with whichever of them. Since MSN will now do video (if it works!), but not facebook chat, will still mean Adium's better for 95%+ of my use.

Probably.......

Just one guy, or maybe two, doing this work at Microsoft. I don't believe it's a high priority product.

Fail!!!!!!

Release Notes

2.1 Display pictures do not display in the conversation window

2.2 You cannot send files to your contacts.

2.3 You cannot make Audio/Video calls on some network configurations.

2.4 Some custom emoticons do not display

Why do they still try and fix this? sell it like you did with WindoZZZz Media player and let users get something worth downloading  (WMP not included) :D and bring back mactopia.com :D

Even though it is a beta, it is a pile of crap.

Things that are missing that would make it on par with the Windows version:

- Ability to set up your webcam (some sort of webcam settings)
- Ability to just have either your webcam or your contact's webcam on, not both at the same time
- Have the webcam video content embedded within the conversation window rather than a separate window (I know iChat does this, but I hate it..)
- When you "call" someone, your webcam window should appear so you can at least see yourself (in case you realise you look dreadful!) before they see you

Not to mention that avatars don't work, can't send and receive files. I can't get the webcam to work at all really either.

Well it doesn't make sense for MS to make an MSN user experience better on a non-Windows platform.
If people attempt to switch away they get a worse experience. If they're Mac users and use mac:msn then they get a worse experience so next time they find them on a windows box they feel that the MSN experience is better.. thus adds points to switching back.

Personally I find the MS approach to things just, well, crap.

personally i find myself using msn less and less.. i use mail to access my hotmail and i use facebook for chatting (if i feel like it).. msn was cool when i was 13.. but once i hit 16 or 17 forget it (im 19 now)..

This is great news, got plenty of friends not on Skype and on top of some of the video problems I've had with Skype lately, I'll give this a try

They could just offer to add MSN support to iChat properly. The workaround via jabber with msn transport is most unreliable, and clearly the new MSN is as well. I would love to be able to just use iChat.

When adium actually has video (its been soon on adium for as long as mac messenger) then i may be willing to switch. Until then i like my slow, bloated and buggy messenger for mac

If MSN Messenger has just *now* gained video support, what excuse do you have for using it all this time?

Could someone help me - I've downloaded Beta 8, click on video call and connect to a PC user, but we can't hear or see each other. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I have a macbook pro and new mac and video callling. PC user can't use Skype at the moment.

Any tips would be much appreciated!

Thank you

And it seems, after all that hype, MSN Messenger 8 is just another slow, bloated, buggy*, featureless pile of bile. It has video, big deal. So will Adium soon.

Come on MS! To make a MSN for mac you need to:
  • Support ALL of the features that the Windows version has
  • Support Growl
  • Stop the bloatedness, my fans were blowing after only 10 mins of video use!
  • Make it look like Mac. This is more Gnome.

*I know it's a beta, but I cannot imagine the real thing being any better.
