Still no word on any other features:

• Handwriting = Nope.
• Logging in from two machines at the same time = Nope.
• Messenger Games = Nope.
• Groups (introduced in the latest Windows Live Messenger) = Nope.

You missed one major feature: send and receive offline messaging. I have to use WLM regularly just to check if anyone send me a message while I am offline.

"Corporate Sign-On is disabled".

Glad I unchecked the default option to remove older versions.

Would be nice if MS put that in the announcement.

Why would you upgrade if you are using corporate account? Corporate account supports A/V in version 7.

I just use Skype, even though it's a horrible application that crashes every 10 minutes and the interface is horrid and buggy (even if it's still much better than the Windows version). MSN is just horrible on both operating systems and I convinced all of my friends to go on Skype. I just email with the rest.

I want an instant messaging client that has a nice interface and that works well, and that combines MSN and Skype contacts in one App! Adium doesn't do video and audio and iChat sucks because no one uses iChat, given that 99% of my friends use Windows, so they can't use it even if they wanted to.

Someone has to revolutionise instant messaging here (not Apple this time, please).

Are you looking for an answer other than because I'd like to see if bug fixes are included with the newly release A/V support on the consumer side - essentially the functionality that's been available to the corporate side for over a year?

Maybe I was hoping that the new beta would include some advancements on the corporate side as well. Didn't imagine the corporate side would be completely disabled. It's not like version 8 will eventually replace version 7 or anything.

iChat sucks because no one uses iChat, given that 99% of my friends use Windows, so they can't use it even if they wanted to.

... you *do* realize that iChat is just an AIM client, right? You can chat with any Windows users who use the countless AIM clients out there, right? And you do realize you can chat with audio/video with Windows users over AIM, right?

... right?

iChat Support

The MacBU team should give up on making a full program and just work on adding MSN support to iChat, this would take a load off their work because clearly at the moment they cannot handle making MSN by themselves.
Give up on making your own MSN and just give iChat MSN support, it would be so much easier for you and the rest of us!

And it seems, after all that hype, MSN Messenger 8 is just another slow, bloated, buggy*, featureless pile of bile. It has video, big deal. So will Adium soon.

Come on MS! To make a MSN for mac you need to:
  • Support ALL of the features that the Windows version has
  • Support Growl
  • Stop the bloatedness, my fans were blowing after only 10 mins of video use!
  • Make it look like Mac. This is more Gnome.

*I know it's a beta, but I cannot imagine the real thing being any better.

I have Growl installed on my MB but I have no idea what it REALLY does - came installed; suggested with Adium installation. :(

I can call and video conference with MSN LIVE clients from Yahoo Messenger.

nice, but can YM be used in iChat with Video conference to MSN Live users within iChat?

... right?

The problem here is that AIM is common in the US, but not in Europe. Almost everyone here uses MSN (or better yet used, IM seems not to be a big thing anymore).

I was like the only one from my friends with an AIM account to talk with my US buddies. That was before Skype came along. They mostly didn't even know what MSN was.

When I changed to the Mac, I tried using iChat but for the same reasons as the poster above I abandonned it finally. It's just no use when only 5% of the friends are on (and in my case for most situations a classic email solved the problem.)

And the "you can chat with audio/video with Windows users over AIM, right?" that's purely theory in my opinion. It might work now, but about 4 years ago it never worked longer than 2 minutes and something on the Windows side got wrong. And Skype for Mac didn't had (official) webcam support back then.

Just wanted to clear the AIM/MSN situation up a bit for those who don't have a clue about how it's on the other side of the globe.

For me, I will stick with the current MSN version.

I am a software developer and I have never released a beta software this buggy in my life, and I don't have a giant organisation to find problems..

What I do, it's quite amazing really, I test it before I release it as a beta, and you will never guess what else I do... I FIX THE BUGS!!!!

It seems to me they are just not interessted at all in msn messenger on mac, otherwise they would have at least after all these years bring out a beta that would work.

Will this let you hook into a Communicator 2007 server and use OCS to chat with Communicator users on a business network?

Or is this just 'MSN / Windows Live'

ARE there any OCS communicators with audio/video that can hook into a corporate communicator server?

The Messenger:Mac v8 beta is focused solely on personal usage.

For those of you who are in corporate environments using Office Communicator Server 2007 or later, you can already do video chats with Messenger:Mac v7.

Nadyne.

Forgive me for being rude but SO? That doesn't mean Microsoft has to hold back on exciting features other messengers, including MSN, have had for years. Not everyone who uses MSN Messenger, weather it be Mac or Windows, is a corporate user. Holding back on features that already exist just spoil the other crowd is unfair.

I honestly have no idea why people use MSN Mac. My sister uses it and refuses to use Adium because "it sucks", when she has never used it in her life. They should just give it up and everyone should use the far, far superior Adium or aMSN.

It's not a question of holding back on exciting features. In the case of AV, it's been a technical issue with regards to video codecs.

Remember that there's Messenger for personal use, which goes through Microsoft's servers, and there's Messenger for corporate use, which goes through your company's servers that are running Office Communicator Server (OCS). This is important here. :)

OCS and personal Messenger have been planning on going to a single video codec for quite some time. This was great news for my team -- supporting only one video codec makes our code cleaner and easier to maintain. Since they were both working on the same codec, we focused our efforts on that single codec instead of splitting our efforts and coding towards both the existing codec used by personal Messenger and the new codec that both OCS and personal Messenger would support.

OCS got out the door with the new video codec first, and we started supporting AV chats for OCS in Messenger:Mac v7. But on the personal side of things, Messenger had some delays in getting the new codec out. We didn't anticipate that it would take that team as long as it did.

They've got the codec ready on their end for personal Messenger, and so now we're in public beta for Messenger:Mac v8.

Nadyne.

Anyone know if they've added offline messaging?

EDIT: Looks like I missed the answer above. No, then.

At least this beta doesnt use 100% cpu like the old internal alpha leak did, think thats the only improvement though....

Thanks for posting this...with me not being able to change my MSN screen name within the client itself, I was getting tired of the bugginess. Haven't installed adium yet because I haven't had the time, but I am definitely giving it a try.

Adium is WAY better. At first I hated it, it takes awhile to get use to, but so does using a Mac.

The only reason I want MSN 8.0 is for webcaming with my friend without the inconvenience of making her having to login to Skype each time. For now I just switch over to Windows to do it, but it's a hassle.
