I'm getting a new battery......inside a brand new 2017 model :D:D

Just had a call from the Store, it's been built and shipped, and is currently in Almaty in Kazakhstan, due to arrive on Monday.

I'm over the moon. Originally they offered a refurb 2015 with no discrete graphics. I asked politely if it was possible to have one with discrete graphics as by old one did, they upped the offer to a 2015 with discrete graphics and 512GB SSD, they then called to say they had trouble getting that spec so upped it to the 2015 with 1TB SSD. They then called again offering me a 2017 model but apologised as it would only have the 512GB SSD. :D

So I'm going from a mid 2012 2.6 16GB 512GB with 650M to a 2017 2.8 16GB 512GB with the 555 2GB VRAM - May god strike me dead if I ever say a bad word about Apple again!

Hey so the same thing happened to me. I initially went to ask for the battery replacement yesterday and today they called and said they found a 2015 available. Were you originally offered the 2015 2.2 Ghz model with only Intel Iris Pro graphics?

I do like the occasional gaming on my Mac and I'm a little disappointed it only came with integrated graphics... I was in a rush and I didn't notice until I got home though.

Should I go back with another appointment to see if I could get another one with discrete graphics?

Wondering what horrible things I'd have to to my mid-2012 Retina MBP with 354 cycles, 87.9% battery capacity remaining, for it to somehow qualify for a rMBP 2017 replacement
(besides re-replacing the jet drive with the original Apple SSD of course).

I literally had to replace my Jetdrive lol before I took it into Apple...just to get told my 82% didn't warrant a free battery and that'd it'd be $400+ for a battery replacement.

I've been running mine more on the battery since last week as it had been showing something like 83% capacity but was somewhat unpredictable, shutting down when low on battery but before the "low battery warning" appears. This has continued to get worse, and now it stays around 75% capacity under load (the "Design Capacity bar in coconutBattery turns yellow and then orange when this happens) and remains at 75% when recharging (but the bar returns to green). It stays at 75% when fully charged, but will then very slowly creep back up to 81% given enough time. Battery temp at 102.5 deg currently charging with 631 cycles.

I'm taking it to the Apple Store on Friday and we'll see what happens.

I'm hoping I'll get the same CRU option as my battery is much worse than I thought, and the rMBP continues to go dark before I get the low battery warning (when photo editing), like I crossed some threshold where the battery just suddenly dies. coconutBattery shows a green "design Capacity" bar, then quickly drops to yellow or orange?, and today turned red reporting 70% capacity, but then it seemed to recover itself, turned green with maybe 78% capacity then just died on me with no low battery warning. I let it sit awhile but didn't plug it back in to see if it would recover a bit and at least power up long enough for me to close/save what I was working on but this didn't work. It remains unresponsive and a long press of the power button only displays an depleted battery graphic with icons to plug it in to charge. Very frustrating.

If your old computer ha discrete then their policy is to replace with an equivalent or better, so you should go back. If your old computer did not have discrete, then their policy is to give you a new non-discrete computer.

If your 2012 had discrete graphics, definitely ask if they could find one with discrete graphics.

It was the first Genius I took it into who said that I would get a 2015 2.2Ghz with just the iris graphics. When a second Genius called me (The one who I've been dealing with since), I asked nicely the question as mine had discrete graphics. He said that they had a list of matching models, so he said he would ask for a top spec one with discrete graphics but he said the team in Ireland would make the decision, but if they said no to that then it would be a lower spec one with discrete graphics. So it does sound like they have a list of options they can recommend based on your original spec, so it's worth asking them.

Do you guys think I'd have any luck ~ Coconutbattery showing 79.5% and macOS battery: Normal. I've been trying to go through battery cycles like crazy the past couple of days and I swear the reading from Coconutbattery is different everyday.

Went in 2.5 weeks ago and successfully got a work authorization for a replacement computer. They called a few days later on Thursday asking for payment, and said that it would take 7-10 days to hear back. It has now been 13 days, and I still have not heard anything. Any idea if calling the store, or apple support can elucidate the date I can receive my new computer?

Does anyone have any experience with them offering replacement on a mid-2012 15" 2.6/16/256/NVIDIA or units with upgraded hard drives? (took mine to 1TB three years ago)

When I first heard about this a week ago, Coconut had me at 81.3% with 462 cycles. Since then I've seen and saved reports showing 70's, 60's and even a Total Capacity in the 50's. I find it lowers under load or when the battery is drained and can jump wildly just by doing an unplug/replug.

That was the config for my mid-2012. My battery performance was getting really bad, and I kept on getting a Service Battery status. So I took it in to the Genius bar and they ran diagnostics on it, which showed that the battery needed replacing. And they replaced it with a new 2017 MBP. Nice.

I'm in a similar boat here with Coconut. Shows 80.1% when it's plugged in, but when I'm stressing the computer out it dips to 76%

Mine is a 2012 15" RMBP 2.3GHZ... I already had the battery replaced once under AppleCare. The replacement battery is at 466 cycles and currently under load showing 77% health. These batteries are just crap. mine jumps from 81% to 72% and all points in between. Being that I have already had the battery replaced once under AppleCare... and the screen replaced under the repair program... thats a lot of stuff to fix on a machine... I wonder what my chances are of just getting a replacement machine. Would be nice for sure.

Not one thing in my unit is original. Mid-2012 rMBP 2.6/16GB/256GB/GT650M CTO

Replaced screen for bad pixels in the first month.
Upgraded SSD in 2014 to 1TB.
Replaced top case due to bad battery in 2015. (AppleCare+)
Replaced Motherboard in 2016 due to GPU extension program.

Currently showing 79.2% at idle on Coconut @ 467 cycles. I've gone as low as 57% on load.

My MBP (a 2015 unit) shows 2 different values between coconutBattery and Apple's app, sometimes as great as 4% difference with Apple showing a higher battery charge than coconutBattery.

Anyone else see this on their systems?

He's
what is apples app?
king about looking at "About this Mac" and going to "System Info" checking the "Power" section for the current Total Capacity.

I only see different numbers when the System Info is left open and I unplug/replug. Coconut changes dynamically while I need to leave and refresh the System Info.

Actually under System Preferences you can configure the menu bar to show the battery status with % shown. That is where I see the 4% difference.

I have a mid-2012 MBP retina. Just ticked over on 5 years old.

The battery is doing ok, 300 cycles and 83% capacity. However, I'm wondering should I get this booked in for a battery replacement now?

According to Apple (https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201624), vintage/obsolete products are no longer eligible for repair (including batteries). Vintage/obsolete is at any time after 5 years.

What would you do?

Looks like logoc board issue. There are few websites like http://www.macbooktraders.com who buys them for good price, try if you can sell it and get some money for new one.

I only have two reservations about going in with my 2012.

a) I live 90 minutes from the closest Genius bar.
b) I use BootCamp to load Windows and am scared to be thrown back from my upgraded 1TB to a 256GB model. (I could live with a 512, if necessary)

Yeah if discrete means the dual graphics with both dedicated and integrated graphics? My old one had Intel HD 4000 and NVIDIA GT 650M.

This thread is just marvelous. It's filled with intensely happy people who received a brand new MacBook for basically nothing 5 years after purchase.
I have a first batch retina with bad battery myself so I'm thinking about taking it in, too bad I found this thread just now because I'm going on vacation on Monday :p I made an appointment for this Sunday but I'm unsure if I should go (I need to bring my Mac with my on vacation).

Are there experiences here from people in Europe who successfully received a new laptop?

Penultimate update:

I received my 2017 (2.6, 16gb, 512gb) on Thursday, I was called on Tuesday to collect. For those still waiting my timeframe was as follows:

23/06 - Genius app
24/06 - CC details sent
1/07 - call received from Apple to confirm which model I will receive. I attempted to upset to a 1tb but was advised as this was a repair, that option was not available.
11/07 - call received to confirm my MacBook Pro was available for collection

One item of concern - when I look at the display settings under about my mac - it shows Intel HD Graphics 630 1536 MB, I was advised that I would be receiving the Radeon Pro 555 with 2GB memory. Is this one and the same? Or is this a mistake by Apple?

For ref, Im a UK user.

Regards

Don't worry, it has the 555.
Download gfxcardstatus and set to dedicated. Then recheck system info and it will appear.

Interesting to see that Apple wouldn't upgrade your SSD (I assume you offered to pay the difference?). Can't say I'm surprised that it isn't possible, though.

Apple initially called me (same day after the Genius bar appointment) to offer a 2015 model (2.5 GHz, 512 GB) and take my card details. A few days later they called again to tell me the 2015 wasn't available and that I'll get a base model 2017 with 256 GB, and asked which colour and keyboard I wanted.

Afterwards I thought about calling back to ask if I could pay to upgrade the SSD, but in the end I didn't get around to it. Hopefully 256 GB will be fine for the next several years. I just have to store my photos and music elsewhere, as I've done since 2012!

FYI, I am in Europe. Had a 2.3 GHz 2012 with 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB SSD, and a US keyboard.

10/07: Genius appointment
10/07: First call from Apple for card details, confirming 2015 model replacement
13/07: Second call from Apple, confirming switch to 2017 model. Credit card charged for €209
