damn, missed out on it!

does anyone know when YourTube will be released for 4.0? I used that app with my 1st gen and 3GS; loved that app.

If I download to a newer software update, do you think MiTube will still work?

If your just looking for a way to save Youtube videos, here's what I use.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006/

Only works with Firefox, but at least it can save videos. Now getting them on to your phone, that's a whole other matter.

But glad I grabbed Mitube. It will definitely come in handy since I live in an Edge only area.

In my opinion, this plugin is the best YouTube downloader. If you have Firefox, you'll need to install the GreaseMonkey plugin first, and a similar equivalent for Safari, but it works out of the box on Chrome.

I've never needed a plug in to download videos through Safari. Just go to the Safari Windows menu. select Activity, find the YouTube page (if you've got a few windows open), and look for the largest file on the YouTube page, then double-click). The file is then downloaded to your computer, you may need to convert the file to an iPhone friendly format though, but you can find freeware that'll do that.

There is now a YouTube download extension in safari 5. There is a button on YouTube above videos now that you can select to download in hd or lower quality formats.

Could you provide a link to it? I can't find it -- might not be available for Australians.

I have to hold the option button when I double click on the file but this will work for any video playing through Safari, not just YouTube.

I'm glad I downloaded to my computer yesterday from iTunes. Still have not put it on the phone but atleast I have it now.

So it's gone? Yay! Glad I acted fast!

Btw why would apple care if we download YouTube videos?

Are there any details for why this was pulled? As others have said, there are several apps in the store which perform this function. Personally I love iCab for this reason.
It sounds like the issue may have been with private API use or donation requests within the app.

Because downloading YouTube videos is unlawful under copyright laws, and acting as publisher and distributor for software primarily intended to do something like that might well make Apple a secondary infringer and make them laible for damages in the same way Napster was.

Apple letting something like that through opens them up to very big legal risks.

Other apps' (in the AppStore) primary function isn't to download YouTube files, letting an app through that has the sole purpose or at least one of the main purposes of downloading YouTube would be blatantly disregarding the YouTube TOS, and possibly put Apple at legal risk.

I don't think Apple allowed that Safari extension, that looks like it was all a third party with no connection to Apple's doing.

What are these other apps? And exactly how do you do this in iCab?

I wasn't referring to the Safari extension. This is a well integrated function within several iPhone apps. But you are right, in that it is not the primary function of these applications.

Apply the "Watch Videos Offline" module in iCab. You may also want to increase the download limit in the settings applet.

Browse to the youtube video you want. Click the modules button and select "Watch Videos Offline".

edit - hmm. it's not working for me right now from my iPhone, but the iPad version is fine.
edit 2 - I just tried again and it is working fine on both the iPhone and iPad.

I know, that bit was directed at the following post.
I want to know this also because they have allowed a YouTube download extension on safari!
