I still hate the blackout restrictions since we cut the cord, and I'll be unable to watch Phillies games while I'm home. I'm still going to purchase the package anyway because I just love watching baseball in general. Plus, we get the premium MLB at bat app features for free.

Has anyone else noticed that the MLB.TV app for the new ATV is currently down for maintenance? I presume they're updating the app before the start of spring training games.

I live in Dallas and Houston games are blacked out here .... I get extremely screwed by the blackout restrictions.

Last season, for only $2/month, I used a service called Ad-Free Time. It's a smartDNS that supports MLB.tv. It gets around the restriction. Check it out here: https://adfreetime.com/a/521 I did a lot of searching, and this smartDNS is the least expensive that supports mlb.tv.

I cannot guarantee that it will work with the mlb.tv update they have planned for the new ATV4. I can say that their customer support is very responsive and helpful, and $2 is a pretty low risk.

I've used another smartDNS service with my Apple TV and they work great. Here in LA this is one of the only ways to watch the Dodgers is to order MLB.TV and use a smartDNS. It gets around all blackout restrictions. Also is great if you're a fan of TV from other countries such as the UK. You can set up your Apple TV for Apps such as BBC iplayer and watch here in the states.

I'll have to check this out. Not that I'm going to cry if I can't watch the Phillies, but it would be nice to get around this considering we don't have cable and most games this season will be on CSN Philly.

cant get onto the site here at work. I really want to try this for the Dodgers. Do you have to jailbreak your atv for this to work? Is it an app? kind of confused how these things work and the internet providers not realizing what you are doing.

Check out the site at home, their site explains it well.

You do not have to jailbreak. You do have to manually set the DNS settings, either on your ATV itself or on your router, whichever you prefer. You then have to "confirm" your IP with them by simply logging in once from your home. That's it.

I should note this does not work on iPhones and iPads. But it did work very well on my ATV3.

As far as I understand, the MLB checks for your location in one of several ways. First, I think they rely on your credit card billing information. Second, they use the location of devices that have GPS, like iphones and ipads. Third, they use the location of your internet connection. To spoof this last part, the smartDNS server reroutes your the portion of your traffic that identifies its location through their own servers, making it appear that you are where their server is.

Maybe you could answer a question for me since I do not watch a lot of sports but my visiting family does.
1. I am in Los Angeles. Would a San Fransisco Giants Game be Blacked Out when playing in SF?
2. If I go back east to visit my Daughter would I be able to watch a Dodgers Game being played in Los Angeles. I mean since I am located on the east coast but my billing is in the Los Angeles Area which one would override?

Seems pretty dumb that they have all of this black out stuff when you are paying for the content.

Also, anyone know if this is how Sunday Ticket works? Seems like my son had a number of issues with Sunday Ticket here in LA. But I wonder if he was traveling to the east coast would that override the billing here in LA?

I agree. The blackours are completely and utterly asinine.

I am not sure how the billing address blackout works. I've read somewhere that says they will blackout all games local to that address. I've read elsewhere that people use mlb.tv to watch their local games while traveling, which indicates obviously the address alone does not cause the blackout. For me, just in case, I have a friend living abroad do the billing and I venmo him the money in advance.

Check out this blackout map, it should answer your geographical questions. As you can see, totally idiotic. Poor folks in southern Nevada are blacked out to 5 teams: Oakland, SanFran, LA, Arizona, San Diego. People in Iowa are also pretty unlucky to be "local" to 4 teams. It's a total joke.

I don't know anything about Sunday Ticket, not really an NFL fan.

MLB.TV blackouts are somewhat different than this map. Enter your zip code on this page to find out who is blacked out in your area.

You should not be blacked out when traveling out side these areas.

I have had no problems using the smartDNS service I use for MLB.TV with my iPhone or iPad as long as I'm on wifi. Just make sure to turn location services off. It's very easy to change DNS settings in iOS. My credit card billing address is from Los Angeles as well.

Ah, admittedly I never tried at home on wifi because that is where my ATV is. I read some stories on other forums about the credit card billing thing, so I just made sure to not use one with my area just in case because it was easy. Thanks for confirming it's a non-issue.

The real unknown right now is whether the new and updated MLB.tv app on the ATV4 (which does have location services in tvOS) will present any problems.

Any information on as to when the new App will be released?

It's anyone's guess. The first spring training game of the 2016 Season is Feb 28, so I would expect the app to be available by then.

Last year, they updated the app on Feb 27 when the first sprint training game was Mar 1.

I am an avid Mets fan that lives in Iowa. I'm a long-time subscriber to the MLB app. Every year I get frustrated when I'm blacked out for "local" teams that are 4-7 hours drive time from my house (see below).

I got an email on February 15th about the class-action settlement against MLB. The proposed settlement would have the prices reduced (MLB is definitely doing this based on their new pricing) this year along with a number of other changes. The black-out restrictions are eased for $10/month. Another change is the ability to subscribe to only one team for $84.99. There are other proposed changes in the settlement, but these are the main points.

MLB announced that Premium subscribers get 60fps on live-streaming. This is available on new apple tv, iphone 6+, iphone 6s+, ipad and other non-apple devices.

I used the link someone posted and here is my blackout list:

The following Club(s) is within the searched home television territory, and is subject to MLB.TV blackouts in the U.S. for all live regular season games:

  • St. Louis Cardinals
  • Minnesota Twins
  • Chicago Cubs
  • Milwaukee Brewers
  • Kansas City Royals

Approximate Zip Code: 52302

Note MLB.com live game blackouts are determined in part by IP address. The zip code search is offered for general reference only.

You can disable location services in ATV4. I have them disabled on mine so I can run the BBC Player app here in LA. I know The NHL app was just updated and that is now run my MLB (yes, I know crazy). After it was updated, it took a few days but that now works fine with the SmartDNS. I pay $4.95 a month for my service and it is worth every penny!

I just checked the Apple TV App Store and it appears to be the old one.
Yeah, same here. The iOS version was just updated, but it doesn't look like the tvOS app has been updated yet. Hopefully soon...

Yep, it's completely ridiculous. I went to school in western Illinois (in the Quad Cities, Illinois/Iowa border). During that time, I canceled my MLB.TV subscription since I couldn't watch any games with the Cubs, White Sox, Brewers, or Cardinals. At least I live in AZ now and am able to watch all of my favorite teams.

I will probably buy MLB TV for ATV4, however I truly want to see the Texas Rangers. Hopefully the various DNS tricks will help.
Unrelated: does anyone know if T-Mobile will give us our free MLB At Bat this year?

Hmmm still no update. And I beehive the first broadcast of a spring training game starts tomorrow. Hope we see something in the next 24 hours. But I have a feeling they don't care about getting it updated before spring training. There probably just shooting to have it out before the actual season starts. They sure have had plenty of time to work on it though! Since the previewed it back in September.

It would be weird to release it just before the first regular season game; it's a high risk strategy in case something goes wrong. Plus, releasing it now would probably enhance the sales for the Spring Training games...

Can you buy this via iTunes like you can HBO Now, Showtime, PGA Live Tour etc.? Or do you have to purchase on the MLB Web Site?

I am waiting for the New MLB App before I purchase.

Looks like the spring training games are showing up now, but the app looks the same as last year.

Yup! Watched one today. Still no app update though. Hope it is at least getting approved by Apple right now.
