what is this carrier update you guys keep talking about? sorry, i'm new to this haha. But why should I have to "hack" or "jailbreak" my iphone to get mms? shouldn't i just have the software update for the iphone and be good to go?
Yes, just wait until Friday. Those of us who haven't waited are seeing early results. It's not jailbreaking, but don't do it if you don't want to. No biggie.

So this has very little to do with the thread but I'm not a fan of making threads in the iPhone forum about AT&T and I'm sure we can all enjoy a little "Verizon Math" story AT&T style.

I have the $39.99 rate plan and while looking to see if my "opt out" was gone as well I remembered that when the iPhone 3GS came out my rate was reduced to $33.99, I also realized that I haven't seen this on my bill for the past few months, yet it is still showing up online. I called AT&T to ask them about this and they told me that the $33.99 rate reflects my company discount which is $10.50. So I asked why it isn't 29.49 seeing as that would accurately reflect my $10.50 discount to which I was told "Because that would be too much of a discount." I asked the rep if he was telling me that $39.99 with my $10.50 corporate discount was accurately reflected as $33.99 and he replied "Yes, it is". I asked him "So are you telling me that $33.99 with a $10.50 discount equals $33.99?" to which he replied "Yes, that is your discount.".

I honestly didn't know what else to say, so I just said thanks and hung up.

I actually think that's worse than the Verizon Math incident.

Call back and get someone else. My discount is reflected properly. Your company discount is negociated at the corporate level...there are no other limits. The rep you spoke with was not empowered to change. Ask for a supervisor if you hear this BS from a second rep.

Are those of us who dont want to update past 3.0.1 going to be able to get MMS working a legit way? I dont want to update to 3.1, but lets say they have a carrier update on friday, is itunes going to say " you have to update to 3.1 first, then you can get the carrier update"

How will it work?

Pay attention using itunes on Friday. Cancel the 3.1 update but watch for a separate popup regarding the carrier file.

You can always following the instructions on several other threads and install a carrier file yourself. On Friday I suspect every phone with an updated carrier file (downloaded from itunes or not) will have MMS.

I'll say no for both things. I already have MMS working, along with Visual Voicemail and Tethering.

All thanks to the 5.1 .ipcc I got. I won't be doing away with the Tethering. So I'll just stay at 3.0.1

Yes! It finally works!!! Just sent an MMS, pretty awesome stuff ;D

Finally, I guess...?

Maybe it's just an amazing coincidence....

I tried my MMS maybe an hour ago....didn't work. I downloaded iTunes 9.0.1, sync'd the iphone up....tried afterwards...and I'm working now!

Again, I am in no way saying 9.0.1 got me working....just a fun coincidence.

*edit* Well, maybe they're just in the process. I can send, but it seems I can't receive.
I can send an MMS e-mail to myself, but if I try to reply, I still get my rejection e-mail that my MMS is restricted.

It's spreading! It's spreading!

Well, of course it's spreading. AT&T can't wait until Friday to delete the MMS opt out. They'll probably have all of them removed on Thursday if not sooner. Then again, it could be totall MR havoc on Friday. You might want to avoid this site that day (or might be fun for you to watch).

Love this advice.

FW 3.1

Carrier 5.1

MMS fully functional all day Tuesday in Miami/Dade Florida.

Service is quick. In the range of 5-7 seconds for most pics sent.

MMS sent to email is finally showing the originating phone's number@mms.att.net, and not a "regional" number like it was back in June on a previous beta FW.

Yep, I get that too when I send myself an e-mail via MMS
However if I reply to it, I still get the rejection e-mail that MMS is restricted

Those on 5.1 - are you going to switch out to the official release through itunes?

If you aren't - are you at all wondering if perhaps the official release will have tweaks and/or point to different servers/etc which will ensure MMS is working on their network vs having issues here and there because it's going through alternate servers?

p.s. Jessica. Tried to PM you back yesterday - your inbox is full.

I'm doing this, since all my info is on my computer and syncs to my phone, I'm probably going to set up my phone as a new phone, and install the 3.1 again and official carrier file.

p.s. I've read iPhone becomes a lot snappier when set up as a new phone, just a personal preference though.

My area: Mineola, NY
iPhone Model: 3GS
Capacity: 16GB
Software Version: 3.1
Jailbroken: No
AT&T .ipcc: 5.1

I can send and receive as of 9:00am Eastern time.

I got the text message yesterday and nothing. (I originally had MMS working with the carrier update file and the family plan for text) but when I switched I lost it.

So I got the text yesterday still couldn't today I tried and it works flawlessly. Two days early but still nice to have.

No, I love Tethering and MMS as is. Also, I'd like to stay at 3.0.1 thank you.
