Google mail is free because you see ads when accessing your email and you receive ads in your inbox.

MobileMe does none of that, your comparison is poor at best. SJ never said MobileMe subscription was a mistake, where do you get your info from, gizmodo?

They would be most likely to make the syncing services free. That sync your calendar, contacts, and email between computers and devices. That would be cool. This they kind of have to do since google services are all cloud based and sync automatically with android for free.

But I really doubt that they'd give everyone 20GB of cloud storage for free, and I don't know that Apple is trying to get into the free webmail game.

Find My iPhone is a tossup. On the one hand I don't know that it takes up a lot of resources like 20GB of cloud storage does, but on the other hand its the most nifty feature of MobileMe and I'm sure they'll figure that people will pay for it.

/I bought MobileMe with my iPhone as part of a deal I negotiated, but hardly ever use it. Yesterday was the first time I shared a file with it. I was talking with a friend about a band, then I went home to get ready to go out. I zipped the album into a single file and started the half hour 350MB upload process. While I was out in a bar I was able to open iDisk on my iPhone, enter the friend's email address, and send him a link to the download. Pretty sweet Apple, pretty sweet.

I also just Skyped an international call on my iPhone last night with a friend in Israel.

They can give 1GB as free accounts to everyone who buys the new iPhone/iPad. If you want more space, buy the upgrade..

As I said, give me free email at MobileMe and I am leaving google for good. Except for the maps.

Well 1GB would not be enough, but you make a good point that I hadn't thought about: allowing a free accounts on a limited basis relating to actually having bought Mac computers and iPhones.

If they limited it to those people, they could probably afford to give 5 to 10GB of storage free to each person, and add the online productivity tools that they are working on with iWork.com. Apple has probably found it hard to get MobileMe to catch on when there are many other options, sometimes better, often free, always cheaper, that do the same things (except find my iphone).

I'm just wondering if Apple will also offer a premium tier, and if people who have existing MobileMe subscriptions will be able to get all those features when they are available.

I don't think Apple is going to make it free, but just cheaper. And unlike most people here I do hope MobileMe stays a payed service.

Why?
Because there simply is no such thing as 'free'. It'll always come with a price. For example: with Google it's article 11 of their TOS ('what's yours is mine'), and showing personalised adds. Most people simply don't care (or know!) their data can be sold, published or in any other way used by Google, or mind seeing adds.

Well, I do care! In my opinion, MobileMe is an exclusive and premium service that just works great. When applying for a job I'd rather email with a MobileMe-address than with a silly hotmail/gmail-address, if you know what I mean.

And for Apple (and their SH/investors), what benefit does it have to make it free?
A ******** of new users that just cost money? Don't think so. ;)

Just because there would be a free option (with Ads) doesn't mean it would be the only option.

The benefit is that it would be another incentive to buy their expensive hardware. "Hey, if you buy this iMac along with an iPhone and iPad, all your bookmarks and calendars will be synced over the internet, free! Oh, and don't worry about loosing your expensive iPhone, you can find it with MobileMe too!" I don't think Apple makes very much money from MobileMe anyways.

Also, as somebody suggested here, if Apple were to make it free with new Macs only (say for three years) at the end they could have the option of upgrading their hardware, or extending Mobile Me for a modest fee. Edit: it was tuna, right above your post. :)

It should be free. Further lock people into this ecosystem. Besides, the future is in the cloud...

I don't understand while people think cloud computing is a good idea. To me, it's way too much like Big Brother coming true. I don't want ALL my data traveling over the Web. It's like big oil drilling. Sure, it may be safe for many years, but sooner or later it's going to cause a spill. Besides, hard drive space is so ridiculously cheap and even mobile processors are getting so powerful there is simply NO NEED for it. So I wonder why companies are SO keen to get everyone on the planet into this cloud computing thing whereby nearly all their data and personal information are stored on a company servers, not their own local hard drives. I may be paranoid, but it just sounds bad bad bad to me when I think about it.

I'd probably move for it to be something you get when you buy a Mac, part of iLife or something.

I don't see any difference between a GMail address and a MobileMe address personally in terms of credibility. Also, with a GMail account you don't have to use the default address. You can use an email address at your own domain name instead, so no-one even knows you are using GMail. With MobileMe you can't.
