I have a LG 32UN880-B currently as a secondary display with my 27" iMac 5K and also another LG 32UN880-B on the way. Those two are going to be my pair of displays with the Mac Studio. No need more than 60Hz as I don't game in my Macs. Only Pro Tools/Logic Pro X and some Adobe Photoshop is what I do. Color accuracy on the LG Ultrafine 32UN880-B is GREAT plus the Ergo Stand is awesome.
How does the quality of the screen on the LG compare to the iMac 5K when you have them side by side. I am not into gaming at all either, but I do need crisp text as I do a lot of writing of curriculum. My photograpy is a hobby, but I do like to hear about the color accuracy. I do like the looks of the Ergo stand.

Text is sharp, maybe a little bit less than the 5K Retina display but most definitely not noticeable from seating distance. But what impress me the most about the LG is color accuracy. Colors are natural and balanced. Color uniformity is GREAT. My 5K Retina display has red tinting on one side of the screen and blue on the other side since day one. The 32UN880-B does not.

Do you run this at 4K for text or change resolution?

There's quite a few, reasonably priced options for 4K screens at 27".

I've got an LG 34" Ultrawide which works great with my M1 MBP, but my M1 Mini can't drive it at the higher resolutions. You also need to check the resolution of the ultra wide if that's the way you go as a lot of them aren't 5K so you don't get a "retina like" resolution.

I'm in two minds about the ultrawide - I really like it but like @russell_314 says, I have a similar issue depending what sort of work I'm doing where I'll have two windows side by side but think I'd be more focused with dual monitors. It's a strange thing to try and describe.
Same boat. I have a 27" Dell 4K and the same thing but in 24" as well, situated side by side. I have the 27" "main" monitor directly parallel to the desk, with the 24" "crooked", off to the side. I keep my "info" stuff on the smaller monitor (browser with emails, notes, collateral, etc) and the 27" is for the actual "work". I love the setup, and I would be really thrown off it it was all on one bigger screen. I'm sure I COULD get used to it, but boy am I bad with change!

OP: I imagine any decent 4K 27" would serve you well. Spend a little more for a thunderbolt monitor if you want to keep cable clutter to a minimum.

I'm giving the Alienware 34" curved QD-OLED gaming monitor a try. 3440 x 1400, not what you'd call retina, but... QD-OLED.

Let us know how it looks with text, because that one would likely also be my future pick.. I am quite sad that we can't get 5k2k ultrawides with proper specifications yet. :(

Do Universal Control and Sidecar work with a non Apple monitor? Seems like it should but this is Apple after all.

There‘s a good chance my display arrives days or week after the Mac Studio so I may have to resort to trying to use this via the hdmi connection (because I know I won’t be able to stop myself from powering the Mac up)

I'm considering the Dell U2723QE, does anyone have any experience with the monitor? I know it a very new monitor.

I found it to be well suited to MBPs due to the variety and number of ports, it even has an ethernet. But the panel itself and color gamut coverage isn't the best out there, even among consumer display it is below average. For the Mac Studio the computer itself has enough I/O ports already so I think this Dell isn't exactly a great match, unless you also plan to plug MBPs to the same desk interchangeably.

What Delta E are you getting on that LG?

I do like the variety of ports; then I could plug everything into the monitor. But you are correct, the Studio itself has enough I/O ports. The color gamut would be important because I use Photoshop and Lightroom. Which monitors could I consider that have a better color gamut? The color gamut on the U2723QE is as follows:
Color Gamut - 100% Rec 709, 100% sRGB, 98% DCI-P3
Unless I'm either missing something or looking at this the wrong way (which is possible), I think these numbers are pretty good.

any recommendation for a monitor stand that can fit the Studio below? With a clearance height of 9.5cm for the Studio, seems like it might not make sense to have the monitor place above the Studio - monitor position will be way too high for comfort?

I guess if the Studio is not going on the desk, then having ports in the display will be helpful like you say.

Then for color critical work it depends which medium is the most important to you. For print (pre-press or photography) I would say Adobe RGB 100% is the target to aim. If a photography workflow intends mostly for web / multimedia consumption than print delivery, then *maybe* this Dell is rated more or less right.

Personally I see Dell’s UP line more suited for photography. Even an older and cheaper model like the UP2716D has proper ARGB coverage and has out of factory uniformity compensation.

Then there is the ability to hardware calibrate and even feed a LUT to the display that would be needed for critical works, but of course your mileage varies if that’s necessary. Overall Dells even the mid to lower models have pretty good out of factory calibration so it cannot be that wrong.

With a 4k monitor - what's the best way to connect with the studio... Displayport, HDMI, Thunderbolt or USBC?

A few 4K options that offer a uniform bezel similar to the Studio Display.

Dell U3223QE/U2723QE (USB C/60Hz)
Benq PD3220U (USB C/60Hz)
LG 27GP950 (DP1.4/HDMI 2.1/144Hz)

I am not expert and was told that it doesnt affect the quality - for me, I have my 4k connected using HDMI.

You should avoid HDMI for color critical workflows, because it doesn't show the whole range of RGB colors (blacks and whites).

However in a new video he says that newer Macs send full range color gamut even through HDMI so it shouldn't be a problem:

If your monitor have USB ports and USB C input, then go with USB C as that way you would be able to use the display USB A ports. Those are very convenient if you want to plug a webcam.

HDMI *could* output the same image as DP (over type-C or not) when done right. The problem is with recent macOS it is not always the case, at least not “out of the box” easy. I myself would deem a direct type-C to DP cable to be the least problematic way to connect, as far as recent Macs are concerned, especially on MacBooks without built-in HDMI.
