Silentwave said:Yes the TESTING versions are out- probably by this point production-level versions- but it doesn't matter, because these are still just testing chips, not full scale production and release. Until Intel releases it and you have your supply line you can't have the system.
What's the point of releasing test models if you change the chips? It seems more realistic to me that Intel have their finalised Meroms at the moment, and completed work on Merom before Conroe or Woodcrest. The only reason they chose to release these chips in this order is to make more money.
They can't release all three at once because they need time to manufacture thousands of chips before they release them, hence the month gap.
Releasing Merom in June would have been a bad idea, as Yonah is still new, and their Xeon and Pentium lines are in dire straits (a damn good band that).
Therefore they sit on their designs for Merom, and release Woodcrest first, to win back the "Mass SMP" (to differentiate between multi proc. + core and only dual core SMP) server market. Then Conroe because Pentium is so old. (Damn I hate the name Pentium. I'm fine with Intel transition, but I am NOT buying a Pentium Mac!)
My sources for this? Many months of lurking at this site. So Mac Rumors itself.
Sorry if this "forceful conversation" between Silentwave and myself is off topic.
