Because I am impatient, I decided to jump on my iMac and test my theory....

I have a Netgear router that has an option to create a Guest Network. So I created the Guest Network, Broadcasted the SSID and used WEP for security and it is working flawlessly.

I've made my iMac go to sleep. I've completely shut it down and restarted and the connection is rock solid in all instances. Also, this is without me messing with IPV6 like I did previously. IPV6 is set to Automatically, as it defaults.

I believe this proves my theory that ML (and most likely Lion) is getting itself confused with the past OS and new OS network configuration parameters. Basically, when it awakes, it looks for some file somewhere to re-instate it's configuration, most likely finding redundant files and getting confused.

The trick now will be finding where those parameters exist in ML and the Lion and resetting them to a "fresh" ML install. I think I already know where to look so stay tuned, I'll be back!

I feel everyone's pain! This exact wireless issue started plaguing me way back when I first installed Snow Leopard! Apple's support for various routers tends to be quite flaky, especially after new OS releases.

Luckily it hasn't happened to me yet since updating to mountain lion, but I have already had a complete system crash… so I'm not sure if I'm faring that much better!

I believe I've proven my theory correct and have fixed it.

For starters, I've read many posts on the internet about resetting pram, deleting your network location, re-establishing you network etc. but after trying them, never once was I prompted to enter the password for my network. This tells me that my network password and configuration was stored somewhere.

That somewhere was keychain. Go to your Spotlight (magnifying glass in the upper right hand corner) and type keychain and you will see "Keychain Access". Click on it to enter Keychain Access.

In Keychain Access I noticed duplicate entries of my network in both system and login. Click on Login, then sort by Kind and you will see "Airport network password" for every network you belong to. Now delete the one you are having issues with as well if there are duplicate entries. If there are, this is most likely your problem. Now click on System and delete the one you are having issues with as well if there are duplicates. Once again, if there are, this is most likely your problem.

Close Keychain Access and click your WiFi Icon in the upper right hand corner and then click on the network you want to connect to. It should prompt you for a password, fill it in and then click on remember. Viola! Fixed!

I've made it sleep, I've shut down completely and now it just works.....like I am used to.

Let me know how you make out. Just because this fixed it for me does not mean it will work for everyone as our problems could be very different.

Don't know if this is related but I have a slight variation of the problem. If I have something downloading in the background and if my 2007 iMac goes to sleep the internet connection goes to sleep as well. Which means the download is interrupted. When I wake Mountain Lion then I am reconnected automatically to the internet after a brief interval. Never used to happen in Lion. Annoying like hell!

Try rebooting your rooter & updating to the latest firmware if there is one. Mine stays connected with my Netgear 900

I shouldn't have to - It worked before ML - So the faults not my router.

I have the same problem btw.

Haven't experienced any wifi issues with ML + 2012 MBP 13" while connected to my Airport Extreme. But, if I connect to my gf's work network on a Netgear n300 in the same house, I do get disconnected inconsistently.

I'm sure something like this will get patched eventually. Better an OS problem than a hardware problem.

Thank you Troutspinner!

Thank you so much, troutspinner! I followed your instructions exactly and cleared the network passwords out of my keychain. It worked! Safari and Chrome are both working fine, and loading pages faster than ever.

Nothing works for me

On my Mac Pro early 2008, wireless is still highly unreliable : sometimes a stop/start of the wifi connection fixes it, but sometimes the connection goes in limbo and only a reboot can bring it back.

I cleaned up the keychain, it seemed to worked for a while, but started again.

I reset the PRAM. Same thing.

I pinged http://www.google.com continuously. Same thing.

I have a Airport base station with latest firmware.

Eagerly awaiting 10.8.1 !

PS : my connection had died as I hit Submit Reply !

NIce post, but unfortunately this didn't work for me. I don't have any duplicates in my Key Chain.

Ping

It is just a quick fix, but it worked for me: open a terminal, type ping google.com (or other site, it does not matter) and keep running. This keeps the connection alive.

Fixed my issues with ML wi-fi: changed broadcast channel

Hi all,

After two days of Mountain Lion killing my productivity by dropping the wi-fi connection every minute or so, I found a solution that works in my environment. [2011 Mac Mini, Netgear Dual Band N300 Router]

Just for reference, like some others, I had no issues with wi-fi under Lion. After installing ML, my connection became unusable. I did try the 'constantly ping google solution', which sort of worked. It kept my connection much longer, but using the internet was still erratic and slow. I also tried troutspinner's 'Delete the passwords from Keychain solution', but unfortunately, no luck for me there.

What did bring my connection back to normal was this:

In my router's configuration page, I changed the wireless network channel from 'auto' to 7.

That's it. After saving the settings, things have been solid as a rock. Don't know the why or how of it all, but for me, it worked perfectly.

Frustrating to have an issue like this slip through the cracks in ML, but I'm just glad to be back up and running. Hopefully this might work for others, too.

Thanks for pointing this out.
I've made exact same observation about the password kept. For it was starting with Lion.
This was driving me crazy for half a year or so and Apple support involved.

With a new router (that I had to swap anyway for other reason) this was fixed.
This is why people think their router is old or became buggy. But it 's fixed only because one creates a new, fresh entry in the keychain for it.
The old router was working fine in the same time with multiple devices, while the Lion'ed iMac had issues. That's why I turned down this theory of router malfunction.
Apple support was even suggesting a defective Wireless card inside the Mac. But at the same time a tethering connection over iPhone worked flawless then. And now with new router also.

At the end it's as simple as a out-of-sync for those duplicate entry in the keychain for the WLAN password.
Thanks for pointing that out!

Apple should fix this.

Pinging google.com worked out for me.

But I'll not install ML on my MBA because I'm afraid if this solution fails there. On my iMac I can rely on a LAN cable...

Wireless just drops....

I had this persistent issue when I upgraded to Lion, and I was never able to get it to fully go away. Now it is worse in Mountain Lion! 2010 iMac.

My wireless connection will hold just fine while I am using the computer, but if I go away then come back later, the connection is always dropped. I was hoping that upgrading to Mountain Lion would finally solve this. Nope!!!!

This is a probleme i had ever since Lion, and after installing ML its even worse.
In lion i got it fixed by installing some other older wifi drivers, but i cant find those no more. Anyone know anything about that fix? And why havnt Apple fixed this yet after all this time, when there are so many with the same probleme..!?

Lol, Steve Jobs isn't spinning in the slightest. This Wi-Fi problem has been around since at least Snow Leopard, and much worse problems plagued earlier versions of OS X (specifically, 10.0-10.2).

Now on topic: When I first upgraded to ML, I was getting full bars and an IP address but no connectivity unless I ran the Network Diagnostics (System Preferences > Network > Assist Me > Diagnostics), after which it would work fine for a while. I later decided to do a clean install, which helped tremendously, but once or twice a day my network will drop (while still maintaining full bars). Running the Diagnostics once again fixes it. Give it a shot. I'm just gonna attribute it to a dot-zero bug. It should get worked out in time (hopefully in 10.8.1).

Hi everyone, I'm new here I thought I was the only person with Mountain Lion and Wifi issue.

I've been looking around to see if anyone's having the same exact wifi problem as I've been having for the past 2 days.

I have a Late 2011 MacBook Pro 15" bought in June 2012
Upgraded Mountain Lion On Wed July 25th
Started having Wifi issue since July 30th
Mac can't connect to wifi after waking up or turning on
My other mobile devices are connected and functioning properly (Android Phone, Window based Laptop)
The only thing I can get connected is to power off my router and turn it back on
Here's the weird thing, when my MacBook Pro can't connect to wifi after waking up or turning on, if I turn off wifi on my other devices and turn them back on they too cannot reconnect. (I do this to rule out a defective router) I would need to power off/on my router for everything to reconnect. It seems like once the MacBook is having problem with connecting to a wifi connection it affects all the devices that are trying to connect to the same connection. If the devices have already been connected prior they are connected.

Thanks
