Right on. All other devices on my network are fine. Im mostly using iphone for net now. Two machines i got here, older mbp and brand new retina machine, both machines internet is unstable since upgrade to mountain lion and it's not my fault or my network...

Its apples os thats screwin. A

... For sure the amount of similar feedback from people with the same problem i see on google suggests there is a very real problem here.

Just opened an account here to input on this... Its driving me sideways. Tried fixes suggested.. Nothing works.. Problem is deeeeeper.

I gotta ask ... some have said this WiFi problem has been going on for years - ..... is it only when you upgrade?

I only got my MBP in November (Late 2011) so I've never updated a Mac OS before ... I'm debating whether to upgrade to ML now or wait until an update.... I want the new features on offer with ML so I'm pretty keen to get it downloaded but after seeing the issues with WiFi talked about online and a few other problems - I'm a bit worried!

I believe I've proven my theory correct and have fixed it.

For starters, I've read many posts on the internet about resetting pram, deleting your network location, re-establishing you network etc. but after trying them, never once was I prompted to enter the password for my network. This tells me that my network password and configuration was stored somewhere.

That somewhere was keychain. Go to your Spotlight (magnifying glass in the upper right hand corner) and type keychain and you will see "Keychain Access". Click on it to enter Keychain Access.

In Keychain Access I noticed duplicate entries of my network in both system and login. Click on Login, then sort by Kind and you will see "Airport network password" for every network you belong to. Now delete the one you are having issues with as well if there are duplicate entries. If there are, this is most likely your problem. Now click on System and delete the one you are having issues with as well if there are duplicates. Once again, if there are, this is most likely your problem.

Close Keychain Access and click your WiFi Icon in the upper right hand corner and then click on the network you want to connect to. It should prompt you for a password, fill it in and then click on remember. Viola! Fixed!

I've made it sleep, I've shut down completely and now it just works.....like I am used to.

Let me know how you make out. Just because this fixed it for me does not mean it will work for everyone as our problems could be very different.

That helped my friend with his iMac. He says thanks!

Edit: spoke too soon. Soon after posting this, his connection dropped.

1. Turn Wi-Fi off;

2. Delete SystemConfiguration located in /Library/Preferences;

3. Reboot;

4. Turn Wi-Fi on;

5. Enjoy, until you have to do it again in about a week... this is only a temporary fix, until Apple acknowledges this and issues a permanent fix.

WiFi Problem Solution

Try setting MTU to 1300 in Network.

Network -> Advanced -> Hardware -> Congifure: Manually, MTU Custom, 1300

That solved my WiFi problems

Let me know if it helps you.

Regards.

i've been having a similar problem where my wireless works fine, until the screen saver activates or the screen turns off automatically. if i log back in after the screen saver has been active for a few minutes my connection is dead. wireless is still connected, but no traffic (tcp or otherwise) is sent over the interface for a few minutes.

if i reload a page, and after 1-2 minutes has passed, everything comes back. i tried a few things (reset PRAM, SMC, deleting that SystemConfig dir, creating new network location, etc.. practically everything in this thread) and none of it seemed to work. i called up apple to tell them of the issue, they suggested a complete reinstall of mountain lion, and without doing a thing it seemed to start working fine.

been 2 days now, i guess i'll give it a week and see what happens.

btw, my macbook air only has issues with non-apple branded wireless access points if that helps

Have the same issue. Left some video conversion and downloading on over the night, just to discover that my MacBook apparently had went to sleep and killed everything. Never happened with Lion. I also experience very frequent wifi dropouts now. This sucks hard time.

Anyone ever try'd reverting the WiFi drivers back to the SL version, WiFi problems arrived by the most after upgrading from SL (or later), so it seems plausible...

The only solution I found that actually worked was to replace the Mountain Lion Wi-Fi drivers with the ones included in Snow Leopard.

NOTE: This solution is not for the faint of heart and please ensure you've backed up your system - at worst this should only bork your Wi-Fi (which I'm assuming is already broken if you're trying these steps) but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Insert the Snow Leopard DVD into your DVD drive.

Open a Terminal:
sudo -s
cd /System/Library/Extensions
mv IO80211Family.kext /Users/<your acct>/Desktop
cp -R /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD/System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext .

Run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permission on your system drive

Rebuild the kext cache:
sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions

Wait a few minutes to ensure that the cache has been regenerated and then reboot

This is my issue actually - mine's nothing as serious as some on here, but when I lock my laptop, or it goes into suspend, and I come back to it, it automatically re-connects again. Might sound fine, but why disconnect in the first place? My sametime of course disconnects itself from the LAN, and thus shows me as being offline - which means my colleagues cannot ping me or anything - downloads disconnect themselves, etc - really frustrating...

This has only happened since ML upgrade - and I don't know why, but I'm starting to think this is some 'green' feature or something...

And, I've got no inclination whatsoever to start regressing drivers - especially without a documented/suggested back-out plan - I certainly don't want to make it worse than it is...

Anyone know if this is some purposeful 'hibernate' feature or similar?

I tried the ping continuously which worked- sort of. Someplace on the internet I picked up this- and it seems to be working. Go to Apple System Preferences, Network, Advanced, Hardware. Change MTU from Automatic to Custom and set it at 1453. The explaination was something about the size of packets being sent and I can't say I understand it but it seems to work.

I have had my internet timing and all equipment changed, brought it into the geniuses, and nothing else has worked. So far for the past 3 hours I have not been dropped a single time.

A couple years ago I just gave up fighting with all the wifi problems and bought an Airport Express. All my wifi problems disappeared. I would have preferred to find a software solution, but at some point I just decided it wasn't worth the hassle and bought the Airport Express. I really like it though, I'm glad I got it.

I'm having the same problem on my iMac, which is actually hardwired to my router & not utilizing wifi. When the iMac sleeps, the internet connection drops. Takes 10-15 seconds to pick back up when I wake.

This was never an issue in SL or Lion.

Oddly, I don't seem to have this problem on my MBA, which is connected via wifi.

Anybody who is with the Mac longer than 3 years know that ever since at LEAST Tiger there has been problems with Airport dropping wifi connections.

same boat... ugh. never happened in Lion or SL...
anyway my story is it worked. My internet worked. I tried it at the university and at home, then i put my computer to sleep for a few days and when i opened it up today the damn internet refused to work. I tried it on my phones, iPad, everything seems to be working. My sister's MBP (with Lion) connects fine too...

EDIT::i think 10.8.1 fixes the wifi issues, but we have to wait till then...

Not for very long!

Don't know if this is related but I have a slight variation of the problem. If I have something downloading in the background and if my 2007 iMac goes to sleep the internet connection goes to sleep as well. Which means the download is interrupted. When I wake Mountain Lion then I am reconnected automatically to the internet after a brief interval. Never used to happen in Lion. Annoying like hell!

I have a similar problem. My 2009 iMac's internet connection goes to sleep when the computer goes to sleep whenever I am streaming video from programs like airvideo. It never used to do that until I updated to ML.

I have 10.8.1; if you are expecting that to be the solution, it isn't. The true fix, at least for me, was to change the channel of my router from 6 to 11.

It worked for like a week. But now it's as worse as before... I'll go back to 10.7 if Apple won't fix this.

None of the fixes discussed here worked permanently.

Just to add my tale of woe...

Upgraded 3 imacs from Lion to ML with no ill effects at all. Eventually got around to upgrading a mac mini and that is now effectively dead in the water over wireless. On ethernet it flies, but wireless is a waste of effort. The various solutions mentioned have not worked, though some have shown a glimmer of hope for a minute or two.

I'm considering connecting the ethernet port to a wireless bridge device as the least cost / hassle option available. I don't want to start router changes as the 3 imacs (and a host of other devices) are running perfectly.
