Hi!

I started to get some wierd cursor issues today with M1 Pro and BS 11.1.

Sometimes randomly when I start / restart the mac visual mouse cursor dissapears / freezes on startup / login screen (I use trackpad only). Mouse function does not freeze actually, and I can log in and click or move around the screen (I just do not see the actual cursor which stays frozen in some location)...

BS 11.1 update was installed when it was realeased, however I started to notice this issue only today.

Anyone experiencimg something similar?

I really hope it’s not some hardware issue. However, it does not seem likely. Seems like software to me.

This happened with a VAVA usb dock attached with a crappy gas station lightening cable connecting my phone.

The cursor image was frozen, yet if i moved around the trackpad, it was in a "ghost" mode. If i scrolled over my dock, it would highlight as if it was functioning normally, except I couldn't see it.

Then as I clicked around a bit, screen went black, but the touch bar stayed active. I did a hard boot, and removed the dock, and everything went back to normal.

I currently have the same setup connected with no issues at the moment.

Exactly the same problem has been happening to my M1 Pro 16gb 256gb.
The Problem started happening after updating to 11.1 as well, and never had it happen before updating.

So far, the only action you can take to "fix" the issue, seems to be completely restarting your system.

I have nothing connected to the laptop at all, so it seems (to me), as if the problem is not originating from having any accessories connected to the system.

Something rather interesting about the bug though, is that I have been able to reproduce it somewhat consistently, about 75% of the time when booting up:

When you're booting up the system from a complete shutdown, don't touch anything until the login-screen.
Then enter your password, using only the keyboard, don't touch the touchpad, and press enter to login.
When the screen then shows the desktop after logging in, immediately start moving the mouse, and then it'll freeze up.

This often happens to me when alt-tabing between full screen games and other applications. I can make the cursor appear again by moving my (invisible) cursors to the top of the screen and clicking the menu bar

Has happened only once during the last few weeks here. But still - it is there and I have no idea what causes it so far.

Same here. It happens a lot for me unless I don't touch the cursor for some time. Thing is, I JUST set up my M1 Mac after completely formatting. I have only two Programs installed, which are OneDrive and Dashlane for Safari. The rest is stock. 11.1 as well.

Let's hope they fix this crap.

I have this issue on my work Macbook Pro Mid 2020 with BS 11.1 and 2 external screens connected. On my private MBP M1 I have never had this happening. Looks like a BS 11.1 issue.

Same issue started for me on my m1 mini. The cursor is still there but not shown. For me, the cursor comes back if I can get it to click on the left side of the "about this Mac" apple logo. I just need to blindly click to see what reacts and gauge where the cursor is.

I have exactly the same issue, cursor freezing, yet I am capable to move it behind the scene without seeing it. Appeared suddenly when ugrading to Big Sur 1.1 on a macbook pro 13'' M1 2020.

Seems there are quite a lot of M1s affected with this bug.

This has happened with my Pro a couple of times, at least. Much like in your case I saw it happen after I upgraded to BS 11.1. The problem didn't resolve by restarting. I had to shut down my Pro and turn on again for it to resolve. It has been some time now since the issue occurred. I would say put it behind you & move on. It should be a rare/seldom occurrence & 11.1 is the likely culprit.

Hi!

Same thing happened to me today. Is the third day since I have this new MacBook Pro M1 and now the issue appears and still persists. Only thing that resolves the issue is to restart it.

The issue occurs only at the login screen.

Same issue here. We have an M1 MBA running Big Sur 11.1. Cursor often freezes when playing full screen games like Adopt Me on Roblox. The issue can be resolved by alt-tabbing to a non-game application and moving the cursor which frees it up and then alt-tabbing back to the game. This works but the cursor will generally freeze again at some point before too long.
Restarting also works but alt-tabbing is easier but both are only a temporary solution.

If this continues on 11.2 then it should be reported to Apple.

This occasionally happened to me since many many years on Power Macs, Intel Macs, and now on ARM Macs.
So it's not a new issue, but yeah report it, good luck through... :D

I’ve been hitting this more frequently on BigSur on a 16” Intel MBP as well. It seems like a bug in BigSur to me.

Hey guys I’m from Italy, I have the same problem here
Even I noticed this freezing cursor after 11.1 update, like as if it wasn’t there and it only fixes up by restarting the mac.
I thought It was an hardware problem, well, it still can be but given your experiences I’m starting to consider there’s a software nuisance here.

Hi Guys,

I found this page because I had the same issue. Every time I logged out / restarted, when I tried to move the mouse at login my mouse curser got stuck but I could still use the mouse in 'ghost mode'.

I found what I think might be a fix (it stopped happening for me...)

I noticed that moving the mouse quickly makes it bigger (accessibility function), so I switched that feature off and now the issue has gone away.

It's System Preferences > Accessibility > Display > Shake mouse pointer to locate.

Worth a try for anyone with this issue.

For me this looks like a graphics bug in BS. (I was terrified my HW was fried, only got the machine yesterday!)

Please for all of you, report it to Apple as a bug.. The only fix will come from Apple.
