Not sure if this was always the case, but I just realized my iPad Pro’s aluminum body is warped twice, the two curvy creases almost looks like a bulgy box.

It’s hard to see in photos, but videos seem to show it when light is directed at it. I can slightly feel the two bulges. I’m unsure if it’s bent twice, warped, or something inside is bulging out. I’m unsure if it was the result from drawing.

I’m passed my 15 day return period, now that this Wednesday has passed. Will Apple let me exchange it?

Images below (one of them I edited for dramatic effect since it’s not showing well on photos)
Is that a 12.9” iPad ?
It’s just I am not metallurgy expert but IMHO the aluminum skin is too thin a gauge.

No, you are not just unlucky. This is my third 12.9 inch iPad Pro. The two prior to this one had backlight leaks. This one has a similar problem on the back as yours does — it has a small dent below the Apple logo. I’m tired of the iPad lottery — hoping each one that I take home will be a nice quality build. This one is going back and I’ll take a refund.

Now it looks like a feature present in all IPPs :D. Idk, but it seems not very logical to make an ultra thin and light device which can't be safely used without cover. What is the point then? (Customization with covers?) And this protruding camera that won't let IPP lay on a flay surface - again, a cover needed to make it one level with the rest of the bottom. I'd prefer IPP to be heavier but less fragile.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Apple should do more testing with products, there is no reason why consumers need to keep finding these issues. Sounds like a real concern with this new iPad. Does it affect both 11&12”?

No issues with my 11" and I've had it since release day (I just checked it).
It might just be the 12.9"/LTE's, this thread is the only thread on here I've come across regarding warping.

I'm surprised that people on the bleeding-edge haven't learned that this goes, with the territory. Want a flawless device out of the box? Wait 3-4 months. I've done that for every iPad (except the 1st gen which I bought on day 1 of pre-orders) and have always received a beautiful device.

Yep, it’s the 12.9”!

Look at my attached image of my iPad Pro, its backlighting is horrendous! Unlike any of my previous iPad Pros before it!

Absolutely. I just think they need a stronger metal or frame. Personally, if they managed to make a strong and thin iPad, that’d be amazing. Because the Smart Keyboard folio adds back much more thickness.

I just received two 12.9" space gray iPad Pros from Amazon today. Both were warped right out of the box just like the ones in your pictures. I will be returning them.

They are not all like this though. I have two 12.9" iPad Pros that I purchased from Costco last week (a silver for myself and a space gray for my husband). Both of the Costco units are perfectly flat and they are beautiful. I ended up not liking the silver color which is why I ordered some more space grays from Amazon.

I think this is a sign for me to just keep my silver unit. I'm starting to like it now since it is not warped. LOL.

That’s great to hear. It’s awesome that you can always fall back to your other iPad if your replacement ends up being defected.

There appears to be some people on Reddit who are experiencing something similar to mine.

Actually in fact, there’s one person who returned his warped iPad and received the very same thing today, a warped iPad out of the box.

Honestly, I believe that there are many iPads out there that have these defects, but you need to be looking for it to notice it. Some are worse than others. But it’s only seen under a specific angle and specific perspective, and especially under a specific lighting condition that you can only see these warpings. You won’t notice unless you had something like my first iPad Pro where the bump can be felt.

I got a 12.9 LTE Model. Flawless. Now I believe it 100%, knowing how poor apple’s QC has been lately.

Not me, but this person had his warped iPad Pro exchanged today and received the exact same thing. Looks to be a space grey model.

I hope they have "9000 series aluminium the finest recycled environmentally sensitive aluminium alloy ever offered by Apple in an iPad Pro" ready for the next iPad pro.

Yup. Starting to look like a half baked alloy to me. Metallurgy used to be a strength at Apple. Cutting corners to chase the Recycled Millennials. ;)

I got to check a demo model at the Apple Store and it’s hard to see it in a brightly lit store, but you can somewhat see the warpings on the space grey model.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I upped the contrast in these photos, they’re hard to see with pics.

My 11" iPad pro 512gb WiFi space grey also has this warping issue. Will order a new iPad in the next few days

That looks really bad! Try asking for a replacement maybe.

The penny-pinching millionaire Tim Cook decided to save 3 pennies per unit by encasing the internals of this year's iPad pros with aluminum foil. This crap Apple is pulling now is worse than the John Sculley days as CEO, and the negative consequences are catching up to Apple fast.

People should be posting their serial numbers, especially if they are models being sent back or exchanged. That way we can perhaps isolate a bad batch or shipment.

I can't wait to see all these returns on the refurb store and this same thing to pop back up again in 6 months.
