Was just going to update. I got it to work, and it is the Rock version. I can't even download the NoRock version.

But i did get it working and i can now tether my iPad.

So i need to purchase the Rock one before i can use the NoRock? I didn't even see how to do that. I have no clue about all this JB'ing stuff so this is all completely new to me. I just want tethering and that's all i'm interested in.

The only reason i'm interested in the NoRock version is because i've seen several posts saying it makes your iPhone experience much smoother.

There is no purchasing of Rock. Rock is similar to Cydia but less reliable. For me to install MyWi I had to download Rock, create an account and then I could install MyWi trial to see if it works correctly.

So Cydia is better than Rock ?

This is all new to me so please excuse my ignorance.

iPad in hand its time to JB and tether and i'm looking for a little clarity.

Thanks

No, it's not. I've been running both Rock and Cydia for over a year. No issues at all.

1. JB iPhone.
2. Install MyWi on iPhone.
3. Start MyWi on iPhone which, essentially, turns your iPhone into a wireless access point.
4. Connect your iPad to the MyWi access point.
5. Your iPad now has access to the Internet.

MyWi has other options, e.g., USB and bluetooth tethering, as well as adding security to the connection, but it's best to get the basics working first.

There's no need to JB the iPad to do this.

If you need help JBing your iPhone, visit the iPhone Hacks forum on this site or visit the Rock Your Phone web site.

It's a good solution but the battery life on the iPhone is quickly diminished. I for one figure if I need connectivity that frequently I could buy the 3G model. On the surface it seems excessive for me and once more forces me to rely o. AT&T and a second data plan.

I feel ya here, I wish my iPhone had email support... I really do!

/facepalm
I fear I may blow your mind here, but if I have my iPad out and want to check an email on it, I shouldn't have to dig through my bookbag for my iPhone just to check an email.

Exactly what are you doing on the Internet that's so intense that it depletes your battery so fast?
A bit of YouTube and MacRumors is really all. I've gotten like 3 hours maximum, a third of the iPad 3G (and some people here have gotten more than 9 hours on 3G anyway with the iPad).

And even then my iPhone is useless after that.

This is obviously subjective but Rock has made many more phones unusable needing a restore compared to Cydia. Look at the iPhone hack section.

I gotta admit I do wish I waited for the 3G for gps and the ability to put my sim in it for texting and seamless Internet. But mywi really is great. I never feel the need to use my iPad when I'm. Away from an outlet. I have my phone for that. But everyplace else I just leave my phone plugged in when on mywi. Phone stays nice and cool and fully charged well providing Internet to the iPad. So I can't complain.

I don't know what all the fuss is about battery life using mywi, like you I just plug in my phone if I have power and if not I carry a backup battery anyway and that charges me back up. I have yet to run it down far enough to where it matters. The only time I really use mywi is when I'm getting a meal or taking a ride in the car. If I'm in the car I keep my phone in the charger.

It's a fantastic app, and the developers did the best they could, but it's really not the best service.

Plainly put, you're looking at a bit over 2 hours of usage until the battery is just about dry. This makes it a no go for me.

The iPad 3G can get up to 9 hours, and it doesn't ruin my phone in the process. (Not only did it destroy my battery, but I was obviously unable to call anyone or text for the rest of the day. :()

That and every time I want to check a single email I have to boot up MyWi and initiate tethering. Too much work in my eyes.

Again, great app, but not for me. $30/mo is fine for me, and unless you're only using it once in awhile, I wouldn't recommend MyWi.

but if you use it for a laptop then you can charge your iphone while doing it and keep miwi on

Don't get me wrong, I love MyWi. I use it all the time with my 3G iPad. But with intensive use the battery discharges faster than it can be recharged. I found this out the hard way. I was working in my car with my MBP for about 45 minutes. iPhone was charging. Finished up and unplugged iPhone. Less than a 50% charge remained. It had been fully charged when I started.

MyWi is a great option but it sucks juice faster than a crack ho'.

Well, it's not too late to go 3G. I sold my WiFi for what I paid for it and bought a 3G. I could easily of sold it for more if I had the patience to wait more than a day.

Yeah i was thinking about it but all the apple stores are sold out and i'd have to wait to sell my wifi as I don't have the extra funds right now to just buy a 3G outright so Id have to be without my iPad for a few days and I don't know if I could handle it! Lol

Got mywi working without Rock. Really pretty painless for a complete JB novice such as myself. Took some additional steps but overall not bad.

Everyone on the forums just throws out "just JB your phone and throw the app on" like that's some sort of easy task to a complete novice. And the hack forum isn't much help either, lot of stuff to sift through and I don't have a clue what a pwn or snow whatever or blackrain is lol. Someone really should do a step by step guide of wywi specifically tailored to the novice and tack it in this forum because I'm sure that is a big question for the casual user like myself. There are some really helpful videos on YouTube that got me through it, but again a lot of stuff to sift through.

And I definitely agree this wouldn't be a replacement for a 3G iPad given the short battery of the iPhone. I just wanted it for that rare time I travel and would opt for a few hours of net on the iPad as opposed to paying for a hotspot or surfing on the iPhone itself.

This has been my experience as well, and that's with just light browsing, no video/audio. I turned in my wifi and am waiting for my reservation email for my 3g unit. MyWi + iPad is a great combo for those emergencies or those times you just need a little bit of light browsing, but for any heavy browsing for a long time, or any video/audio stream it is tougher, especially if you are weird like me and need your phone to have juice for business calls.

If all the other guides are so useless, why didn't you do a step by step guide?:rolleyes:

Is the roll eyes icon really needed? You could have made your point without the sarcasm.

Any tethering from iPhone drains the battery INSANELY fast, no matter what you're doing. You're not going to get the 9 hours you get with 3G on iPad. Now, granted you to have pay through the nose for that perk, but it's still worth it to some people.

Well I connected this morning for about 30 minutes and saw no drain at all. I think it all has to do with how much you will be using it. For occasional use, when WiFi isn't available, I think it is great.

I didn't have such a great report, I do have a 3G that has been used for 2 years now. My battery may not be as strong as yours but I do find that the usage of MyWi is good if there is just that time when I feel I need connection and my phone won't suffice. I travel from RDU tomorrow and if I recall I can either pay for Wifi in the airport or tether, you know in the event the airline is not on time. ;)

Maybe moreso than a tired battery, it seems 3G chip in the 3GS uses approx half as much power. And if this trend carries on to the next gen iPhone... :)

I somewhat disagree with you about the battery problem. The fact is the phone was not designed to run the 3G and wifi at the same time. Whether you using mywi (like an AP) or PDA net via wireless, which uses an adhoc network, heavy downloading results in battery drainage even while plugged in. On the other hand, tethering over USB is the best and continues to charge even under heavy downloading. This is a bit pointless as most here are looking for an iPad solution, but tethering to my MBP over USB is fantastic. Bluetooth tethering is right in between wifi and USB. If you are going to stream from netflix and the likes tethering is not the best idea, but for surfing, e-mail, and mild YouTube / streaming it works great.

One good technique to use is to take your phone out of its case and set it somewhere that will help keep it cool. Obviously, the phone heats up with the wifi and 3G going at the same time so helping it stay cool is a big plus in relation to performance and battery strain. I even go as far as putting the phone near a fan, a/c vent, or something similar if available. This helps as excessive heat is never good.

With the aforementioned techniques your phone and battery will be fine. I have been tethering since it was first released, on the JB, almost 3 years ago on the 1st generation iPhone and even that phone still works good and holds a good charge. The secret is to keep the phone cool.
