Navigon released a press release this morning, stating that v1.2 will be out for Europe soon and will feature text-to-speech and integrated iPod controls (so you won't have to leave the program to change playlists or songs). It will also feature auto day/night modes.

Hamburg, 18 August 2009 - Since the iPhone has been equipped with NAVIGON MobileNavigator software, Apple smartphone owners have been guided to any destination in up to 40 countries in Europe reliably and conveniently - with a host of functions to make navigation simple and safe, including Reality View Pro, Lane Assistant Pro, Speed Assistant and easy operation specific to the iPhone, such as vertical and horizontal map display as well as automatic continuation of navigation following telephone calls. NAVIGON expanded the comprehensive feature set shortly after launch with extras such as the route planning function and Radar Info.

Now, NAVIGON is again increasing the MobileNavigator's range of functions - with a whole series of features to make navigation even more convenient and getting to the destination more entertaining. "As stated, we have succeeded in making additional functions for the Apple iPhone available in a short period of time, and aligned the software to more of the device's characteristic control elements," says Gerhard Mayr, Vice-President Worldwide Mobile Phones & New Markets at NAVIGON. "The new, free software update includes the Text-to-Speech, iPod Control and Location Sharing functions as well as automatic switching between day and night mode. This means the MobileNavigator for the iPhone remains the right investment for our customers." The NAVIGON Text-to-Speech function is a valuable extra which helps to improve orientation in cities in particular. The feature reads out street names, allowing the driver to concentrate fully on the road ahead - and not on looking for hidden signs with street names that are difficult to read and divert attention from driving. "Our technology partner SVOX provides Text-to-Speech (TTS) in several languages to ensure safer navigation,"1 continues Gerhard Mayr. "

"Our SVOX Mobile product offers a tailored speech solution which can be integrated flexibly into mobile devices such as mobile telephones or mobile navigation devices," says Eric Lehmann, Chief Sales Officer for SVOX AG in Zurich. "We are delighted to have augmented the precise NAVIGON software with our solution, making navigation on the iPhone even more convenient."

Two new functions ensure increased entertainment. Seamless integration of the iPod Control means it is simple and quick to set up the required playlist on the integrated iPod while navigating. Simply select the iPod symbol on the map displayed to select playlists, titles and albums with ease, listen to songs again or leave it to the device to generate a random selection of songs. Another touch takes the user back to navigation. When the navigation software is making a voice announcement, the volume of the music currently playing is smoothly turned down.

The Location Sharing function ensures entertainment at the destination. Select an address or a POI such as a restaurant or museum, for example, and the destination can simply be emailed to friends and acquaintances. If the recipient also has the MobileNavigator, they simply click on a link with the address or special destination in the email to reach the meeting point via the fastest route - the navigation software starts automatically when the link is activated and guides the user directly to the destination. This means users can exchange positions and destinations with each other simply and conveniently.

Automatic switching between day and night mode is also practical and simple. The colours of the map shown change depending on the time of day or night, guaranteeing optimal clarity of display at all times. This allows drivers to recognise the route as quickly as possible, improves orientation and brings greater safety while driving.

Great! Now I hope TomTom gets off their duffs and announces what their first update will bring. Hopefully, TTS, lane assist, and a $30 price cut, so they can sell more...

Very cool! I have not yet made a purchase, but after reading this, I think this is the one I'm going with.

Question for anyone that will answer, hopefully wording this correctly. I'm very used to using Google maps for getting around when in unfamiliar areas. Example; when on vacation in Orlando last June, I need to run out for some stuff for the kids, and beer :), and simply searched for a walmart in the area. Google maps finds all within the area I currently am, and I can select one, and map directions to it from there. I know this might be a dumb question, but does Navigon do the same thing? Or must I have the actual address of the location I which to go to? i.e., not just be able to type walmart, or taco bell, or whatever?

Did that make sense? Thanks!

Very nice Navigon!

Now...I hope that tomtom wakes up, and announces something as good as these guys. Atleast Lane Assistant and TTS and iPod Controls would be nice

You can search for Points of Interest like a Walmarts in your area in Navigon but currently the search engine doesn't work very well. I found that narrowing it down by city works ok though.

Any stores built in the last year might or might not show up on Navigon's POIs but they probably will unless they are really really new on TomTom.

I think the easiest way is to search in google maps it's probably going to know more specific poi than navigon, and save it as a contact, then navigate to it in navigon.

that's gonna be cool. can't wait to try out TomTom in a few minutes

This is so awesome!!!! I love Navigon!!! I have been using it for the last week and it's been perfect!!! TTS will perfect it and the iPod Controls are icing on the cake:):):)

I just wish the UI was as clear as tomtom... Everything on it is TOO SMALL! You cant even read street names.

Since the press release specifically relates to a Europe release, I wonder when US will get the 1.2.0 update.

Well, when the 1.1 came out in Europe it came out for USA a couple of days later. It shouldn't be too long :)

DONE Deal

This is the deciding factor for me. I am definitely going to get Navigon right now. Looking forward to it!

Now, if they would make it so you can preview your route by a list, that would be almost everything needed.

I have been itching to purchase Navigon. TTS is a huge deciding factor for me, but I will try and wait just a bit longer to see if there is any news regarding the TomTom car kit. More specifically, I'm interested in its compatibility with other GPS software.

Nice, you cant go wrong with all this functionality for just $70.
I use Navigon every day.
Well done, cant wait for text-to-speech

Yep. I've been using Navigon for a couple of weeks and I've been thoroughly impressed. The addition of TTS will address my only major concern (other than the crappy POI search engine -- I use Maps/Contacts instead).

I just wish for one change & one addition and the v1.2 update would be perfect for me....

Fix the text legibility issue while navigating. Either remove the white stroke on the text, change it to black, or just use a larger black bolded font. Any of these would fix the issue.

Add in a route overview page so that I can see the route beforehand.

The app does allow you to see the overall route, but without detail (i.e. street names) iirc. From the map screen, tap the map, then tap the icon in the lower rt-hand corner. You should get an overhead map view that includes both your start and end points.

I understand this. Pointless across the state of Texas, or long trips though.

There needs to be a list view.
