The app does allow you to see the overall route, but without detail (i.e. street names) iirc. From the map screen, tap the map, then tap the icon in the lower rt-hand corner. You should get an overhead map view that includes both your start and end points.

They need a listing, so you can see the route/roads you will be taking. TomTom does have that, but lacks in other areas.

Does anyone use backgrounder to keep Navigon 'alive' so that you can quickly re-open Navigon following an interruptive call?

Awesome, NAVIGON is really sticking it to TomTom, proving that they can churn out updates (2 allready) when TomTom is just now leaving the gate.

Rock on NAVIGON!

I just wish for one change & one addition and the v1.2 update would be perfect for me....

Fix the text legibility issue while navigating. Either remove the white stroke on the text, change it to black, or just use a larger black bolded font. Any of these would fix the issue.

Add in a route overview page so that I can see the route beforehand.

+1

"The feature reads out street names, allowing the driver to concentrate fully on the road ahead - and not on looking for hidden signs with street names that are difficult to read and divert attention from driving."

Is he talking about street names outside, or from the app itself? :p

This was my sole reasoning for jailbreaking my iPhone. As previously said, it works great. The only thing some people *might* find annoying is that Navigon will continue to give voice prompts as you continue driving (over top of your conversation)... I actually like this behavior though.

I don't understand why they can't release the europe and US/Canada versions simultaneously like everyone else...

They make us wait two weeks!

in horse racing they call that off to the glue factory while navigon goes for the roses:D

Just purchased the Navigon software today. I'm about to leave the office and drive to a few places while using it. That said, I went outside to acquire a GPS signal (no chance of getting that in my office - which is steel and has special thermal coating on all the windows!). The 3GS/Navigon acquired my location very rapidly, and I've been impressed with the mapping and options that already in 1.1. For the most part, it exceeds the nav unit in my 2004 BMW X5.

Looking forward to 1.2 - especially now that I've seen the screen grabs posted in another thread.

I'm in agreement that the software needs the route listing in text format. I'd also really like the traffic data. Google Maps has been clutch for that info. I suppose I could start in Google Maps to get the traffic info and then go into Navigon, but that defeats the purpose. Hope that feature gets added soon.

Other than that, it seems that Navigon's software is much more polished that what I've seen with the TomTom release. TT needs to be more transparent about what's coming out next. At $100, they could at least do that much.

Thanks to all for the info on Navigon...it really helped me make my purchasing decision.

Add in a route overview page so that I can see the route beforehand.

If you start by specifying your journey via More->Route with your current location as your starting point, once you calculate the route you get an overview of the entire route which you can zoom into to street level. Once you're ready to go you can then start navigation.

You guys know if there is anyway with Navigon to reverse route? So when i choose to navigate to address B, is there anyway way to reverse that so it gets me back to where i started. Im not talking about the Take me home feature. The only way i can see to do it is to create a route, save it. Then go back into it, edit it, and move up the destination to the starting point.

I am in the market and checking out the facts between Navigon and Tomtom.

I must say that Navigons announcements are great - TTS upcoming, I also saw an announcement for TMC later down the road (1.3?) which is fantastic.

Tomtoms silence on their features and the car kit though make it hard to decide anything about them. I wish their communication skills were on the same level ;)

I'm curious if anyone would like this also -- I was driving around today with Navigon and I was thinking it'd be great if they gave us an icon to represent the strength of the GPS signal. That way, it'd help the user find the best spot in their car for the iPhone to be mounted and, personally, I'd just like to know how strong the signal is at a glance.

GREAT Idea! That seems like an obvious feature that no one has mentioned. Every GPS I have ever owned has a signal indicator.

Can someone confirm something for me --

Would you be able to use the TomTom car kit dock with this GPS app? I heard yes.

Great news.

As an aside, can someone tell me how to get the Route Demo to work in Navigon. I cannot find it for the life of me.

Well, not right away at least.

If it's true that the car kit will work with 3rd parties (remember this is TomTom who isn't exactly best at communicating info about their products), then NAVIGON will have to build in support in their app for it to work.

Yes, but if you bought navigon at the sale price and just got our free update they mentioned to 1.1... How much will it cost to update to 1.2?

To be honest i am not that impressed with 1.1 and experienced signal issues since free update so feel wasted free update. i hope they dont charge for the people that bought it early at least until 2.0

Well, when the 1.1 came out in Europe it came out for USA a couple of days later. It shouldn't be too long :)

There have been absolutely no indications that would indicate v1.2 being a paid upgrade...

If you had read the press release linked to in the first post you would have seen the magic words "iPhone 3G and 3G S owners will soon be able to upgrade their NAVIGON MobileNavigator software with another free update that brings additional features. " Note the word 'free'? That means you won't have to pay for it!

Well not full postcode search (still limited to first 5 digits), but they say they are working on it. It generally only means an extra couple of screens to get the address you are after though (as long as you know the road and number in addition to the postcode).
