I got my iPhone today and used the Navigon App (bought from a member on this forum - thanks Ntombi!) for a 45 minute trip. It worked perfectly. I was concerned about polish and ease of use, and I can say that this App feels great to use and is a very effective standalone GPS replacement.

I am using this mount, which, for the price, is great. $9 shipped and has a solid hold.
Glad you're enjoying it.

Thanks for the mount recommendation. I'm going to check it out. Did you order it from that site?

Indeed. Never heard of the site before, but it has a 9+ on reseller ratings, and was by far the cheapest mount I could find. Got to me quick with no issues.

Thanks!

I just ordered. I really like the Griffin WindowSeat, but am waiting for the iPhone 4 attachment, and I can always use a backup. Can't go wrong with nine bucks, right? :)

BTW, where in Boston are you? I was raised in Cambridge and Brookline. I haven't lived there since college, but it's still home.

How often does Navigon update their maps? I've read that TomTom updates quarterly, though I don't know if that's true.

1.6 brought the first map update since the original product last year. So, probably annually.

As far as I know, neither have said how they will handle on-going map updates. I believe they typically charge a fee for map updates on their standalone units, and I would be surprised if they do not implement this in their iPhone applications in the near future.

v1.6 seems to crash regularly ... any ideas? ... i do notice some correlation that when TomTom is running, it crashes more ... but if i close (from multitask view) TomTom, and run only Navigon still get some crashes tho less ... thoughts? thx

Hmm. Is this on iPhone 4 or 3GS?

It's certainly plausible that running two GPS intensive apps simultaneously (or at least 'multitasking' with saved states and whatever) could create competitive conditions that are unstable for the app.

Perhaps something subtle in how Options are set for TomTom and Navigon -- for instance fighting over who controls iPod running in background?

I have 1.6 on iPhone 4 and have not experienced crashes. Some odd A2DP behavior yes, but crashes no.

Why would you be running both simultaneously? Perhaps they're fighting over the GPS connection, or perhaps they both eat up so much RAM that your phone is having difficulty.

Navigon v1.6 on my iPhone 4 as well as my wife's 3GS running iOS4 has run perfectly! I like it more now than ever.

I do also have TomTom installed which apparently never updates their maps. There is one road that I have driven on between work and home for years that still doesn't show up in their map and another that says it's 1-way even though it's actually 2-way. I'm in the near northwest suburbs of Chicago, not somewhere out in the sticks.

For me, Navigon is way better than TomTom.

yes, definitely see issue while running simultaneous; although TomTom doesn't seem to demonstrate same behavior ... but I also have some 'shut downs' when just waiting for all the destination features (e.g. weather, parking, etc) to load even w/o TomTom running

TomTom, and Navigon, maps are updated by users who submit change requests to their maps (or specifically TelAtlas/Navteq maps); so if someone finds an error, just go out to TomTom and submit for update/fix

[edit] i use 3GS w/ iOS4

I seem to have lost my traffic option when I went from iphone 3gs to my iphone 4. Emailed them about it last week but no response. Hate to think $24.99 was wasted. Anyone have any ideas how I can get my live traffic back?

Simply re-do the in-app purchase from Extras. The App Store will recognize you already paid once and won't charge you again.

For whatever reason, some users have needed to re-do their previous in-app purchases following the update to 1.6 (again, this is no repeat cost) while others (myself included) didn't.

Either way, the functionality is there for you at no extra charge. Slightly annoying when you have to re-do it, but nothing lost :)

Is this a good replacement for Google Maps? Or is this something in a different class?

I Can't Purchase Live Traffic

I keep trying, but, when I agree to buy, I get a pop up that reads, "You can't purchase this item with this account. You must purchase the app that this item is for before you can purchase he item." Then I get another pp-up that reads, "Cannot connect to iTunes Store." I'm confused. I purchased the "My Region" version 2 days ago. Shouldn't I be able to purchase Live Traffic now? Am I missing something?

I think you can only download it for the full app?

Navigating to Contact's Address with Apartment number fails

Has anyone else noticed that when you use the Contacts option (i.e. going through your address book) to navigate to an address, and that address has an apartment number in it, MobileNavigator (MN) fails miserably?

Lets say the address is
71 Avery Rd
#12 (or apt 13, or Unit B, whatever)
Atlanta, GA 30309

MN will respond with:
1) navigate to "Atlanta, GA 30309" (and completely ignore the address), or
2) "The address for this contact was not found in the map database" (even though, a) the house has been there for over 100 years and b) if you type in the address, sans apartment number, through the traditional route it will find it just fine).

Yes, and it is seriously annoying. But from what I have gleaned reading other forums and reviews this problem is not restricted to MN. I saw comments that TomTom and (and maybe it was CoPilot, too?) also suffer from this inability to interpret an address with extended info.

It hit me hard yesterday. Was taking someone to a medical appointment and the address had a Suite # in it. I knew the way, but thought I'd give MN's TrafficLive an opportunity to show me a better way. On the page just before routing begins --- the one showing you the destination address above and the weather, parking, gas, etc. below -- I glanced at the weather and then tapped to get the route. I failed to notice that the destination displayed was only a zip code.

The first several steps in the route were the same as I normally go, and the next step was not too odd (cool, maybe I'll learn a timesaver here!), but then it became clear the route was headed miles in the wrong direction since the zip code's center and my destination were now at odds. Had to navigate through many extra traffic lights to get back where I belonged.

My fault for not noticing that the address had been truncated. But gee, I would appreciate an alert that indicates MN needs help parsing the address correctly.

And really it is not clear why MN (or other GPS apps) should have any difficulty targeting the destination correctly. From the Contacts app I tapped the same address and Google Maps nailed it.

I sent a note to Navigon pleading for them to correct this. I'm sure others have before me -- and the more we users squeek about it the more likely they'll take care of it sooner than later!

Thanks for the recommendation. I got it today, and tried it out. It's a lot more shaky than the WindowSeat, but doesn't seem to be unstable at all. It's definitely worth $9! And the site shipped on time, communicated well, and I could pay through PayPal, all of which I appreciate. Thanks again!

Does that mount allow for phones with cases to be used?
Yes.

Is this a good replacement for Google Maps? Or is this something in a different class?
Entirely different. If you've ever used a stand-alone personal navigation device, or one built into the car, this is like that. Google maps is fine for what it is, but this has all the features of a full-fledged GPS unit. No contest.

If Google Maps is enough for you, than don't waste the money or the GBs in your iPhone, but if you regularly use maps or other navigation assistance, Navigon is well worth it, especially now that it's on sale. :)

One thing I haven't tested yet is whether this update improves A2DP behavior when using a bluetooth device. Specifically, when wearing a Jawbone ICON, the first syllables of text-to-speech instructions fail to be heard. Directing audio through the iPhone speaker sounds fine, but through Bluetooth it seems as if the app has spoken something before the rest of the system informs the headset it should be listening. I realize that this might be an issue with how the ICON and iPhone interact and have nothing to do with Navigon. If this update doesn't fix it I'll contact Jawbone and see if they can help -- so far I've had good support experience with them.

I'm having the same issue now with Navigon 1.6. The first part of any audio commands from Navigon are clipping when played over my bluetooth Motorola T505. Previous versions of Navigon were just fine. Using ios4.01 on a 3GS if that matters. Anyone else noticing this bluetooth clipping? Thanks!

I thought with my new iphone 4 I could just get by with google maps but honestly without voice directions it can be .. well dangerous lol.

I really like the price tag of this app, especially if I can just get the east region since thats where I only drive basically.

So my question is: Is there any difference between the Full us vs Just the East Region (other then more maps)

Does both come with the panoramic 3d view and live traffic, or do both require you to purchase them separately (it sounds like traffic you are charged separately regardless, wasn't sure if the 3d view was as well.)

weather updates?

Where are they located in the app? I don't see them after the update.
