Add all the :) you want. You're still trying to invent your own plan that AT&T chooses not to sell. You can justify it all day long, but it's still theft and it's still wrong. It's no different than me walking across the street to the 7-11, buying a candy bar for $1 and slipping two into my pocket because I feel they should be 3-for-$1. AT&T is not choosing to sell you what you want. That doesn't give you the right to take it anyway.

Now if you admit what you're doing is wrong, that's one thing. I just get upset when people steal and try to pin the blame for their crime on the victim. I'd much rather see a post where someone asks how to steal their service than try to justify why they need to resort to stealing. That's just lame.

Yeah and the jews hiding from the nazis was "illegal" as well. Laws are not always just.

This thread just wont die. Too many people who think if they post long enough rationalizations, that will morph them into honest people.

Soooo i take it that these ppl are not looking for answers. Hello?? I answered this dumb question??? Close this thread! Kinda like when your boss asks if your going to be late and then you tell him the reason why... Answer the damn question!! Idiots...

There's a guy I work with that uses a tethering app on his iPhone. I will see whcih he uses but he certainly uses it for his iPad daily.

Theft of service no matter how you twist it.

Really @Givemeabrek? I have an UNLIMITED data plan that I pay a large amount of money for. They are charging outrageous fees for what should cost less than half as much as I'm paying. And so when I want to utilize the UNLIMITED plan that I paid for with my own money to the best of my abilities in order to meet my needs, how is that theft? If the plan was advertised as a limited data plan, that would be fine, but when I signed up 2 years ago, there was no mention of tethering in the contract, and them changing the contract on me is the real crime here. I'm locked in for two years and get charged extreme amounts of money if I make any changes to my plan. But they take advantage of us and change the plan terms, knowing that since I'm locked in, there is nothing I can do except leave, which means paying them an outrageous amount of money. Either way they come out on top. Lets reconsider this and decide where the real theft is in this situation.

Sorry to be so blunt, but somebody had to say it. I hope there are no hard feelings, as I'm just explaining the situation from my viewpoint. Cheers! :)

Yeah and the jews hiding from the nazis was "illegal" as well. Laws are not always just.

Well ATT doesn't even offer unlimited plans anymore. And when I signed into mine two years ago, there was no mention of tethering in the contract. At all. But now that we're all locked into a plan for two years, suddenly it's fair for them to switch up the rules on us with no warning whatsoever, giving us no choice but to abide to contract terms that I never intended to pay for when i signed up? If you want to make yourself feel bigger than the rest of us, be our guest, as you've gotta have something in life to be proud of, and it obviously isn't your logic.

Does PDANet actually hide tethering from AT&T? Anyone getting notices?
I don't really have a reason to tether but I could see using it on a rare occasion.

Verizon iphone 4 user here!

Hello, can someone please link to me the answer to the original question?? I got bored after 3 pages of people arguing over the ethics and legalities of TO TETHER or NOT TO TETHER..:p

Anyway.. I tether.. judge me if you want, everyone has their vices and downfalls. So you may not tether, but you might purposely step on all ladybugs or even something more horrific which you hide from everyone. I don't know like maybe you eat chalk or toilet paper.. no that's not illegal but I happen to think your gross.

Anywho...

Who knows if it's right or wrong to Tether bottom line is I DON'T CARE.

So did anyone answer the question?? Will PDANet Tether hide the Tether from Verizon or not!?

Thanks!!

That's an awful analogy. A better one would used often is comparing the unlimited data plan to an all-you-can-eat buffets. The foods only for you(your device) not for anyone you care to try to sneak in. I can understand the aversion to having to pay an additional fee when you have a tiered plan though.

That's a awful one to! If you wanna go with the all you can eat analogy think of it this way you can eat all you want you just have to use there silverware. You can't bring and use your own silverware. Either way you are the one consuming the food (data) it's just how you consume it. Sounds dumb huh? That's what makes us so mad it's our food we paid for it let us eat it how ever we want.

I use PDAnet and haven't been told anything from AT&T. But then again, when I tether I don't do it all day and night, nor download a ton of stuff. Just use it for the iPad for when I'm not working.

1) it's the thread that just won't die!

2) I see it more like an bottomless drink at a restaurant. It's unlimited within their rules (at the restaurant usually that means just for one person, and until you leave the restaurant. And that you use the glass they provide, not fill up that ol' team gulp from 7-11, even if you fill it 1 glass at a time)

You seriously decided to bump this thread and quote something I said a year and a half ago? You could have at least brought something new to the discussion. Congrats!

Hi guys,

I got some bad news. I just got the so-called "text of death", after heavy PDANet tethering always with the Level II tethering enabled. Here's my time line:
I always had unlimited data. In April, I (stupidly and regrettably) changed to the 5 GB tethering plan, and used that until June, when I discovered jailbreaking and thus free tethering. That month I jailbroke my phone, and switched to the $30 3GB plan since I figured I wouldn't need to pay the extra $20 for tethering if I could simply tether for free with PDANet. So, for a few months I did SOME tethering, on and off, but never got the text of death. But, for the last 2 months, I've needed to tether a lot more, to the tune of about 1 to 1.5 GB per month. Well, AT&T somehow or another detected it despite Level II Hide Tether enabled, and sent me the "text of death", informing me that I have been detected . So, if they are willing to send me the text of death (and I don't even have unlimited), they most definitely will send it to someone with unlimited data. Tether responsibly!

Text of death or you just got busted for "misusing" your plan?
;)
Add tethering and don't worry about these texts.

pdanet hide tether works

my name is un important but i had pdanet for 1 year till i got internet at home and i used approx.30-40 gb of data per month i always used hide tether and used level 1 for webpages u can use settings on browswer to open as desktop or mobile but the hide tether does work now i use tether me its free but u need jailbreak and if ur ios6.0.1 like mine tether booting sucks so dont let battery die lol and so u know i am happy with my verizon iphone4 16gb cdma phone no plans to upgrade either:D

Hey guys know no one knows 100% for sure how Att is catching people tethering but it sucks that they take away your unlimited data if you tether :(

Most of the people using MiWi have been caught and because of this PDAnet has come out with an update to their tethering app that claims to "hide tethering usage". It uses different levels of security to do this (1 and 2) and seems to try and fool Att into thinking your computer is an iPhone while you tether.

The only problem? There is no way for an Att person to see if PDAnet is actually working and fooling Att to think your computer is an iPhone. This is because when they take away your unlimited and upgrade you to the 4gb data pro plan it doesn't tell you if you are using tethering data or regular iPhone data.

The solution? If a Verizon iPhone owner who has unlimited data purchases the $20/mo 2gb tethering plan option, they keep their unlimited data and have a separate bucket of tether data to draw from. This means that if a Verizon owner with the 2gb tethering option uses PDAnet "Level II" protection to tether and can tell us Att owners if it draws from their 2gb tethering data bucket or if PDAnet actually fools Verizon to think that you aren't tethering (if it only uses your unlimited).

If anyone knows a Verizon iPhone owner that already has the tethering feature or is willing to do this it would be greatly appreciated by myself and the community :)

Eventually Verizon is going to kill off unlimited data as well and if they do that then they will target Verizon unlimited data owners as well. If you do this and PDAnet works you will also be helping yourself down the line avoid Verizon switching your unlimited plan in the future once it's not available.

The steps:
- Verizon iPhone owner w/ unlimited data
- Purchase the 2gb tethering add on
- Use PDAnet to tether using level 2 protection
- See if it used your unlimited data or your 2gb tethering data

Thanks again for your help.

Ok you know what I'm gonna put in my two cents on this. I dumped 3 AT&T lines because I used to have an unlimited plan and they broke contract by slowing me down. That's stealing stop defending these greedy scumbags!
I ticks me off so much that people like u just say (connect to wifi) so in other words your expecting me to pay two data bills to operate 1 device! Or go to Starbucks to use my phone screw that screw you and screw AT&T
Now I pay about the same for 5 unlimited lines with sprint as I did with 3 extremely limited lines with AT&T. Tethering is extra but you keep unlimited on your phone at least.
These company's have been stealing from and raping you long enough. Don't defend those criminals and then try to treat me like one for using what I pay for. I pay for no limits and that's what I'm gonna get.

Awesome. What are the odds that what you posted hasn't been posted before? As long and as old as this thread is, the odds must be astronomical. No one has ranted about AT&T or said they paid for unlimited and they'll get it. Or called AT&T criminals.

You've gone to Sprint and you are still bitter. Sad.:(

Hello, can someone please link to me the answer to the original question?? I got bored after 3 pages of people arguing over the ethics and legalities of TO TETHER or NOT TO TETHER..:p

Exactly.

I got a letter from AT&T that threatened to kill my unlimited plan if I didn't stop tethering my laptop through my iPhone.

PDANet has a stealth mode, but the June Fabrics Technology developer of it told me that he had no idea how AT&T was detecting it as he uses the same APN as all other data traffic.

So stealth mode is just a hunch and probably won't work.

Ok you know what I'm gonna put in my two cents on this. I dumped 3 AT&T lines because I used to have an unlimited plan and they broke contract by slowing me down.

First off, well done digging this back up.

Second, it's been ages. However, I'm pretty sure they didn't break the contract. I think they just enacted a clause buried deep down about using too much data. If people would have read the fine print, they would have known that "unlimited" never truly was.

Beyond that, I fail to see what your reply has to do with mine. But it's a Friday and I'm bored, so on we go...

That's stealing...

Then take your business elsewhere. Oh, I see you did. So why are you bringing this back up again?

stop defending these greedy scumbags!

I'm not defending AT&T. I have the same grandfathered unlimited plan with the same complaints. And I agree that they're greedy scumbags.

My original point was that if you're looking for a way to tether without changing your data plan, at least be a Man about it and ask for help stealing service. Comments about how "it's not stealing" and "they're forcing me to do this" is a bunch of crap. Grow a pair of balls. Stop blaming other people for your (the general you) bad behavior. I expect that from children, not grown adults.

I ticks me off so much that people like u...

Sorry, I'm a "you", not a "u". Have a little respect for those you're speaking to.

...just say (connect to wifi) so in other words your expecting me to pay two data bills to operate 1 device! Or go to Starbucks to use my phone screw that screw you and screw AT&T

I NEVER said any such thing. Don't put words in my mouth.

Now I pay about the same for 5 unlimited lines with sprint as I did with 3 extremely limited lines with AT&T. Tethering is extra but you keep unlimited on your phone at least.

Well, goody, goody gum-drops I guess. You had a problem. You solved it. Yay you.

And again, why are digging up an old thread to basically tell us you solved your issue? And if you really need to let people know that, why not just say your bit and move on? And why quote a post that really wasn't attacking you to begin with?

These company's have been stealing from and raping you long enough. Don't defend those criminals and then try to treat me like one for using what I pay for. I pay for no limits and that's what I'm gonna get.

Again, I didn't defend them. I too have no Facetime over cellular, no tethering, etc. But that's the contract I signed. If I don't like it, then it's time to switch plans or carriers, not just steal their service because it's not what I want. I wish we lived in a world where I could just take the things I desire. That would be awesome. But sadly, that's not reality.

One last time, I never have and never will defend AT&T. I don't even mind if someone wants to know how to steal their service for whatever reason. The only thing I have issue with is the people who pretend they're doing no wrong and come up with all kinds of excuses to justify their behavior. That's nothing more than lying to justify stealing.

So what do you guys think about having unlimited data and being slowed down if you reach 3g/month? I'm not talking about tethering. Just using your iphone like how it should be used and all of the sudden your data is slowed down 10x because you've reached 3gig for the month on your unlimited plan.

Poor guys. You should have just gone with Verizon. I regularly tether 80GB a month with my unlimited data, and not a peep.

These whole arguments end up in discussing if att or verizon are abusive or not. I still remember when the government allowed a foreign company like T-Mobile to offer gsm services in the US. They allowed them but gave them the sh... 1700 frequency that no phone was able to use. So, is the wireless market cartelized in the US? If so, then, is it a bit abusive what they do?
