I think the Pro will last a wee bit more then "a little longer"

Don't underestimate Apple's ability to make you 'need' an upgrade. ;)

So no UI sluggishness?

The betas are sluggish purely because they're betas. But I would not expect iOS 11 to slow down any current-generation/new device. Hell, my iPhone 7 Plus feels even quicker on iOS 11 but my iPad mini 4 has definitely slowed down.

I am having a bit of the opposite. My iPhone 6S+ has been slow and buggy since the upgrade to IOS 11, but my iPad Pro 9.7 and 12.9 both run great.

Waiting to see if things improve on my phone with the next release, but otherwise I may try a backup and restore.

This is good to hear. I've been looking around for info specifically about the 2017 iPad running iOS 11. So no UI sluggishness?
APFS ( as of iOS 10.3 ) and 64bit requirements seem to make the beta much snappier than previous betas that have rolled out. Not sure how the final product will work, but it looks quite promising.

While that is positive news that the betas are running efficiently with the 2017 9.7 iPad, a lot can change once between now and when the official iOS update arrives in September. The two biggest things to monitor is the battery life and the responsiveness of the performance of the iPad.

What do you mean by this? Would you mind elaborating please?

What I meant was if you just use your iPad 4 for web browsing, watching movies, and light processing activities, iPad 4 is still usable. Not of course "snappy", but if you don't mind waiting a few seconds to load a webpage, it should work ok. Even my iPad 3 Was still usable, for the battery still after five years gives a good charge and I used it daily since 2012... I wanted a lighter iPad to use for lectures, so bought the iPad 2017. Gave my iPad 3 to my father-in-law and he loves it. Image that...

My wife's iPad 3 white is still in prime condition and for some reason seems to run faster and smother than my previous iPad 3 (midnight color). Interesting. But once she picked up my new iPad and started to use it..she said she noticed that her iPad 3 is significantly slower than my new one...

I see what her Christmas is going to be....

@akash.nu thanks for posting this thread!

I'm an Android guy for my personal mobile devices, always have been since the days of the original Motorola Droid. The Android tablet market is very bleak and I'm in need of a replacement tablet. My plan is to grab one mid-late next week to play with while on vacation and I was debating between the 10.5 Pro or the new non-Pro. After reading this thread I'm now going to take the money I WOULD have spent on the Pro and roll that to the 9.7 and get the 128 GB and cellular capable (I use Project Fi on my phone and have a data-only SIM I can pop in to pull data from my plan's bucket if I need/want to) and STILL save almost $100.

It'll be an interesting experiment to say the least. I'm not horribly deep in the Apple ecosystem but I do have the 2 Macs. Moving to an iPhone would be a little more "painful" as I would also have to change cell providers.

Having used it for a couple of days now I can definitely see the speed difference and loving the split screen stuff. No more flipping back and forth when you're using 2 apps for some time or wanna keep one main app available all the time. Also more apps are available in the memory.

Didn't get Apple care + though. Not sure if I made the right decision.

AppleCare+ is $99 plus I think $50 for each incident (max two). Out of warranty replacement cost is $249. Personally, I'd just wing it.

Yeah I generally don't buy Apple care for iOS devices. Bought for my Macs though and only ever needed to replace the casing once on my old MacBook Air 2011 and only got the MacBook Air 2013 cleaned once.

Apple care covers macs for at least 3 years but all other devices are only 2 years, which means I get only 1 extra year. I feel like it's a bit of waste of money for me because I take care of my devices really well and they're always spotless.

I'm still on iPhone 6 and have literally dropped it like twice since the day I bought it. Never dropped my last iPad. Never ever dropped any of my Macs. Even the genius was astonished seeing how clean and scratch free my Mac is.

Yeah for non-Pros the value of AppleCare+ is more questionable. $149 v.s. $249 assuming your iPad will get damaged, the $100 "luck" factor doesn't seem large enough to justify it.

Good to hear your positive experiences thus far. What are your thoughts with the lack of laminated display? Any issues under certain lighting conditions with the brightness maxed?

I can definitely see the reflection on this one way more than my previous iPad. But most of my usage will be indoors and unless the screen is directly facing the light source it's not a problem at all.

Nope, V-Moda Crossfade 2 Wireless headphones. And I can definitely tell a difference in the audio quality of the speakers. The 10.5 inch pro has a horrible low-end volume situation.
Those aren't particularly good 'phones. You need to spend a bit more for something decent.

The iPad's 4 speakers are great for watching films.

The iPad Pro 10.5 will outlast the iPad 2017 by a minimum of 2 yrs and a maximum of 4+ yrs.

No it won't, because next year something new will be added to the Pro and everyone will declare the current 10.5 dead.

The 2017 iPad is a pretty nice option if you don't want to spend big bucks. This is kind of off topic, but it is amazing how far this entry level iPad has come compared to the original 2010 entry level iPad:
  • 2gb RAM vs 250mb
  • 32 GB storage vs 16GB
  • Retina Display vs Standard HD Display
  • 1 lb. vs 1.5 lbs
  • .29 in thick vs .5 in
  • Front and rear cameras vs no camera
  • Auto sleep/wake
  • Touch ID and Apple Wallet
  • Multitasking Gestures & Virtual Trackpad
  • Slide over & App switcher
  • iCloud, iCloud Drive and wireless backups
  • iMessage and FaceTime
  • Picture in Picture capability
  • Find my iPhone or iPad and Find my Friends
  • Improvements/refinements to iWork, iMovie, etc.
  • Coming to iOS 11: drag/drop, dock, improved virtual keyboard, File App
  • $330 vs $500 entry level pricing
I understand that a lot of folks are frustrated with iPad's pace of innovation, and there is definitely room for improvement. Nevertheless, it is sometimes easy to forget how much things have changed in the last 7 years with these devices.

Lol, ain't that the truth. :p

Air 2 onwards, reckon could last as long as desktops and laptops but Apple marketing can be pretty darned effective getting people to want to buy the next shiny new iThing.

Apple's marketing is some of the best in the tech industry. They market all their products so uniquely and they exemplify its capabilities and hardware perfectly. It's almost impossible to resist in some situations. I remember when the Apple Watch released, they marketed that exquisitely and the hype for that product was soaring when it released. Expensive tech, but I have no complaints for what I am receiving.

I hope the next iPad Pro (probably 18 months later) is not that stunning so my current iPad Pro 10.5 can last for at least 3 years.:p

When my mom's iPad 2 goes, I'll will definitely get her one. She's refusing to replace it right now; but I know it will be a step up from the iPad 2 and much lighter.

When the next iPad Pro comes out, if the latency is even better, I'm there; and I'll risk using this current 12.9" as my commuter / work one (body parts crossed by that time the repairs will be made to the transit hubs and signals, so the commute won't be so "wonderful")...but that's hopefully 18 months from now at least (have to buy a new Mac before I get another iPad Pro, unless a Mini Pro comes out.)
