Become a MacRumors Supporter for $50/year with no ads, ability to filter front page stories, and private forums.
The more people that do this the faster the 1 year commitments/contracts will roll out. There is zero chance that these streaming services won't do this if everyone is subscribing for only 3-4 months out of the year.

Netflix will be first to do it then every other streaming service will follow within six months.

Enjoy it while it lasts.

then you can rotate them every other year.

I don't know how much Netflix makes from their $6.99/mo ad supported plan (they don't release that exact info), but when they reported earnings back in April 2023, they noted in their shareholder letter that it brings in more money than both their $9.99/mo Basic plan *and* their $15.49/mo Standard plan.

From shareholder letter, page 5:

In the US for instance, our ads plan already has a total ARM* (subscription + ads) greater than our standard plan. So this month we’ll upgrade the feature set of our ads plan to include 1080p versus 720p video quality and two concurrent streams in all 12 ads markets – starting with Canada and Spain today. We believe these enhancements will make our offering even more attractive to a broader set of consumers and further strengthen engagement for existing and new subscribers to the ads plan.

*ARM = Average Revenue per paid Member
Does product placement included in ad revenue or does that go to produce said content?

Netflix got eyeballs addicted with binging and now ads knowing well enough its a cash cow and most subs will digest it.

Netflix today quietly eliminated its most affordable ad-free plan in the United States and the United Kingdom, raising the price of ad-free streaming options.

Netflix-Smaller-4.jpg

In the U.S., the Basic plan was priced at $9.99 per month, and with its removal, ad-free streaming now starts at $15.49 per month. Netflix subscribers can opt for the $6.99 per month "Standard with ads" plan, but that price point includes advertisements.

New customers who want an ad-free streaming experience will now need to pay $5.50 more without the Basic plan. As noted by Cord Busters, this shift will put more focus on Netflix's ad-supported plan, and it is a move that the company already tested in Canada starting last month.

After saying for years that it had no plans to introduce ads, Netflix debuted an ad-supported tier in late 2022. Netflix opted into ads after losing subscribers for the first time in 10 years in early 2022. That led Netflix to debut a cheaper ad-supported tier and to crack down on multi-household password sharing.

The ad-supported tier shows between four and five minutes of ads per hour, with ads that vary in length from 15 to 30 seconds. Ads play before and during TV shows and movies.

Existing Netflix customers who had already signed up for the $9.99 Basic plan can keep their plans for now, with the change limited to new or rejoining members. Netflix says customers can remain on the Basic plan until they change plans or cancel their accounts.

The $6.99 per month (U.S.) Standard with ads plan offers "all but a few movies and TV shows" and allows customers to watch on two supported devices in full HD, which is 1080p. It does not include offline downloads.

The $15.49 Standard plan includes all TV shows and movies, supports streaming on two devices at a time, and also offers 1080p streaming quality. Content can be downloaded for offline viewing on two supported devices, and there is an option to pay an additional $7.99 to add a person outside the household to the plan.

Netflix's $19.99 per month Premium tier offers support for streaming on four devices at one time (in the same household), and it is the only plan that provides 4K content. Netflix continues to be the only streaming company that charges extra for higher streaming quality.

The Premium plan also includes downloads on six devices, Netflix spatial audio, and the option to add two extra non-household members to a plan for $7.99 per month each.

What a confusing write up, or is it Netflix that has so many different plans, with all the limitations of 2K or 4K.
My favorite is TUBI, free with ads, and I’m finding out I’m watching more and more good movies on TUBI.
on Netflix you can’t even change the color of the subtitles, on TUBI, every time you go back, their suggestions section has new movies to pick from, very refreshing.
while Amazon Prime is full of surprises you have to pay for the movie, not every movie is free on PTV, but has a nice feature X-ray where you can see the name of the actor on the screen with one button.
So Netflix instead of playing around with the “confusing prices”, come up with a good way to find movies in your library to watch, I have to spend more time to decide on a movie, so Netflix, here is your assignment is to make it easy to select a movie to watch from your library.

Netflix proved that throwing money at own branded content making doesn't make good content. They haemorrhaged much good content over the years and the price has gradually climbed in concert with this watering down of their library. They should have put all of their money into buying MGM before Amazon did. Literally decades of great movies on a platter (4,000 titles) along with important franchises such as James Bond, and many TV shows (17,000 eps.). They needed something like that to really boost their repertoire.

do you think the same about apple?

i think netflix mistake was not starting original content way earlier and not being more careful about it like HBO.

Yay! Capitalism wins again!

“We ain’t paying for that actors strike…”
What is with everyone blaming capitalism? Yes there are flaws with it but it’s far superior to communism or socialism which is where our stupid government wants to take us. There are greedy people everywhere and Netflix is majorly greedy.

I cancelled my Netflix after season four of Stranger Things which I liked but also had some major issues with it as some characters had some major plot armor on. I won’t ever renew my Netflix. They suck! 🤣

Funny how consumers feed these greedy corps, then complain the company milks them. America in a nutshell.

Netflix: What a greedy company you have become.

They are, but to be fair, they're no worse than most of the others. Pretty much all of them have jacked prices up a lot over the last couple years. I just cancelled YouTube TV because the $45/mo plan I signed up for a couple years ago just went up to $73/mo.

If you really need to watch content on multiple services but can't stomach the price increases, the best way is to rotate them in an out. Sign up for a month and watch all the content you need, then shut it off for a year. If people were disciplined about this the streamers would actually lose money over keeping prices realistic. But most people aren't disciplined, including myself. I've currently got Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, BritBox, Amazon Prime, and Paramount+. I did just cancel YouTube TV and HBO, so I'm making progress but a long way to go to get costs down. With the Netflix price increases and stupid overcharging for 4K content (which should just be table stakes in 2023), they're probably the next to go.

I've been with Netflix since the dvd by mail days. I have the $20 plan for the 4k and better sound. I have more than enough stuff to watch on there and there's a few shows I can rewatch over and over. And I love the foreign movies that I would never find elsewhere.
