Why give out your credit card number to more companies than you need to.
Apple created the ‘reader’ category of apps so services like Netflix and Spotify didn’t have to offer IAP. IAP only applies to digital so no physical goods or services purchased in an app or on the web use the credit card on file with Apple.

I’ve always paid for Netflix through the App Store subscription. I hope they don’t force me to change this but I have a feeling all streaming subscriptions will end up going this way.

Add this to the growing list of customer unfriendly actions in the works everywhere. When regulators open up NFC the Wallet app will become useless. Every credit card company and every bank will pull out of the Wallet and require its own app to make a payment. Want to pay with your Chase Visa credit card?. You’ll need to use Chase’s app. Want to pay with your bank debit card? You’ll need to use your bank’s app. Want pay with your GM Mastercard? Pay with the GM Mastercard app. The era of one Wallet to keep all your cards in is coming an end. Just like Netflix is doing other streaming platforms will require you visit their website to pay. All this to keep as much profit in their own hands as possible.
This is incredibly alarmist/hyperbolic. What evidence do we have that this is going to happen? I don’t think you can compare Apple Pay to Apple taking 15% of monthly Netflix subscriptions.

Just curious though…do. You think it was “customer unfriendly” for Apple to create the ‘reader’ category of apps that allows Netflix, Spotify, Amazon Kindle, etc. to exist without offering IAP?

Probably only a small problem that there aren't 10 billion people on the planet... but hey who's counting. Lol.

(intended as humor, not making a dig at you.)
Whoopsie. :p
Let’s prey on not really having 10 billion people on the planet At all.

Out of all of the streaming services, Netflix is the one that we keep coming back too. Especially now that other services have started licensing their content through Netflix again.

We got Disney+ as part of our internet package. Which was ideal as we watched it once or twice a month. Now that cable company and Disney appear to be parting ways, Disney wants 75% of what we pay for Netflix, so that's that. Cable company upgraded our download speed to make up the difference.

Just waiting for Paramount+ to put Star Trek: Discovery back where it belongs, on Netflix.

A lot of that content that used to be on Netflix has been retracted to promote the different streaming competitors they have now. Stuff obviously returned to Disney + or Hulu, Paramount+, WB (Max), Britbox (BBC/ITV), Peacock, and so on. It's their content. Obviously there is still stuff licensed from the content sources on a rotational basis that reappears on Netflix every so often. The golden era where Netflix had everything on it is no more.

Netflix was great when it was the primary source of streaming. It lost that title when other services came online and Netflix has failed to replace that with enough content worth taking its customers for granted like it's the only game in town.

I subscribed to Netflix via their website. It works just fine. People purchase things online every second of every day not using Apple’s IAP system with zero problems. Apple needs to stop portraying IAP is being about privacy/security. It’s not. It’s rent seeking. Since Apple exempts so many big names they should change their policy to only take commission on games IAP. I’m sure that’s where they make most of their money anyway. For any other developer who uses IAP just charge them for the credit card processing and any other administrative fees. Surely that would be less than 30% or 15%.
I stopped using Apple App Store for all non-apple streaming services a few years ago. I just didn't see any benefit particularly with sign ons done for various TV manufacturers apps, and other non-Apple devices OS based apps. Additionally some of the subscription deals never were accessible on the Apple App Store. Now in the age of where they are combining various streaming services partnership's with further discounting it even tougher to justify this in the App Store. ;)

Why? Are you Apple Corporation? If not, why do you care about "their refusal to work with the Apple ecosystem"? BTW, is it their refusal or Apple refusal? If Apple dropped 15% fee (for doing nothing), I am pretty sure Netflix would be fine with accepting the payments through the App Store.

Perhaps think about what he said… you seem to not understand at all. Apps working with the Apple TV ecosystem means a lot of features that are useful for users. How is that only useful to Apple? You must not use any of those services.
But the fact that you think Apple does nothing for that 15% shows how little you know about the whole situation to begin with. SMH.

Edit: it’s so amusing that people get ‘angry’ when you point out that just because they don’t find something useful, other people do. So we need your permission to enjoy something. Got it. So funny.

It’s interesting to compare how Netflix and Epic games dealt with the same issue. Epic let their arrogance get in the way of good judgment and a cost a lot of money. Netflix has just been playing the long game and I bet they come out financially ahead in this whole thing.

Absolute fear mongering nonsense holy moly batman when will they stop thinking the world is over

In US, I keep these subscriptions: Netflix, Amazon, Disney and Max (HBO). I am thinking about flipping Disney and Max with Paramount+ and Hulu from time to time.

In US, I keep these subscriptions:

(I canceled Amazon last week. It became not worth it since I can't actually get the two-day shipping I signed up for. Throw ads at me, and I'm gone. I'll watch science content on Youtube, it's easy to block the ads.)

I guess I’m the only one who still has it on. I don’t watch Netflix that much, so when it goes down I’m not going to give them my card. Let them shoot themselves in the foot. 🦶 they should let people have all options for convenience. They can increase the price on in app subscriptions. It’s much easier to manage all my subscriptions in one place. Don’t mind to pay more and have better subscriptions management.

Cancelled last summer and haven’t missed it one bit

I cancelled when they increased the prices. There wasn't any interesting to watch when I still had Netflix so there was no way in hell I was going to pay more money.

You know, I’ve ran out patience with Netflix instead. You know why?

They keep……..

RAISING THEIR PRICES WHILE CHURNING OUT BAD SHOW AFTER ANOTHER, and THEY KEEP CANCELLING HIGH RATED TV SHOW, ALL BECAUSE THEIR ALGORITHM TELL THEM TO DO SO!!!!!!! 😡

So forget that they are part of the App Store cartel that doesn’t know how laws of doing business works and wants to keep all the profit to themselves. They just don’t care about customers, period.

Also seeing what Netflix has done to The Witcher and how they treated Henry Cavill, I'd say screw Netflix.

They are not getting my money.

Whatever. Still want to know why I have to pay for a four user account for my two person family to get 4K and Atmos. This is free through several other services.

Netflix sucks and we are not even tempted to return.

I wouldn’t still be a subscriber if T Mobile wasn’t paying for it. I don’t find any of their original content compelling enough to bother with the service.
Same.

i wonder how many will update their subscriptions and how many will say, “I’m still paying for that?”

That sounds over the top. Assuming the Wallet (doubtfully ever) goes away, why wouldn’t people just tap their physical cc?

Apple has only itself to blame.

turns out you can't continue stealing from developers forever.
Correction: You can't keep nickel and diming your users forever.

Apple should be banned from doing the "You have to give app store users the same price as non-app store users" term in their contract, because then the consequences of their nickel and diming would be made apparent when a subscription is $10 through the website and $13 through the app store.

Its completely over the top. look at google pay, which has far more competition due to android allowing users to use whatever wallet they want. Still supported by card providers even though they could make their own exclusive app.
