I've had it running all day and my iphone is asleep, I swear. I will say though that I do have an exchange server account setup with my email being pushed.
I am giving up. I have done everything and I cannot get to the net with my mac. I think there is something wrong with my iphone or maybe my copy of netshare. I can ping the phone from the mac. I have restored my phone. I can't think of what else to do.

Have you tried leaving port 1080 out of the Socks proxie setup on your Mac?
For some reason, if I put in port 1080 there (on the Mac) my NetShare will not function. I noticed this was left out of the original How To (which is what I followed -- Go to the first page of this thread, and look at Step 3) but NetShare's own directions say to include port 1080 when configuring your Mac.

This does require that your phone be jailbroken.
you can jailbreak your 3g with PwngeTool

Is it not possible to get Mail working with NetShare?
one of the downsides of however this is setup in general is that -ALL- programs that would need to use the connection, would have to have its proxy settings changed... if you have your web browser setup and working, you could always just use a site that checks your email for you, such as http://www.mail2web.com
otherwise, set up the same proxy settings for your mail program as you have your web browser.
Is it not possible to get Mail working with NetShare?
I get Hotmail and Mobileme mail in Safari using Netshare with no problems. Firefox does not work for me however.
So, here is what I did:
1.) I already bought Netshare when it reappeared on the App Store that second time. So, this is the assumption, that you have it on the iPhone already.
2.) view these instructions and follow them exactly, all the way to the "Last but not least, the computer side proxy" section. The Firefox instructions did not work for me, and as mentioned, didn't want to hassle with an app that I'd eventually have to pay for. So, although I use Firefox 24/7, I can deal with using Safari for when I need to use Netshare. And it's actually not a bad browser at all! Guess I am just used to Firefox for so long.

3.) Download Safari if you don't already have it on your PC. Keep in mind that once we change a setting in Safari, it will NOT work on your normal Wifi connection at home. But again, I am ONLY using Safari for this specific "niche" situation of tethering to the iPhone.
4.) Launch Safari and got to Edit... Preferences. Click on the Advanced icon. At the bottom of the window, click the "Proxies: Change Settings..." button.
5.) The Internet Properties window should pop up, and the "Connections" tab should be the one highlighted. If not, highlight this one. Ignore everything in this window (everything should be blank) and click the "LAN settings" button at the bottom.
6.) The top two checkboxes should be blank, and check the Proxy Server check box (ONLY the one that says "Use a proxy server....") Leave the "Bypass..." one unchecked. Click the Advanced button in the bottom-right.
7.) The 4th textbox down is the "Socks"... put in the IP address of your iPhone, and put 1080 as the port. I left the checkbox under this unchecked. Click OK. Click OK. Click OK. This should get you out of all the windows. Now shut down Safari.
Once you have done this, I first made sure I connected to my Adhoc "NETSHARE" network in Vista. I WAITED (this may be one big key!!!) for it to get past the "Identifying...." part on the Network map. Then, I go on the iPhone and select the NETSHARE network. I make sure the iPhone is saying 3G or EDGE. I then start up the Netshare app, and it should show the IP address. Last, load Safari, and it SHOULD start putting showing stuff on the iPhone as data transferring in and out.
I went on to Speakeasy.net and did their Speed Test, and got 1100Kbps, which I was pretty happy with!!!
Good luck all, I hope this helps some of you who were stuck like me, to finally get to use this!!

This has probably already been said but I will say it again because I had to re-figure out what I was doing wrong.
Yes Netshare had 192.168.10.1 in the Proxy IP settings slot; indeed all settings were correct and yet I could not connect.
What was wrong with this picture is that where there should be a 3G icon next to the AT&T in the upper left corner there was a WIFI icon. The way I got the 3G icon was I simply got on the internet via iPhone Safari. Once I this happened I reactivated Netshare. Everything worked from then on perfectly.
You MUST have the 3G icon for Netshare to work.

What type of mac r u using?
Just uploaded the new 2.0.2 firmware. Netshare still works but I of course lost my jailbreak and that pineapple bootup logo. I did this realizing the only thing I had to lose from the jailbreak was the Winterboard themes and the Terminal tethering hack, which I can do without as long as Netshare works. So far I haven't noticed too much wrong. I did not restore from back up but set it up as a new iPhone due to a fear it might try to upload some of my jailbreak apps.
By the way I'm posting this from a Macbook Pro which is tethered wirelessly to my iPhone 3G.
Edit: Dang; I lost Flixwagon too, which let me stream video to the net from iPhone 3G.
This is not working for me... any other suggestions? It is working fine in Safari... so I know the connection works. However, after entering in my info into Firefox 3.0.1, every time I try and go to a website, it simply spits back an empty file: "_PoYjel1.dms.part" and it is apparently designated as unidentified binary text....
Thoughts/Suggestions?

You just solved my problem for me. Thanks for that.
Just wanted to let you guys know I resolved my problem of not being able to connect by removing two extra ethernet connections that were set up by Parallels or VMWare fusion. For some reason Safari was trying to go through them rather then Airport directly.
