For those who still can't get it to work in Tiger when you goe to Proxy on your MBP t may look fine until you put a check mark in one of the settings above it like FTP Proxy and click APPLY NOW. You may notice your Socks Proxy has changed to a different number like it hasn't been set at all! If this happens correct the Socks Proxy number and APPLY, then uncheck the FTP Proxy and APPLY. Now if you double check you will notice even though you check the FTP Proxy again and APPLY the Sock Proxy does not change. This is obviously a bug in OS 10.4.11

Safari may STILL not work until you go into Firefox Preferences/Network/Settings and choose Manual Proxy Configuration and put in 192.168.10.1 for your Socks Host settings as well as the 1080 number in the slot to the right of those settings.

Good Luck:D

On torrent sites..

Though I hate to resort to piracy... I can confirm that Netshare has been cracked and is available on major torrent sites.

I tethered and played some World of Warcraft last night.. was holding a ping of around 280ms for most of it.. sometimes would get up to 350ms or so..

In the end, a VERY playable WoW experience.. I wouldn't dare try anything UDP based (all FPS games) over 3G.. Although I don't think you'd be able to run anything UDP based via tethering anyways, since the tethering app is a socks TCP only type connection. They would have to implement some kind of UDP over TCP type system on the iPhone side for it to work.

AT&T seems to allow any type of data to transmit via 3G/Edge.. so this is good news.. UDP does work over 3g (try a VoIP program).

Edit: Speakeasy speed test showed I was peaking out at 890kbit downstream and a 200kbit upstream.. This tells me AT&T is probably capping their end as multiple tests showed nearly the same exact results. And we know that HSDPA theoretically goes up to 3.6mbit which is equal to 3600kbit.. 890kbit < 3600kbit.. there's TONS of speed to be had yet... Hopefully AT&T throttles it up a little more for us.

hopefully they're able to reach an agreement and get the App back up there. I was able to d/l it, but the fear that Apple could at anytime release a "software update" that breaks the App is always an option, especially if an agreement can't be met...

SocksCap is quite an old program, but it's free and it still works well. I haven't tested it with NetShare, but I don't see why it wouldn't work just the same. Understand that it's not going to be as easy as Proxifier.

UPDATE: Just tested out the download link and it doesn't work. The company that provided it no longer does, but you can download it here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/tszny9

I was looking for an alternative to the mac version of proxifier :). Two have been posted, but they are both for Windows only

Most likely AT&T only supports 1.2 Mbit which is the most common. They need to upgrade stations to get 3.6 Mbit. American ISPs and Cell Providers are never that quick really tbh. We in Sweden got 3.6 Mbit in most places, and in the bigger cities around 7.2 Mbit. But they are working on doubeling everything, so 3.6 becomes 7.2 and 7.2 becomes 14.4 :) That will rock :p

Dunno bout that. I'm getting this on my 3G iPhone:
photo-6.jpg

And the Jailbreak speed using Terminal goes sometimes over that.
As I've said before the Netshare speed is half the jailbreak speed, which is in line with what you all are getting, around 800 to 900 Kbps.

That site has 0 accuracy. It fluctuates way too much. And a test with my laptop shows 8-12 Mbit depending on which try u wanna count. When in fact my laptop should be getting around 35 Mbit as it does with real tests. I wouldn't trust that site for one second ;)

for those having trouble w/ proxifier and xp, make sure under options->name resolution you uncheck "choose the mode automatically" and select "Try locally then remotely"..that fixed it for me

another recommendation is to launch a website on safari on the iphone before launching netshare

here are my speed results while using netshare on my laptop

Here is the Speakeasy speed test comparison:

Terminal Hack in Kbps:
1838, 1844, 1791
AVERAGE= 1824

Netshare in Kbps:
1095, 1104, 1076
Average = 1091

Here is another trial:

Terminal Hack in Kbps:
1417, 1632, 1630
AVERAGE = 1559

Netshare:
1057, 1066, 1044
AVERAGE = 1055

Another trial:

Terminal Hack:
1914, 1752, 1994
AVERAGE = 1886

Netshare:
1094, 1103, 1069
AVERAGE = 1088

COMBINED AVERAGES OF NETSHARE = 1078
COMBINED AVERAGES OF TERMINAL = 1756

So Terminal seems to be over 1.6 times faster.
Since the readings were pretty consistant I would regard Speakeasy a pretty reliable barometer.

Another critical difference between Netshare and Terminal:
You ever have Firefox ask to download files instead of downloading web pages as it should? It still happens to me in Netshare but not with Terminal. So don't pull your hair out any longer wondering what you did wrong; I believe it is a Netshare issue when Firefox does this; not something you forgot to do.

Another difference is you have to get out of Netshare to use functions on your iPhone; not so with Terminal; you can even browse the net on your iPhone while a friend browses on your tethered laptop simultaneously.

But as I've said before certain webpage buttons do not download fully in Terminal, but they still seem to function.

Another critical difference; Netshare seems to not have any trouble getting into Hotmail or Mobileme mail in Safari but Terminal cannot access either in Safari.

things i've noticed:

1. if you get a call while connected you get booted off and have to "reprime the pump" by getting on the edge/3g network with iphone safari before reconnecting.
edit: this doesn't happen every time, i guess. i got a couple calls while i was just tethering and they went straight to voicemail and the outgoing message said something about "temporarily being out of service" or something like that.

2. some have said that the battery will drain even if your phone is plugged in, but i haven't noticed this to be the case.

3. itunes connects automatically.

what i'm wondering:

1. is there a free (or cheaper) mac alternative to proxifier to just route all traffic to the right place?

2. can somebody help me setup firefox? so far i've gotten to,
preferences -> advanced -> network ->settings but i'm not sure what to do next.

manual proxy config, socks host, then the IP from network setup?

3. i can't figure out how to save a network setup, and have to manually enter the IP and stuff every time. shouldn't i just be able to save and just switch back and forth between my tethering network and my home or other wifi?

I don't know if any one has said this yet because I didn't read the entire 11 pages but apple could have pulled the app due to the fact there is already a product from Sony called the netshare cam or something perhaps there's some sort of copy right or trademark infringement issues going on

RockinRocker in settings select Manual Proxy configuration and in SOCKS Host enter 192.168.10.1 and to the right in the Port slot enter 1080

Next in firefox where you would put web addresses enter about:config

Filter: socks

Double click on network.proxy.socks_remote_dns to make the false reading true

That's it. Be warned that I when I try to browse even after doing all of this I get a window that says:

You have chosen to open a Binary File from xxxxxx.com
which is why I use Safari with Netshare.

Check Safari/Preferences go into Proxies: Change settings make sure Proxy is set at 192.168.10.1 with 1080 in slot at right.
Check FTP Proxy, enter same numbrs and apply.
Uncheck FTP Proxy
Check Socks Proxy to see if number has not changed; if it did correct it and APPLY.

NOTE IN THIS WINDOW YOU SHOULD HAVE ON TOP:
a location of your own like iPhone Tether

Click on TCP/IP and make sure you are using:
Using DHCP with manual address
IP Address: 192.168.10.2

Also note if you have a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0 you should have
192.168.10.1 (Static setting) with same Subnet Mask number of
255.255.255.0

Nope didn't work I am thinking my netshare software is corrupt, is there anyway without jailbreaking that I can get the app reinstalled from a fresh source?

Has anyone gotten proxifier to work on the mac? I have tried with version 1.1.0, but haven't had any luck getting my mail, entourage, or ftp to route through it. Any help would be appreciated.

I have been trying to get proxifier to work for a few days. I have actually emailed tech support and they haven't been able to figure out why it wasn't working.. If several people email them about the issue I am sure they will be encouraged to solve the issue!

If you guys want mail and other apps to work properly the only way is for a piece of software to manage the socks proxy, otherwise you have to modify how each application connects and that's just ridiculous unless you are always connected by tethering....

If I find a decent and cheap program I'll post it but socks isn't too popular with the average computer user so there aren't a whole lot of options out there to chose from currently. Last time I fooled around with socks was when I was on dial-up and leaching off of my highschools dialup server :D
