I think this app is available outside the US, which was probably the original intention. When I click on the app, it now says:

"The item you've requested is not currently available in the US store."

Hopw do you make iTunes think you are from another country?

I looked at a lot of the different countries itunes store and all of them didnt have it.

Can't believe i missed this app  How likely is it that it comes back onto the App store? Or that an alternative is made, or is there anyway to still get this app? I could have really done with an app like NetShare..

STUPID QUESTION:
Would it be possible for an enterprising developer to write an app that tethers 3G to a laptop (i.e. an open source recreation of NetShare) and instead of putting it on the App Store, just distribute the source code as tarball for people to compile and load onto their iPhones (at least those with Apple dev accounts)?

Surely the mere distribution of Obj-C code is not illegal or breaking any EULA?

This struck me as a very sensible question which got forgotten because it was the last post before Netshare reappeared on Aug. 1. What about it? Could a person write and share the code leaving individuals to figure out how to get it onto the phone? For some, the $99 to become an apple developer would be a small price to pay for this functionality. I believe Apple Developers can compile program code to "test" on their iPhone.

I wrote a guide to do this for free if your iPhone is jailbroken (see my sig)

And no, distributing NetShare code technically violates the NDA (Non-disclosure agreement) set forth by Apple. Developers are not allowed to share their code yet

I have 3G iPhone with 2.01. I followed the directions, carefully. I can, seemingly, ping the iPhone, but in the Netshare app, I noticed 0 connections and the connection speed meter was 0. I established a Safari page to test the 3G connection. But my Mac is not going to the net. Does iPhone firmware 2.01 make a difference? That is what I am on, currently. I have tried a lot of the advice posted here, but no go. It seems that Netshare is not bridging between the 3G network and my wifi network. Thanks.

I just tested my Netshare connection and was able to get right at 1.2 Mbps. Not to shabby. Remember to make sure you setup all the steps correctly. Unfortunately Firefox 3 is not liking the Socks setup...

For all those, like myself, who are kicking themselves for missing Netshare just jailbreak 2.0.1 via Pwnage and install it manually. Really is rather simple.

It doesn't work at all for me. I've been at this all day. Can't open Safari.

I assume you have the app up and running. Are you marking sure the socks proxy is one below the IP?

IP 192.168.10.2

Socks 192.168.10.1 port 1080.

You are making the adhoc network and joining it with the iphone right? Then on the iphone when you join the network made on the mac you are inputting the socks IP 192.168.10.1 exiting the settings and starting Netshare again? If you have done everything correctly when you start Netshare it will show the socks IP at the top at proxy IP. If you are not getting this it will not work. Something is not configured right. The program does work just takes time and finagling. It is a pain in the butt but once you figure it out it should be cake from then on.

I have everything as per the instruct except next to the number on the proxies page, I have 1080 and a subnet mask of 255 etc. Same as on the phone.

I still show the Wifi logo on the phone. But I can't figure out what I did wrong to where I can't pull up a safari page.

I'm not yet sure how to ping. Have to look that up. This is really driving me nutso.

OK - I can ping it. 64 bytes

Anyone have a clue why I can't connect then? Email & Safari are dead in the water. I'm not seeing any firewall installed, etc.

If pinging works then the your mac is talking to the iphone through the tether network you set up. Your problem seems the same as mine. My iphone goes out to the web through 3G, but this is not being passed to your mac. The problem, to me, seems to be in Netshare. I am not using any jailbreaking, but the app I downloaded from the store. Before trying Netshare, I upgraded to firmware 2.01 So, I am wondering if 2.01 broke Netshare. It seems the only thing, that I can think of that could be the problem.

Try deleting the subnet and all other info such as router. Just enter the static IP for both Mac & iPhone. Start Safari on the phone and go to a page. Icon should go to 3G but it will still be connected to the adhoc. Start Netshare and see if it shows your proxy IP. It does work on 2.0.1 because I just used it.

Not working. I have an Airport Extreme and am trying to tether an Air.
My network settings show an Airport "connected" and Bluetooth NOT connected. All my numbers seem accurate to all instructions.

I'm going to reboot the computer and cross my fingers. Other than that, I'm lost.

OK - rebooted and got a message "none of your networks are available" and listed my "Home" wifi network, and "Tether". I selected Tether.
Nothing works. Hmmm.... Maybe my hubby's windows laptop will work with it magically, which is who I'm really doing this for.

I pinged the 192.168.10.2 number successfully but the 192.168.10.1 fails.

Thanks guys for your help. But IDK...

Pinging 192.168.11.2 will be pinging your computer, which should work. Pinging 192.168.11.1 is pinging the iPhone, your "server". If it works, you are connected to the iPhone.

I can ping my phone, but everything I do, yields no net.

Mine seemed to constantly swap back to my original network settings for my Airport. I finally got it to work when I set up a new location called Tether. I also ripped out all of the Ethernet on that setting which for some reason were showing up as the main active connection.

I still cannot get FF working though. Even with the SOCKS change listed. Bummer because everything is configured there on my system.

Well I guess if proxifier works, I'll be shelling out the 40 bucks for it then. I can't find a single free alternative for the mac.

I got it to work (tho' no clue why). Problem is getting the laptop back on my wifi home network. Had to change all the settings manually. Then going back to tether is the same as setting it up from scratch. PITA. I'll be looking to learn how to set this up so it's easy to switch back/forth.

EDIT: I figured that out. In my mac, I now only have to change the "Location" to Tether in System Pref and the Network Name. Anyone know how to be able to toggle in/out of the networks just by going to the upper right bar on a mac?

@SilentLoner

Re "...The error was: “unknown error” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1)..."

I hade the exact same problem but (...finally...) tried the trick from here which suggests "...So, right before the final step of launching NetShare on the iphone (i.e. after setting up the adHoc network on the iphone to your PC), launch Safari on the iPhone and surf to a page. This will cause the little WiFi icon to change to 3G at the top of your phone. Now lanuch NetShare that you have the 3G icon back and everything will work like a dream...."
And it DID!!! Not optional but finally got it working :)

I am giving up. I have done everything and I cannot get to the net with my mac. I think there is something wrong with my iphone or maybe my copy of netshare. I can ping the phone from the mac. I have restored my phone. I can't think of what else to do.

Tried this. As I said, the mac sees the iphone through the ad hoc network created for the tether (I can ping the iphone). The iphone sees the net through the 3G network. Netshare does not seem to be bridging these 2 networks. Very frustrated!

It works!

I bought this the second time it was up on the App store and am so glad I grabbed it as soon as it appeared that second time.

Well, I finally bothered to take 10 minutes today to follow the directions and see if I could get this to work.

It did!

I like having it as an "emergency" backup tool.

Very cool!

-You will also notice that when your iPhone goes to sleep or you exit the netshare application it will quit and your mac will have no internet access via your iPhone.

Netshare is working this very moment on my original iphone and it is currently asleep...so I am not sure this step is necessarily true. Just my two cents.
