If you find a 6th gen on sale, it’s probably a better buy. Pair with a third party keyboard (many are better than Apple’s). Not sure what the big deal with smart connector. I have BT and it works just fine.

Of course the older version will be cheaper. I don't think anyone is shocked about this. I've never used Apple's Smart Keyboard because I don't have a newer iPad but I have used a Logitech BT keyboard folio a while ago and found it to be a PITA. I would have to manually power it on every time I wanted to use it then if I wanted to use the on screen keyboard I would have to power it off. I ended up just taking it off and using another case. I'm not sure if the Apple Smart Keyboard is any different though.

The processor is in relation to the price and more than powerful enough for the intended user. If it's not powerful enough specifically for you then the iPad Pro is available. That's why they make more than one model.
It's a cash grab, no matter how you try and spin it. This is the same company that released the 6+ with 1gb of ram. Stingy as it gets.

The Apple Smart Keyboard is much lighter than the Bluetooth competition because it has no battery, and because it has no back case, since it just snaps into place purely by magnets. That also allows you to instantly remove the keyboard for handheld usage, with no fuss. Also, it doesn't require charging, and it's less hassle since there is no pairing involved at all. Another factor is that they are full-sized at 18 mm for the 10.2" iPad, 10.5" Air, 10.5" Pro, and 11" Pro. They are full-sized at 19 mm for the 12.9" Pros. Check out my key spacing thread here:

These Apple Smart Keyboards are excellent. My main beef with them is that they are not backlit (yet).

In retrospect, I suspect it may be true it's 1st generation Touch ID in the new 10.2" iPad, judging by this table:

View attachment 857154

I figured they'd all be 2nd gen by now, considering 2nd gen began with the iPhone 6s, but the iPad 2017 and iPad 2018 both are 1st gen. Lame. It's too bad because 2nd gen Touch ID is noticeably better than 1st gen.

I guess the good news is the A10 in my iPhone 7 Plus (3 GB RAM) and the A10X in my iPad Pro 10.5 (4 GB RAM) are probably going to be supported longer than I might have originally guessed. Same goes for my A10X Apple TV 4K (3 GB RAM). BTW, I just bought the iPad Pro 10.5 and Apple TV 4K a few months ago, and they are both quite speedy. My iPhone 7 Plus is fine, but the performance is not the same as the A10X iPad Pro 10.5. I'm good to keep the 7 Plus until 2020, but then I'll probably either sell it or else pass it down to a family member.

Below are the relative Geekbench 5 scores of the various iOS devices. CPU score of A10 is around 1400 multi-core, which is OK. Hopefully this iPad comes with 3 GB RAM like my 7 Plus, because 2 GB RAM in my iPad Air 2 these days = tab refreshes more than I'd like.

Metal appears decent at around 2800, which is probably one reason it was chosen as the cutoff. Below the A9, Metal performance falls off a cliff.

The A10X on par with the A11 is embarrassing

Same for the A8X to the A9 (and almost beats the A10 in the touch 7G)

Why is that embarrassing?

A8X is triple-core, and so is A10X. (Well, technically A10X is hex-core, but it functions like triple-core.)

You mean the 6 that still works perfectly in 2019? I know Apple specs confuse the Android crowd but it's a different system. These posts remind me of the old XR "buuuuut it's not 1080P" comments LOL

They’re also $219 CDN. That’s half the price of the iPad itself.
IMO, going BT is the better buy.

I was going to pull the trigger on this iPad until I saw the A10 CPU and 32GB of base storage. Pathetic.
I know right... It would be awesome if Apple would just release the iPad Pro with a TB of storage as the regular iPad for $329. I would buy it

If it works for you then that's awesome. You can get BT keyboards for around 50 USD (I don't know the CDN conversion) and sometimes cheaper. It's like you can use a regular stylus for less than $10 or pay for the Apple Pencil for almost $100. If cheaper is working for the user then why not go that route.

I bought this Apple Smart Keyboard on Amazon.ca for CAD$149.99 months ago from a third party, but fulfilled by Amazon. However, I see now they are now about $169. They’re actually new sealed in box (and I can confirm mine was new) but for some reason the listing states “renewed” now even though all the sellers list it as new.

I suspect because these are third parties and one seller tried to pass off an open box one as new.

This answer pretty much btfo the entire thread. Its true, the reg ipad is just that, a regular cheap ipad for basic task, using basic components. If your looking to do more with your ipad or want better specs/camera, the pros fill that void.

Its not hard to figure out guys.

The 6 and 6+ are not perfect. They are usable for sure, but Apple gimped them from the start. I didn't bring up the XR or Android.

It's interesting that the 10.2" iPad is just put into a thicker 10.5" iPad Air/Pro shell, with bigger bezels and heavier weight.

The nicest one out of the bunch here is still the 10.5" Pro. If you're in the US, I'd still strongly recommend you consider the 10.5" Pro 64 GB refurb for $469 if your budget isn't tight.

For that extra $140 you get:

32 GB more storage
Much faster CPU
Much, much faster GPU
Thinner design and lighter weight
Bigger, brighter, and much nicer laminated screen with WCG, True Tone, 120 Hz ProMotion, anti-reflective coating
Quad speakers
USB 3 speed for external USB
Much better camera, with optical image stabilization, and wide colour gamut image capture
Camera flash / flashlight
4K video recording for rear camera
1080p120 and 720p240 slow motion video recording for rear camera
1080p video recording for front camera
Touch ID 2

I didn't say you brought up anything. What I said was "These posts remind me of the old XR "buuuuut it's not 1080P" comments LOL". The phone wasn't "gimped" when it came out. It was sufficient memory for iOS to work fine. In fact it runs quite well on iOS 12 and not just "usable". It was released in 2014 so obviously not anywhere near the performance of a phone made in 2019 but it was comparable to in performance to phones made then.

I guess what I’m struggling to understand is why this iPad even exists. The changes it offers over the 6th gen are very minor to me. I understand the base model isn’t going to have top tier specs, but this just seems redundant at this point.

I think it's a pretty big advance over the 6th generation. Maybe not what some of us wanted, but still a noticeable improvement. Not only is it a bigger screen, it has Smart Keyboard support, which to me is a big deal.

That said, if you are not on a tight budget and want the Smart Keyboard, it may make more sense to spend $469 to get a 64" iPad Pro 10.5, which is way better.

It's a minor update. They put a larger screen and a smart connector so it's compatible with the Apple keyboard. The older one was still selling very well and this is just a minor refresh. They're not going to put an A12 and laminated display because then it would be an iPad Air. You say you understand the base model isn't going to have top tier specs but I don't think you're getting it. It's not going to have midrange specs AKA iPad Air either. It's going to have BASE specs with a BASE price. It's for a kid, teenager, or an adult that just wants a basic iPad. If you're looking for better they have those options available.

I think the minor update of the 7th gen isn't that bad, but only if the RAM is 3GB. 2GB of the 6th gen will be tight with the new iPadOS.

I took the chance and bought mine off of eBay for $68 back in April and it’s barely used and works perfectly. I could buy another for the same price and still be ahead, haha. If whomever wants it really cheap, could do it that way, although eBay can be a gamble.

I was going to suggest this iPad to family for a cheaper, yet capable device for their mobile games until I saw it was an A10, meh. In terms of speed the A10X is perfect for me, keeps up with everything I throw at it. I’m sure the A10 isn’t terrible, but I’m not going to suggest something more out dated than mine as I know it wouldn’t be as good as experience.

[doublepost=1568164320][/doublepost]I had a question on using as a temporary replacement for my MacBook Air 2018. When my 11 year old comes over and wants to play games I give him the MacBook Air and I use my 2010 MacBook Pro which is still sort of fast with SSD.

I was looking to get the new iPad and trade in my iPad Air 2 and then get the keyboard so I use the iPad 7th gen as a computer since 2010 MBP is not on current OS.

Would you do that or just save up and get another MacBook Air? Trying to save money but I hold my Apple products a long time so cost after 4-5 years blends away. Please advise

Buy your kid a 6th gen Ipad on discount (assuming the games he/she wants are on it) and keep using what you currently have.

Edit: the iPad Pro had an A9X, now I REALLY don’t know what you guys are complaining about. That’s less than half the price of an absolute monster from just 4 years ago.

I really hope this sentence was written with some uber top-notch sarcasm skill.
