I returned a 16" for what I considered to be a speaker rattle from foreign material. Posted my experience back in December. One respondent took his to an Apple Store and found a small rock in his unit.

I would have a difficult time believing that all of the complaints are from foreign material. Maybe mine was the crackling/popping described in this thread.

I am due to receive a new 16" on February 15. Not quite sure what I will do if the sparkers on this one unit "rattle", "pop", or "crackle". Forty-five hundred dollars US is a lot to spend with this defect.

Talked to Apple Senior Advisor, suggested to rule out Hardware issue and bring to store. im in Bali, I bought it in Germany and that will take some time. I begged her to pass this on but she honestly speaking didn't seem very competent. Asked me to go sound settings and asked me if the Mute button was checked. and if the controls (balance) are centered.

Any of you have some news?

It's this long term macOS/Logic Pro/Core audio glitching, popping, spiking rubbish that Apple refuse to acknowledge. It's very very frustrating. They act like they have never heard about it when you call support but there are reports of it literally everywhere. It's been running back years now. Terrible on Apples part considering these are marketing as pro audio machines.

Yeah, it is really horrible with Logic Pro. I can confirm this.

Received my new 16" on the 8th instead of the 15th.

Only time I have picked up any crackling/popping was in DaVinci Resolve when timeline and clip were set-up to play at 23.976 FPS but playback rate was set to 29.78 FPS--not sure how that happened. However, when I set the playback rate to 23.976 FPS all the popping/cracking went away.

Hope that this holds.

Just found this thread!

Also have a short crackle or pop. Mostly just one or two, and always when first starting playing audio. Then there can be minutes or even hours between them.

Will report it to Apple now just for the sake of it, hoping it can be fixed with a software update so I'll hold of replacing it for now.

I guess this is related to some kind of sample rate mismatch given that it only happens on certain sources? Weird that it doesn't happen with headphones though, maybe that routes through something else in CoreAudio?

Just wanted to provide an update on my particular situation --

I'm not sure if anyone else experiencing this issue had MS Teams installed - but I did, and, after a weird suspicion that maybe my speaker popping/crackling could be related to it, I completed uninstalled it.

So far, it seems to have resolved my issue. I'll continue monitoring, but, I've already gone much longer than normal before I hear the crackling/popping while playing any kind of audio.

I happened to be running a version of MS Teams that installed a Core Audio driver. I happened to be using a preview version of MS Teams, which enabled the option to share my Computer Audio during a meeting. Uninstalling MS Teams doesn't remove this driver, so you need to do it manually (via these instructions I found):

1. Open Finder
2. Use the menu “Go” -> “Go to folder…” (or press Shift + Command + G)
3. Copy the following path: /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL
4. Click “Go”
5. Delete the audio driver. You will need to enter the administrator password or use your touch id.
6. Restart your computer. After it, the driver will disappear from your system sound preferences.

One thing I noticed was that the Core Audio Driver was showing as "Intel" in the Activity Monitor. Perhaps that was a contributing factor? The only other two Core Audio Drivers that I have running are for Zoom and Telestream's ScreenFlow, and both show as "Apple" under "Kind".

Perhaps the common factor here could be rogue Core Audio Drivers, possibly running in emulation?

Will continue to monitor for the rest of the day and post back if the fix seems permanent.

UPDATE: This seems to have had some effect, but I do still experience the popping. So this wasn't the end-all be-all I was hoping it would be. Hopefully the upcomiing 12.2 Monterey update will address this.
I don't have HAL folder

Interesting. I, on the other hand, have a speaker issue as well, but mine is different. At lower volumes, 1-2 clicks of volume, when playing anything (on chrome, spotify, apple music, safari etc), it will make this weird hard-drive esc noise. Not sure how well you can pick it up in the video but its noticeable in a quiet room, and I've tried everything above, hopefully this and your issues are fixed.

Are you still having this issue? I've had my MBP for a couple of months now and it's started making the exact same noise.

I also have the issue since beginning. Watching Apple TV series is horrible. Each time when the Apple TV logo appears at the start, I have the feeling that my MacBooks explodes.
Also at low volume, sounds like there is thunder.

is it always the same time of a song or video? if so, this seems more like the speakers are broken. The popping issue for me rather seems infrequent, not specific to high or low frequencies.

Please check my recordings.

Yes ist sounds different than your recordings. Yes it appears each time the Apple TV logo appears in the movies.
I contacted apple support and will send the MacBook to Apple. Lets see if they can replicate the problem of if they say that it is a software bug.

Had this same issue on 2 different 16" 2019 MBP and now a 16" 2021 M1 Pro. As @fpenta pointed out, it seems to be correlate with CPU usage.
Meaning non fixable????? Damn .... so you guys having same issues? I don't do massive tasks at all, I use capture one, Spotify, Safari or Chrome, Firefox.. Reducing Midi to 44khz don't do anything to solve it.

I will return mine tomorrow. It happens to me when there is a high cpu load when using photoshop. I tested it with Spotify, Tidal and Apple Music. Same problem. I can replicate it every time within 5/10 min.
Many people have replaced theirs but still get the same problem. Not sure what to do

I'm simply resizing a 5GB psb image with multiple layers from 7000x7000 to 30000 x 30000 pixels. Takes like 5 minutes but pushes the cpu pretty hard. Now trying if it does the same with AirPods connected or is just an internal speaker problem.

Update: Yes it does the same problem also with AirPods connected. That's pretty bad...I guess this means is not a hardware related problem but some sort of software optimization ?

could but maybe also a shielding issue inside laptop? hardware issue .. that would be WORSE. What software version are you on? 12.2.1 ????

I was just with support when I realised, damn... I haven't updated now most likely I need to test all again..
