Shiiiit, I think I blew up my subwoofers. Was playing music at full volume and heard a pop and now there's definitely less bass. Did a restart and it's still like this

Had the same issue and the following steps fixed it:
  1. (Menu Bar): Go > Computer > Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > Audio
  2. Delete the com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist and com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist files
  3. Empty trash
  4. Restart

I am having the exact same problem in my M1 Pro 14-inch 2021!! It happens with Youtube, Spotify (chrome and app), etc. I changed the midi settings and does not solve the problem permanently.

Yes, I've noticed this recently too... It used to happen on my 2019 MBP16" and now it is back on the 2021 M1Max16".

Glad it is not just me! And they should fix it, like in 2019/2020 provided someone has let Apple know...

After doing this I've been ok for the last 2 days. I hope it will last.

After thinking I was on to something related to Parallels, because it happened 100% of the time when I would run a VM, it proved to be an issue again regardless. It's been discussed that it may be due to high processing which I agree with. For anyone doing these steps of deleting the plist files or rebooting, it is all temporary! The other hope about macOS 12.3 fixing it is bleak. I installed the beta hoping that it would include a fix but it doesn't thus far with Beta 5 that dropped this week. I would like to hear from anyone who recently got a new computer to report if it has started. It may take a few days but when it starts, it doesn't want to!

EDIT: Spoke too soon. It worked for about 30 minutes...
EDIT2: It seems to vary based on the source. I had no popping in MS Teams (which definitely puts the computer under load), but Spotify does have popping.

I have this annoying popping sound and it happens very frequently after having my 16" M1 pro MBP running for 4+ hours with Ram usage around 80%. One thing that I noticed is that the crackling sound happens on the internal speaker, but when connecting an external speaker or headphone it still happens but in a different form (the sound stops for milliseconds). I think this might be frequent short CPU hangs, not a software issue.

I've searched everywhere for a solution and nothing seems to work, and apple support wasn't helpful as well. Would a replacement fix the issue, or is it a universal issue?

Software may cause CPU hangs. In any case, if you read the thread you won't see much evidence that a replacement will be better.

This is exactly what it is, the CPU briefly overwhelmed and cutting audio out. I can replicate this in Ableton easily by taxing a channel with plug-ins and using a low buffer latency. For some reason when it happens using the built-in MacBook Pro speakers it sounds 10 times more terrible then when audio briefly cuts out on headphones or an external speaker. Same thing happened on my old 16" Intel MacBook Pro as well. Maybe it has something to do with the force-cancelling woofers.

It's a universal issue and it's been around a while, I wouldn't hold my breath for a solution.

My last post spoke about the same results with 12.3 Beta 5. Yesterday 12.3 RC was released and while the pops and crackles are still present, it's actually better. It happens but not as consistent or frequently. And this is taxing the CPU with two VM's, multiple browsers opened and rendering a video with Handbrake. I don't expect that it will be fixed and for anyone thinking that a replacement will help, it won't! Whenever I speak to anyone at Apple (phone support of Genius Bar), they are all saying they never heard this reported before! How is this possible because this is HUGE issue. They marketed how great these speakers are and the built in DAC as a main feature.

Let's hope for more improvements between this weeks RC release and next weeks production. Don't hold your breath but please let's make some noise to Apple!

That is what they always say when there is an issue "oh wow we've never seen that before", "we haven't seen this issue", are they blatantly trained to lie lol? /Halfjoke

Look guys, this issue was present on the 2019 16" MBPs and it was fixed then. It will be fixed again. So, all the postulating and theory is a waste of time. Apple will be aware of it, regardless. And it will be addressed.

It was never fixed in the 2019 16" MBP.

These items are pretty expensive for people to take risks on and just assume it will get fixed, it's perfectly reasonable for people to be upset/concerned. It should have been fixed already.

I've got both the 2019 and a 2021 16". It was fixed on the 2019 generation. And I wouldn't exactly say you are taking a risk. If you are not happy contact Apple and exercise your consumer rights.

Has anyone had success remediating this? I have a MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021) with an M1 Pro running 12.2.1 (21D62) and this is DRIVING ME INSANE!! Just when I think I have fixed it, I get this ridiculous popping while listening to any audio whether it be music, Zoom call, or playing something in Safari. This is maddening for a $3K computer. Tried the several suggestions of shutting down, erasing without a restore, isolating the user account etc. I have to think its OS/software related but any tips that have permanently resolved the issue would be appreciated. Best, C.

Had my 16" M1 Pro MBP for a week now and 0 popping sound.
with my 14" it started after about 3 months.
I brought it back to the Apple support and got it back like 3 days later. They told me the inside of the Macbook was full of dust and dirt and all they did was clean it...I don't know how that can happen after like 3 months of using it only in my home...
it worked for like 2 weeks and since then the cracking an popping sounds are back. Not as bad as before, but still annoying

Hi Buzzman:

You are second person to report dirt inside the laptop that may have lead to popping/buzzing. Another MacRumor user stated they found a small rock in their unit.

My 1st MBP16 had speaker popping like there was foreign material was on the driver. I returned it. The 2nd MBP16 that I have had for 5 weeks is yet to make any such noise.

Don
