Apple still signs for for OTA updates on selected legacy iOS versions on iPad 2 devices. This is due to bugs in the migration scripts and partition resizing that cannot be retroactively fixed.

If you are currently on 9.3.4/9.3.3/9.3.2/9.3.1/9.3/9.2.1/9.2/9.1/9.0.2/9.0.1 and if your iPad 2 is manufactured before March 2012, you can revert back to 6.1.3 or 8.4.1.

can you please post or send me a link to how I may downgrade my old iPad2? been needing to do this for a long while.

Apple should have simply rolled the 'smart connection' onto all future iPads, not just reserved for the Pros.
Didn't they realise they could make more accessory sales if this was available on the entry level iPad?

I would love a water resistant 9.7 iPad Pro 2 (with 3.5mm port). C'mon, Apple!

Bought a new nTB MacBook Pro and the new 2017 iPad few weeks ago.

Returned the iPad after a week. The big game changer was the lack of the anti reflective coating. That was something i just couldn't get around. I use the iPad in the car a lot and the bright light really made the screen hard to look at combined with the reflections. Screen is very bright though indoors. Went back to my 128 Air 2. Anti reflective coating is a must for me. Size, etc was no problem for me.

A lot of people dislike the new iPad so I thought I'll throw in my opinion. I'm a university student studying computer science, and carrying textbooks around campus got really tedious so I decided to get the new iPad. I didn't really want to spend the extra money for the 9.7 pro because I don't think I'd use the pro features.

Anyways, I bought the basic iPad for about $300ish with my student discount, and I am really enjoying it. Having never owned an iPad before, the screen isn't as bad as I expected without lamination. It's still a retina display, so reading text is great. Outside there is a bit of glare, however. Perfomance wise, I havent really experienced any hiccups, and I've been multitasking, using PiP mode, etc.

For a $300 device, I'm extremely satisfied.

For the money it is a good basic tablet.

Agreed. The target market is mid-range tablet buyers. I don't think there are any brand-name Android tablets even competing there anymore that's even close to the specs of the 2017 iPad (5th gen). Apple enjoys massive economies of scale which is what made this possible even with Apple's high profit margin target.

Everyone keeps comparing 2017 iPad to the Air 2 which is $70 more MSRP. Yes, there have been $100 off sales on the Air 2 but that's mostly the retailer's decision (likely as loss leaders) and $30 discounts on the 2017 iPad have been pretty regular. It's not like the Air 2 is massively better than the 2017 iPad. It's just got a nicer screen and is slightly lighter and thinner because of that, that's all.

Besides, even without the discount, the $329 price is still pretty good. Going up to $399 is a ~20% price increase. This may not be significant for a lot of MacRumors forum members but we're not the target market anyway.

I think it's a wise move. You can always put high quality anti glare (read: ACTUAL anti glare) over the new iPad to solve this issue.

Plus, for most people it comes down to this: have it, and pay a fortune to get it fixed if it breaks.. or live with it and pay less when it breaks.

For who it's aimed at in the market, the latter was decided by Apple to be a better choice with lower sale price. And let's face it, those guys at Apple rarely screw up in giving people a reason to spend their money as we all know first hand.

I agree. It would be nice if they had a smart connector on the 2017 9.7 iPad. It would make it more accessible and use it as a laptop. However, that also takes away from the iPad Pro features. There has to be a separation from the budget iPad from the iPad Pro. I think otherwise you take away justifications for why somebody would upgrade to the iPad Pro for and Apple wants a distinct advantage for the Pro Series.

So Apple will release this new "iPad", which doesn't have a proper name by the way, and is much more thicker and heavier than the iPad Air 2 (6.1mm/437g), the iPad Pro 9.7 (also 6.1mm/437g) and only thicker (not heavier) than the gigantic iPad Pro 12.9 (6.9mm).

It's actually 7.5mm thick and weight 469g which are the same specifications than the 2013 iPad Air 1.

And it have mostly the same specifications as the iPad Air 2 from 2014 except that the display is not laminated and it doesn't have the anti-reflective coating anymore. However, it does have the A9 chip instead of the A8 which means :

-No A9X.
-No four stereo speakers.
-No True-Tone display.
-No 12mpx and 5mpx cameras on the front and back.
-No Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard support.
-No Rose Gold color option.
-Maybe others things that I forgot to mention...

The only real advantage I see is in term of battery life because it goes back to the 32.4Wh of the iPad Air 1 from the 27.5Wh of the iPad Air 2/iPad Pro 9.7.

Anyway, there might be surprises when the product get released but this is what we have at the moment from the product page on the Apple website.

So I would like to hear your thoughts on it. Would you buy it ? I know the price is quite good at 329$ for the 32GB but the specifications are for the most part coming straight from 2014.
Also would you go back to that 7.5mm/469g after we got used to much thinner and lighter iPads in favor of a better battery life ?

Waiting to hear your opinions on this product and have a nice day.

I bought the Verizon iPad 32GB version. To be honest, since I've never had an iPad with those features, I'm not missing anything. The only reason why I notice the thickness is because I came from a iPad Mini 2 16GB, which was a lot smaller and lighter than the 2017 iPad. To be honest, I prefer the bigger iPad.

A few further thoughts on the 5th gen iPad vs. 9.7 Pro, as I own both, and have purposely split their usage around the house at 50/50.

The 5th gen is really plenty fast! I rarely notice the non-bonded screen. The real feature of this device is the outstanding battery life. I can live with the added bulk vs. the 9.7 Pro, and much of the size/weight difference might just boil down to the case(s) you use on each.

The 9.7 Pro is really the winner when it comes to screen color accuracy, and speaker quality. Most people don't care about color accuracy improvements, and if you rarely use the built-in speakers, the 5th gen is a great tablet for almost everyone.

Another family member needs a faster iPad (they can't stand safari reloading tabs)
Give them my air 2 and I get this new 2017 iPad or I keep using the air 2 and give them the 2017 iPad ?
I'm not sure which is better I don't care about the air Gap on the screen thing

Btw this for an older person who doesn't care about greatest and latest , they just don't want safari to reload when leaving a tab coming back (iPad mini 2)
Also my air 2 is almost 2 years old

I'm bummed that the silicone rear case for the 12.9 gen. 2 is going to require buying a new one. The first-gen case has the camera setup in a different place. :(
