Are you saying it sounds better? I would think it's an advantage then.
Yes it is an advantage. I was being a bit sarcastic in response to the person that said that the new iPad is worse than the Air 2 in every way (other than processor). Apparently they either forgot or were unaware of the Air 2's shortcomings with regard to the speakers.

I liked the Air 2, but hated the sounds. Sold it last week for a decent price in anticipation of the new batch. I did get a 9.7 pro, and it was great, but returned it. For me it wasn't worth the extra $. I don't plan to use an iPad outside, so maybe the fact that the new iPad lacks the laminated display won't be an issue.

Better sound is now a shortcoming? Or are we talking about that hyperbolic claim that the Air 2 is unusable with audio playing because ooooooo it shakes the screen a little bit? lol.

YOU have injected hyperbole by saying the Air 2 is unusable. I didn't claim it. It would be helpful if you respond to what is actually said rather than mis-characterize things and respond to the mischaracterization.

Vibration is not hyperbolic. It's fact. The iPad Air 2 vibrates when the volume is raised above 1/3 volume. Not having the unit vibrate is better than having it vibrate. At least for rational-thinking people.

So many pedantic nerds here. "Unusable", "Horrible screen gap", "Horrible black frame around the screen" etc.

Your extremely pedantic posts are scaring off regular users. So let me reassure them:

There is nothing at all wrong with the screen on the New 2017 iPad.

The screen difference is like the iPad Air 1 (non-laminated) vs iPad Air 2 (laminated). Lamination just meant that Apple glued together the glass, LCD and touch digitizer layers to make them all thinner.

But when the iPad Air 2 came out with that feature, the general reaction was a "sorta neat... meh" from the tech world. Now people act like the removal of that feature is the end of the world.

Honestly, the anti-reflective coating of the Air 2 reduced reflections by ~50% compared to the Air 1. And the laminated screen made you feel a tiny bit closer to touching the graphics on screen, and reduced the size of the frame around the screen. So yes, all nice screen upgrades thanks to lamination. But by no means essential.

And the other annoying thing in this thread is that people keep fearmongering that everyone "must buy the space gray iPad 2017 model to get a black border to hide the horrible screen gap". Ehhh... What a pedantic thing to worry about in life.

Look at this WHITE iPad Air 1 and WHITE iPad Air 2 side by side. ;-) The new iPad 2017 is like the Air 1 when it comes to case size and screen border size. And they're both great! Almost nobody normal is going to care. And Apple makes the iPad Pro for those few people who do care (most MacRumors folks are definitely not normal users).

The "end of the world" posts will hopefully end after this video, right?

Great idea to drop the Air Name - makes more sense.

However, in Australia it is too expensive, and it should have gotten an A10.

Apple should have taken the Air 2 and put an A10 in it and called it a day. Or this model should have been cheaper.

No - its because the entire Air2 vibrated like a 1980's pager on a marble countertop if you dared to turn up the sound like 1/3 of the way or more. It sucked and killed my desire to own that model. The screen also resonated badly when you typed on it with any kind of music playing. Gaming was affected too. Horible design. They did not think about speaker padding or whatever. If this new one fixes this then its a nice upgrade per se. ;)

"pedantic" wouldn't be the word that I would use... "melodramatic drama queens engaging in hyperbole" would the be phrase. :)

And yet I own one and it doesnt do that.

This is the first ipad that doesnt catch attention at all, only 11 pages reply.

@j2ee This iPad is selling rapidly. People love its price. It bridges the gap between Android and iOS prices, and for just a little more, regular people can afford an iPad now!

Try getting this one with a white frame. It's sold out everywhere I've been to. There's always a few Space Gray left though. White is favored by girls (just search for "What's on my iPad" on YouTube, almost all are women with white iPads) and black is favored by men. So I'm going to guess lots of girls who are not that into technology but have always wanted an iPad can now justify the new, low price of just $329.

For the price and the targeted users (first iPad users) it is a great device. For people who had an Air 2 before the new iPad is a step back. This is because Apple is splitting the iPad line just like the Macbook line. Before we had one device that was fitting to almost every user. Now we have an entry model (iPad/Macbook) and a more advanced version (iPad Pro/Macbook Pro) for the iPad lineup just like we had it for years now with the Macbook. The reason for this is probably, and who can blame the company for that, more revenue.

Your location doesnt represent the rest of the world. You can easily sense not many people talk about it online.

And tech sites and forums are probably not representative of the target audience for this.

Besides, this is more like a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic. Inexpensive and does the job of getting you from Point A to Point B but not exactly something you brag about on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook.

@rui no onna The funniest part is that the iPad Pro's CPU is only 15-20% faster, and its GPU is only 30% faster.

The biggest reasons for the Pro aren't the CPU or GPU. It's the laminated screen (kinda meh), wider display color range, smart pencil, smart keyboard, and quad speakers. None of which are a big deal unless you want to draw with a pencil. So there aren't a lot of reasons to buy the Pro. It's great for people who need to draw, but this "regular iPad" is scarily close in all other performance aspects.

I am sure they're planning big A10 updates to the Pro to put more of a gap between them, but right now the regular iPad is almost the same thing.

I would definitely not buy a Pro today unless I was a drawing artist. I bought the 128 GB white/silver iPad 2017 instead. For around half the price of a 128 GB Pro.

PS: Apple, y u no put a model number? What should we call this? I've seen iPad 5 and iPad 2017 so far. And it's dumb to date it by the year if you guys plan to sell this model for years. I guess we should say iPad 5?

Data doesn't lie:

From announcement of this ipad to anyone (at least in Hong Kong) can easily walk in Apple Store just pick any model without any queue, the number of people search for "ipad" doesn't raise at all comparing to what it used to be.

How rapidly? How many units have sold so far? Ohhhhhhh right you're clueless about actual facts and just spewing nonsense.
