What I can't understand is why the Mini 4 is still $400. It should be $329 also.

That $400 price is for the 128 GB model which used to cost $500. Apple is discontinuing the 32 GB model. 128 GB is the only choice now.

I was hoping for a price reduction on the 32 GB model. I don't need 128 GB. Kind of disappointed. :(

Air 2 has faster multi-core, while slower single-core. Remember Air 2 has a tri-core processor.

http://wccftech.com/apple-a9xipad-pro-benchmarks/ (scroll down to the second set of comparisons)

Thanks, I had forgotten about that. But the benchmark difference seems to be purely academical in multi core tasks - possibly within the margin of error of the test, while the A8X gets properly whipped in single core tasks by the A9 according to the graphs, so I still wouldn't really claim that the new iPad is a slower tablet.

I wouldn't claim that either, but, depending on what you use your iPad for. If you need the multi-core, then Air 2 would probably still be better suited for those needs. The new iPad is probably overall slightly faster. Definitely not an A9 -> A10 type of difference. But the A9 in the iPad is powering a lot more hardware than a 6s/6s+.

I know.. but I still think it should be $329. It's a two year old iPad. But that isn't the way Apple does stuff.

This is finally a chance to upgrade my iPad Air without spending a lot of money. Also I can probably use my Air's leather case with it, saving even more money.

I'm not a heavy iPad user, but the Air has gotten slow and clunky, mostly due to it having only 1GB of RAM. This iPad will solve that problem, and also gives me TouchID which makes it slightly more convenient to use. I have no need for all the Pro stuff; if I'm doing anything serious I pull out my Macbook Pro, and I'm not an artist so the pencil is useless to me.

I'll be buying this next week for sure.
This would be for you then! Performance of new iPad with your identical screen and dimensions for your current accessories

Unless it's a mistake on the comparison page, The new iPad doesn't even have the laminated display that has been the norm on iPads since the Air 2. Anyone who has gone from an Air to an Air 2, or a Mini 2/3 to a Mini 4 can tell you that this is actually a noticeable step back! I'm thinking this must be a mistake in the spec sheet

Not likely. This is an explicit low-end product designed for those who want iPad functionality on the cheap.

It's not slower but the A8X is still a beast of a chip mainly the 8 core gpu vs 6 core in A9.

I'll still wait for benchmarks from the actual product before passing a verdict. And for anyone who needs more power than the A9 there's still the A9X in the Pro - at a cost, of course. I'm liking my 9.7" Pro plenty.

Timmy couldn't "be more excited about our future product pipeline".

What the hell happened to you Apple? Get that fake out of there and replace him with a visionary CEO!

That's a bummer, the laminated display makes a big difference in my opinion, everything on the display is sharper and more colorful with it. That could be a deal breaker for anyone that want to upgrade from an iPad Air 2.

Anyway, I edited the original post to add this to the cons. Let's hope we don't discover another downgrade compared to previous iPads.

I was about to buy it to replace my shattered iPad Air 2 until I saw that it's back to being as thick as the original iPad Air. I passed on the iPad Air because it felt hollow and cheap. Guess I'll keep waiting for that rumored 10.5" iPad.

Again: The upgrade path from the Air 2 is the Pro, which remains the high-end product line. This is a cheaper Air 2 replacement.

Honestly, this iPad isn't an "upgrade" over the Air 2.

Based on initial research the Gpu power is weaker than Air 2

I know the A9 and A8X is really pretty toe to toe in terms of overall performance.

I understand that but I think Apple could have made a little step further and at least keep the laminated display and include more upgraded specs (I said upgraded not the latest and greatest from the iPhone 7) like a 5mpx front facing camera.

I mean, just look at the iPhone SE, this is a true iPhone 5s replacement not a cheap version of it. The fact that this iPad replace the iPad Air 2 but have gotten worse in some aspects is quite unacceptable in my opinion.

It's like Apple release an iPad with a non retina display today and price it at 199$ or something like that, it's a good price but the retina display is the standard of all Apple products it shouldn't be an option at all.

In most aspects this is the SE of iPad but I do agree they could've atleast just laminated the display I mean come on Apple.

Apple is clearly trying to push people to the Pro models here. For people who don't need Pencil support, the Air 2 was good enough all around to draw them away from the higher-priced Pro. By making the chassis thicker and heavier, and putting an inferior screen back in the product, Apple is creating a bigger distinction between the entry level model and the Pro. It will probably still be more than enough for the casual user, and those consumers will be getting a price cut as well. But, I'm betting quite a few more consumers will be taking a closer look at the Pro now that the Air 2 is no longer an option.

It's a win-win for Apple since they just significantly cut production costs on the entry level model while at the same time pushing more people to buy the far more expensive Pro model.

We are not in 2014 anymore the fact that this iPad replace the iPad Air 2 but have gotten worse in some aspects is quite unacceptable in my opinion.

Apple isn't in the charity business. They might have done what you said but then they would have kept the price. I figure they've been seeing the small price difference between a tricked-out Air 2 and the 9.7" Pro. Now there's a more clear reason to choose one over the other.

But still, it's not even a true 2017 iPad Air 2 replacement because it's downgraded in some aspects.

Of course its going to be slightly downgraded, its specifically being manufactured to be the entry level 'budget' iPad. They wouldnt be able to offer it at $329 otherwise. Chances are when/if Apple upgrades the Pro lineup in the next few weeks/months, the current Pro models will be priced at a point worth upgrading for iPad Air 2 users.
