I think it was the right decision at the right time.

Being serious, anyone knows that tablets (like smartphones) have become ordinary things. Except of a few people that always spend more money on ordinary things than necessary, most buyers spend just enough money on things so that they don't need to buy a second time soon.

And those people will like the iPad. Other brands are without updates, less security. Whilst an iPad runs about 4 years minimum with all updates, patches etc.

All apps are running on it, browsing is snappy and everything is good. Anti glare is not important at home use, most people never use their tablets away from home or outside.

The pen is really nothing that attracts buyers, nobody really wants to have this.

I think that times for innovation are over. Extra pixels here, buttons with extra features there, really, nobody cares for that.

Now it is the time of the eco systems. Do you want google to spy on you and sell all information to anyone or do you prefer Apple where you pay a little more so that you stay a costumer and don't become the product.

Do you want a System where anything works out of the box, for generations? Just fill in your account data and every iPad will be ready to go.

I don't have an iPad yet, but if i buy one, my choice would be the new cheap one.

-No A9X.
-No four stereo speakers.
-No True-Tone display.
-No 12mpx and 5mpx cameras on the front and back.
-No Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard support.
-No Rose Gold color option.
-Maybe others things that I forgot to mention...
No lamination screen, no anti reflective..so thats why is a thicker ipad
I think nobody for personal use will chose this instead of the ipad pro 9.7" just for a 270$ difference
. Too many compromises, yes maybe there are a lot of people who are not using the camera, or speakers or pencil smart keyboard, but not all of one at once. Inferior screen, inferior portability,no genuine accesories like pencil keyboard,a 2 years gen old chip

What? Nobody will buy one for personal use? Several people have already said they will buy one. Myself included.

Some of the commentary here is hilarious.

Millions of people bought the iPad Air 2 over the past year over the iPad Pro because it was cheaper. They will do the same thing with this device

I think this new iPad is a decent upgrade to the existing Air 2 and a GREAT option for those wanting an "entry level" iPad. Hopefully the greater thickness allows for a larger battery and maybe get it back to the battery life of the iPad 4. I miss the 13-14 hours of battery I was getting on my iPad 4.

Not to be a downer, but this $329 "iPad" is super lame! No anti-reflective, laminated display? Are you serious Apple? 7.5mm thick? If anyone thinks that those aren't a big deal, go look at an iPad Pro next to an original Air in a brightly lit room. This is a huge step back! I think the Air 2 is far and away a better tablet compared to this new "iPad". It's crazy to think the Air 2 was released 2 1/2 years ago too.

I was getting 16 on iOS 6. Got 13-14 on iOS 7 and I am barely scraping 14 with my 9.7 iPad Pro.

Probably 2GB

The air2 at its time was better than this

I dont understand why buy this when you could took the air2 ? The only reason to wait for the ipad pro 2?!

I could be wrong but I don't think the intent is that people who have an Air 2 today "upgrade" to this one.
And at CAD$50 less than the Air 2 for a stronger processor that's a good deal in my book.

The screen? This is the "MacBook Air screen is totally unusable" thing all over again. I use an iPad3 today and the screen works just fine. Sure the Air 2 would appear to have a nicer screen, but that doesn't make the new/old screen useless.

If I had an Air 2 it would work for me, but if I wanted to upgrade it for whatever reason, this new iPad wouldn't be it, it would be an iPad Pro(2).

Because it has more horsepower for less $ than the Air 2.

Exactly my point. I mean come on who wanted a cheaper ipad already bought an air2

And? When I update my devices be they phones, tablets or laptops, I have always given the legacy device to a family member. If no family member wants it, then it goes to a charity or other group in support of our military.
Is not the proper term "gifting"? ;)

Got me good?
You were hoping for a upgrade and Apple played you like a fiddle. Im just giving you crap man

Many of the features you listed are very clearly Pro only features. They are exclusive to the 10.5" and 12.9" Pro models this year. This years 'iPad' is just that: An iPad. It's for the same market as 9.7" iPads in the past except appealing to a wider range of people thanks to the great price.

Except this time, with different models for both consumer and 'professional' needs, it allows Apple to keep the costs of this model lower. It doesn't have to have the best processor or the best screen or the most RAM, etc. and can just provide for the needs of the general consumer. It does that excellently and it is very much in a 'MacBook' position in that sense.

There is no better name for the model in my opinion. They could have added a number although that could prove confusing given previous naming terms and the fact that we're on 7/8. There's no way they would continue with Air.

This was exactly what I was expecting from the product to the name. Some people were expecting a new 9.7" Pro, which I kept saying isn't going to happen at all, and a few were expecting a 7.9" Pro which I think is obviously not going to happen. The only surprise here was the unlaminated screen and extra thickness that comes with it.

Overall, this is a fantastic product and exactly what Apple need, in terms of price, to not only get users of older iPads to upgrade (for many the expense was unjustified), but also reappeal to the educational market where they have lost market share to Chromebooks.

Are you kidding? Lots of people will choose this over a Pro for just $270. It's only tech enthusiasts who will really see the shortcomings. Most people will just see it as a new, less expensive iPad.

So Apple will release this new "iPad", which doesn't have a proper name by the way, and is much more thicker and heavier than the iPad Air 2 (6.1mm/437g), the iPad Pro 9.7 (also 6.1mm/437g) and only thicker (not heavier) than the gigantic iPad Pro 12.9 (6.9mm).

It's actually 7.5mm thick and weight 469g which are the same specifications than the 2013 iPad Air 1.

And it have mostly the same specifications as the iPad Air 2 from 2014 except that the display is not laminated and it doesn't have the anti-reflective coating anymore. However, it does have the A9 chip instead of the A8 which means :

-No A9X.
-No four stereo speakers.
-No True-Tone display.
-No 12mpx and 5mpx cameras on the front and back.
-No Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard support.
-No Rose Gold color option.
-Maybe others things that I forgot to mention...

The only real advantage I see is in term of battery life because it goes back to the 32.4Wh of the iPad Air 1 from the 27.5Wh of the iPad Air 2/iPad Pro 9.7.

Anyway, there might be surprises when the product get released but this is what we have at the moment from the product page on the Apple website.

So I would like to hear your thoughts on it. Would you buy it ? I know the price is quite good at 329$ for the 32GB but the specifications are for the most part coming straight from 2014.
Also would you go back to that 7.5mm/469g after we got used to much thinner and lighter iPads in favor of a better battery life ?

Waiting to hear your opinions on this product and have a nice day.

I will be buying this. My wife and I use the original iPad Mini to watch Netflix and movies in bed. At this price point it's a perfect replacement. Don't need all the fancy features, as it will only be used for video streaming.

Not the point. Apple is choosing a cheap iPhone 5C approach with this iPad. Apparently, they didn't learn their lesson. The iPad Air 2 with an 9X for $399 is a better option, but they clearly want to make the iPad Pro more appealing, instead of doing the real work and fixing the software.

Makes great sense if you work in an enterprise or education market where the screen and speakers are less important than battery life. I suspect we would have gotten these to replace our Air 2 leased units had they been out a few months ago. This would also be a great replacement for anyone still on an iPad 2-4 but with a limited budget (my wife's grandmother for example). Vast improvement over an iPad 2 or 3, but relatively reasonably priced. And I suspect there will be closeouts on Air 2s now so that might be a better bet for individual purchases.

Wouldn't you be open to a good sale pro 9.7 instead if patient? I gotta 32 wifi for 375 at the end of summer2016 :D new

anyone who wanted a cheaper ipad than the pro, i think already bought the ipad iar 2, so...

For the last few years I have read complaints about Apple making things thinner just for the sake of making them thinner. Now that this iPad is thicker than the last one people are again freaking out. Hilarious!

I think it's just cause it doesn't really have to be thicker. It probably is because they cheaped on getting thin screen tech if I had to guess.

Curious to see this thing get ifixit treatment
