Congrats... I sold my 2.8 quad on Friday and get my new one on Monday, it's all coming together like the last 5 minutes of a Mission Impossible episode :)

Excellent resale value on the old box.

Shipped

I just received the ship notice last night, 3/7. Mine will be here tomorrow, 3/9. The original ETA was 3/12 to 3/16.

Looks like things are moving faster than expected.

FYI in my case, the orginal 16 gb of ram was what slowed it dow to 3/22, not the 4870. Going back to the original 6 gb of ram moved it up to 3/12.

Can't wait! :D

2.26 octo here Custom built with ATI Radeon HD 4870.
The original estimate was a couple weeks but I got an email saying the shipment was moved up and will be getting it on the 11th :):):)
Thanks :apple:

im having a firewire delima ... i just realized i have a few devices that are firewire 400 and the mac pro only has 800 ... hmmmmm ... i guess i can use usb 2.0 but how fast is that compared to 400? specially my sony pro camcorder has firewire 400 and to use usb to transfer video footage ... dont want to be all day

How? You can't use them both.

Sure you can. Bear in mind the Mac Pro is specced to run configurations like 3 GT 120s, RAID card, 32 GB, 4 HDDs, 7 bus-powered USB devices & 4 bus-powered FireWire devices, and dual optical drives.

If you aren't using all of that stuff I'm sure there are enough watts left over.

After all, looking at power consumption figures, it looks as though a GeForce 120 is almost exactly half the power consumption of a 4870.

Okay, but how will you get the power to the second card?

I would use one Y adapter off of one of the existing cables:

http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=186&products_id=24474

and one tap from the optical drive power:

http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=186&products_id=24178

If as I suspect the optical drives are SATA now, and use SATA power connectors, then this little adapter would be required:

If all else failed you could also get an additional power tap out of an unused HD hot-swap bay using the above adapter.

no worries. Just get one or more of http://www.buy.com/prod/belkin-firewire-cable-1-x-firewire-1-x-firewire-6ft-white-belkin/q/loc/101/10344834.html

I imagine you could buy one of these and get a powered firewire hub if you need lots of firewire ports.

I envy all of you, seems like i will be ordering mine on the 11th or 12th ... after you guys have already received yours. At least i'll have stats and benchmarks to obsess over till i get mine.

does anyone know for 100% sure that 2 ati cards 4780's is possible

Why spend over $21 when you can get the same thing for less than $7 from monoprice.com?

Or you could try something like this. Price is in between other suggestions, but some just hate having so many extra wires, a plug might be nice. Found this one for cheaper but who knows once you factor in shipping. Could shop around, don't have either but if I needed one I'd look into it more. Since I already have a firewire 400 cable I'd consider it, since I seem to have too many wires as it is.
