I still don't believe that it is. Can you get enough power for one from just the one open optical drive bay?
And if you have two optical drives, is there a way to get the power you need?

edit - I ended up calling Apple. Apparently it arrives in the UK on Wednesday and will be delivered on Thursday or Friday.

funny i got the same thing ... initiated ... delivery 3/9 .. dont think that is gonna happen... i spoke to apple and they said they made the label and waiting for fedex to pick-up so 3/9 is out of the question ... 3/10 likely

Why is this new memory being backordered ?
I changed my order thinking the video card was the holdup. BIG mistake. Now I have to order the video card separate and that takes 3-5 weeks.

The apple store memory was backed up too. Is there a in stock, 3rd party suitable memory supplier alternative? probably would be less expensive anyway.

dont order 2 gb sticks from apple those are backorder will slow down ur order stick with the default 6 gb and it will go much faster
The reason for the 8Gb is it leaves me with 4 free bays for the memory I have sitting here, rather than throwing the 6gb in the bin.
Hey if all your worried about is power you do realize that you can buy an external power supply that has any where from 100w up to 500w. I'm on my phone right now so I can't give a link but just browse newegg. Also the 4780 that's included for the mac pro has crossfire connectors so you should be able to snap a cross fire bridge on there and attempt to run them in windows.
