Apple Store

The massive steelworks are because they are going upwards and adding another floor (for the Hotel) - even the corner turret is being dismantled and re-built. The Hotel entrance is well away from the shopfront - up at the corner in West Register Street.
And by the way, there will be no tram stop at the door - the trams will be going up and down St Andrew Street, and along Princes Street, not passing the East End.
The shopping standard in the area is not as bad as mentioned above - apart from the new St James Centre (in a year or two) and the Princes Mall, Multrees Walk with Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein, Emporio Armani, and others, is just round the corner. Harvey Nichols, the Edinburgh Bus Station, and Waverley Station and of course, the five star Balmoral Hotel - even Microsoft has a big office across the road.

Edinburgh Apple Store

Just wondering if anyone has any idea on expected completion dates or store opening dates? :)

First Post!

Hey, found this by accident...

Just been on the phone with the council on an unrelated matter but it was mentioned the there is a planning meeting this afternoon on the site of the Apple store (quickly corrected to 'Secret Store'!)

The building work itself still has some way to go though I wouldn't be expecting anything for at least 2-3 months (Just in time for Christmas? No way they can miss that!)

Not at all!

Although I do live about a minutes walk from 'the store' so I won't be very happy if too many people start camping for the upcoming iWhatever!

I could even get a photo tonight if people are interested?

The location at the east end of Princess Street is just a shell at the moment. Can't really guess that much from the actual building. I noticed today that there is an empty space more towards the west end of Princess Street. Looks like a valid location for Apple too.

I've been waiting years for an Apple store to pop up in edinburgh, but so far no damn luck.

The council are totally inept, so don't be surprised if this NEVER happens or Apple gets bored of their faffing around and pulls out.

Seriously, these clowns spend 500(or more) mil on god damn trams, TRAMS??????????

500. Million. Pounds.

TRAMS!

Hell, the school my sister goes to still uses the original iMacs, you know the very first ones?
That's our educational 'computer labs', so you can see they don't exactly have their priorities straight.

So don't expect them to attract commerce to the city with an Apple store.

The original iMacs are still perfectly fine for educational purposes. What are they using them for that you think they need the latest and greatest?

From what I read, the council was very excited for Apple to be bringing a store to our main street. The site which has been rumoured, is definitely going to be the site. Apple will already have put money towards the redevelopment of the site.

If he means G3 iMacs then there's no way they are perfectly fine for educational purposes!

You're joking right?

OS 9?

I'm not saying students should have retina MBPs (though with the money they've spent on the stupid trams, they could literally buy a rMBP for two thirds of the population of edinburgh), but 1999 iMacs, with that kind of money pissed down the drain for trams?

You're disagreeing with me for the sake of disagreeing, the council are morons, that's why there's no Apple store (and probably never will be an apple store here).

Ah for some reason I thought you meant the original flatscreen white iMacs.

Why not?

The underlying concepts of both computer science and computing in general have not changed that much since these computers were released.

Schools use computers for many things, high on the list is browsing the web. Try browsing the web on a G3, it will be painful. This is to name but one example.

The world has moved on since the G3, there will be so many pieces of software unavailable to the G3 user, no security updates etc.

Technology becomes obsolete.

It'd be learning to design websites with tables, totally pointless since it's outdated.

Fact is, the council have their priorities wrong, the teams illustrate that perfectly.
Don't expect an Apple store in Edinburgh, ever.

It is still a mess of construction:mad: I was pro trams before they put a bunch of incompetent public sector middle managers in charge of the project and allowed them to completely screw it up. I don't blame the contractors on this at all, looks like they provided quotes and completion estimates based on the screwy infrastructure information the council gave them.

On a brighter note just had a MBP repair turned around in 24hours by Opal CS on Queen Street, great to have an Apple authorised repair centre in the city centre again.

Why were you protrams? The route out from Corstorphine was on a custom built road just for buses, which is now being used by the trams. So really there's no time benefit to using the tram.

If I had been in charge, I'd have pedestrianised Princes St (like Buchanan St in Glasgow). The buses were doing fine going along George St.

The original proposal was to continue down leith walk and then loop back around the north of the city (Granton etc) I thought this would be great for redevelopment of these areas. The project soon became so compromised I jumped off the pro Trams wagon.

I agree that the current project (as it has stood for the last few years) is a complete waste of time.

Princes St would do well to be pedestrianised. Also the money for the trams would have been better spent trying to spur a bit of a facelift for princes st. It is currently a dolly mixture bag of very badly designed 70s architecture and shoddy integration with original period features. Looks a bit of a mess when looking over from the mound.

They should have spent a fraction of the trams money on a new railway station at the end of the runway at Edinburgh Airport.

I forget the reason why this wasn't really feasible. That's been thrown around umpteen times yet never comes to anything.
