An obvious upgrade would be an M-series processor.
If Apple did that, then the Apple TV would be a dead product with no users. They have been working on lowering the cost of the device over recent years.
Why not both?

Why not a cheap sub-$100 (Better yet, $50) ATV4K that is passively-cooled, with a small amount of storage as the base model, and one that would be more powerful, actively-cooled ATV4K with larger storage as a more expensive higher tier?

If Apple did that, then the Apple TV would be a dead product with no users.
By some metrics, this is already the case.

I know a lot of people who own an iphone and dont even know what an Apple TV is.
Yup...

In my experience, the average person, and even some techies don't know what an ATV4K is. When I talk about the Apple TV outside of Mac Rumors, people often think I am talking about either an actual television or Apple TV+.

Oh yeah, one of my favorite responses is when people say "I don't need a separate box, I have the Apple TV built-in to my Smart TV.". I have seen similar responses on the MR forum.

A lot of people forget that the Apple TV used to be the #1 streaming box in the early 2010's, but hardly a piece of the pie on modern charts.

The biggest thing holding the ATV from success again has been Apple. They hardly ever talk about it or advertise it. Apple needs to talk about it, tell people why the ATV is so great, and explain why people should be forking over money to use it over built-in Smart TV apps or a FireStick. But, they don't. I assume it is because the ATV4K doesn't have the margins that their other products have.

Serious question to the thread, how many Apple TV 4K commercials have you seen in the last month? Last Year? Ever? Just a guess, but I feel like "zero" would probably be a common answer to all three questions.

The biggest mistake they made was lobotomizing internal storage. At a minimum, external USB storage should have been supported. By now, ATV should have a TB4 port.

Agreed. ATV is a victim of the missteps with Siri. Steve announced the killer interface for the ATV but Siri has never worked reliably. Maybe Apple's refocus on AI will bring some fresh air to ATV.

Would like to see Apple revisit the Front Row interface and implement it with the revised/reborn AI functionality.

For everyone who wants an M powered gaming version of the AppleTv, it already exists. If thats what you need/want, buy a Mac Mini and have a blast.

AppleTV is a bit more than the hardware and an HDMI port. Convince Apple to revive FrontRow for Mac and this becomes a valid "pro" AppleTV option. Until then, it's running something else (without full compatibility with select "walled garden" things) and/or someone has to have a wireless mouse/trackpad and keyboard over by the main seating area.

I for one would be 100% for this with a FrontRow 2 release. I'm less interested if it has to lean on Plex or similar for an AppleTV-like UI experience.

Apple and gaming are two things that will never go together. The extent of Apple's gaming interest is Arcade.

I wouldn't say that at all. It's more like Apple is not interested in console-style gaming.

The only chance I see for AAA console titles becoming a regular thing on Apple TV is if subscription model takes over in console gaming. Otherwise, AAA devs need/expect to charge $40-$60 a game, which of course is not gonna happen on Apple's platform, as it exists today.

I have an ATV 4K (1st Gen, 2017) and money on my Apple account that I want to spend, so hoping there is an imminent release. My ATV still works fine, it's not an exciting piece of hardware but it does what I need it to.

The article literally “sourced” their info from MR which is just speculating and doesn’t have any inside information on a possible release date.
Sorry, it was the first one I’d seen and I hadn’t noticed another article sourced in the thread.

I see that Netflix will stop supporting older TVs and Sony mentioned it impacts their 2014 and older TVs where the netflix App will no longer work after July. I have the Apple TV from 2015 and wonder if that will soon loose support from Netflix. That could force a lot of Apple TV updates.

Thing is, the software/app used on the currently supported Apple TV devices is the same. If netflix updates their app, I doubt they will be making a distinction about which hardware it works with despite being the same version of TvOS it is compatible with today. As long as they are supported by Apple, I dont see why the Netflix app would stop working.

You are being completely unreasonable. Apple does not have the resources to market Apple TV. They need to allocate resources to iPhone marketing, otherwise the company will fail.

Basically, if your Apple TV runs on tvOS (ie. has a tvOS App store) you are good to go! 👍

I'm lost.
I've used computers to stream, fire sticks, playstations, AppleTV. So far, the AppleTV is my favorite. I don't know when we'll get an update, but I've been holding off getting one for myself (I've bought 2 for my parents' over the years and them a couple firesticks for other TVs). Eagerly awaiting an update. Hopefully this fall? Maybe?

They may make new product called Apple Theatre with an A17 Pro that does surround with 4 Apple Home Pods, Apple Intelligence and a built-in FaceTime Camera with Center Stage, but what do I know? lol!

If they would have looked at the market and learned from it, they’d be in a much different place. How does apple see the success of fire stick or Roku and goes “ya know what? Let’s come out with a streaming box thats almost $200”

No. Most people don’t care about games or most apps. They just want to stream. Apple should have released a $70 streaming stick years ago figuring they would make all that money back in subscriptions and content purchases

If they make a $1000 Apple TV like that, then they will kill the product. Almost all of the news reports for the last few years are about Apple trying to get the Apple TV to the $100 price point.

Yeah, I agree. What price point would be ideal do you think for something like that aka Apple Theatre or Apple TV Pro?
