Yeah, I agree. What price point would be ideal do you think for something like that aka Apple Theatre or Apple TV Pro?
There isn't an ideal price point because they can't break into the market that is owned by Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft with just good hardware. And despite Apple giving lip service to games, they have never taken it seriously beyond iOS gaming. Just look at the hardware they showed during the WWDC keynote when they mentioned gaming and the Apple TV was no where to be found.

Yup...

In my experience, the average person, and even some techies don't know what an ATV4K is. When I talk about the Apple TV outside of Mac Rumors, people often think I am talking about either an actual television or Apple TV+.

Oh yeah, one of my favorite responses is when people say "I don't need a separate box, I have the Apple TV built-in to my Smart TV.". I have seen similar responses on the MR forum.

A lot of people forget that the Apple TV used to be the #1 streaming box in the early 2010's, but hardly a piece of the pie on modern charts.

The biggest thing holding the ATV from success again has been Apple. They hardly ever talk about it or advertise it. Apple needs to talk about it, tell people why the ATV is so great, and explain why people should be forking over money to use it over built-in Smart TV apps or a FireStick. But, they don't. I assume it is because the ATV4K doesn't have the margins that their other products have.

Serious question to the thread, how many Apple TV 4K commercials have you seen in the last month? Last Year? Ever? Just a guess, but I feel like "zero" would probably be a common answer to all three questions.
I'm a tech junkie and all these years I had several Firesticks. They would freeze up, be glitchy, and flat out be slow as ever @ times but I lived with it....I had several of the Firestick Ultra 4Ks in my home. For $29 it is a steal...but after about 6 months they became sluggish and would run out of space. However, a few years back we were at our daughters house and she had an ATV...I was using it early AM while everyone was still sleeping and I was amazed how quick it responded, I'd click on an app and it would open instantly, I'd scroll through and it was extremely fluid with zero stuttering--- the remote felt solid and I thought to myself "why don't I have one of these"? Then my daughter said "Dad, they're $149 each". That didn't compute with me---there's no way I'm spending $450 for 3 TVs to have ATV. So I stuck with my crappy Firesticks----until I was on eBay and an ATV 4K (used) came across my phone for $34 but with no remote. So I tried it, set it up at home and instantly looked for another used one. I did end up with a new one for $109 and I will never go back.
But you're correct---Apple needs to push these harder. They are a great box and when people come over they usually ask "what's that"? I explain and they are interested until I tell them the price new---then they're turned off. Apple should blow a batch out before Christmas for $50 and get them into people's homes then remarket from there.

How about this

2024/25 - Apple TV SE - A17 Pro Chip
2024/25 - Apple TV Max - M1 Chip
2024/25 - Apple TV Pro - M4 Chip

Apple TV SE is a Streaming Stick also can be used as a multi screen device paired with a “Home/Slave” box which enables all home TV’s to be a Apple home TV’s running TVOS. Utilising the storage of the main box.

This could be useful when using Apple TV when connecting to a TV provider such as EETV in the UK 🇬🇧.

All have Apple intelligence hence chip choices

All have at least a 3yr life if not a lot lot more.

Apple TV SE (New Streaming Stick) - £79/$79/€79 - 64GB or 128GB

Apple TV Max to replace current 2022 4K box - £150/$150/€150 - 256GB

Apple TV Pro (New) to run games and anything more intense Apps
£199/$199/€199 - 1TB

Maybe also a Soundbar with a cutout for the addition of one of these boxes. Would also work as a standalone like the HomePods

This kills the Firestick & Roku boxes etc.

And if side loading is let in then this wins all battles - ALL apps available.

Also a wildcard addition - Apple VPN to give users total worldwide Privacy & Anonymity.

Can't see Apple doing a "stick." But a Pro model for gaming makes sense IF Apple can get AAA console devs on board. (Also means doing an official Apple game controller)

I like the idea of an Apple sound bar with integrated Apple TV 4K hardware. Makes sense for sure!

I think it is to risky to introduce a new product (even if it is just a variant) just because of gaming. I'd say Apple will try to improve Mac gaming in general by improving on the Game Porting Toolkit. And as soon as they hit a certain benchmark in terms of macOS-compatible games and Mac App Store revenue they'll consider putting an M-Chip into an Apple TV.

I think the 3 tier option would work in the ecosystem in the same way it does with iPads and iPhones. The portable bedroom cart around version being the stick. Also flexible enough for use as a multiroom device in conjunction with the other boxes
and then you have the main box as is now with some upgraded internals
and then a vastly powerful box that does the labour intensive tasks including gaming not just gaming.

I’d get the main box and at least 3 sticks for multi screen viewing and family bedrooms

I'd dig a streaming stick from Apple. Kinda ridiculous how limited I am when traveling as far as mirroring content to TVs from my iPad or iPhone. Hotel and AirBnB TVs almost never play ball. The AirBnBs, at least, usually have a smart TV or streaming box but it'd be nice not to have to sign into these rando devices and remember to sign out when I leave.

I still have either the HD or the 1st gen 4K. Not sure which. Probably the HD. It still gets updates, and works fine.

I wouldn’t count on the new Apple TV making an appearance at WWDC. From what I’ve seen in the past, Apple tends to release their TV updates in the fall. But if you’re into Apple stuff like me, it’s worth checking out any leaks or rumors that might pop up around the event!
Yeah I doubt they release A new Apple Tv a month ago

Apple has released Apple TV hardware in January, March, May, September, October, and November. There's no way to discern which time of the year they will release new hardware based on their history.

And few people ever noticed. I don't know a single person who has an Apple TV.

i doubt this will happen but it would be nice for Apple to have a Kaliedescape type offering that’s a bit more mass market , a pro tv version that opens access to higher quality bitrates on audio/video- downloadable. The cheapest Kaleidescape is still around 4 grand so perhaps apple can have some options in between.

How about the Apple TV SE having the A18 chip not the A17 for full Apple Intelligence support.

Just getting Apple Intelligence on every single device. Apple TV is the bridge to so many other devices.
Matter, Thread & Apple Intelligence leveraging the partnership and integration between them.
A 3 tier Apple TV strategy would be fantastic.
A18, M1 & M4 all driving the “TV” but really making the most of the development of home apps & games in arcade and sports and fitness and health etc.

SE, Max, Pro in TV similar as in other Products such as iPhone iPad headphones watches etc

I agree, there are so limited applications for AI at this point, it’s more about getting all products on Apple Intelligence supported hardware. I expect an A18-based Apple TV to be released in the next 6 months along with an updated A18-based iPad mini to round out the lineup.

AI will be so much better and quicker to respond to contextual queries and also be conversational so there can be active dialogue between you and the Apple TV, this is why it needs to be available via the A18 on the Apple TV SE HDMI streaming stick, the A18 Pro powered Apple TV Box and at least the M1 in a Pro box that can also be a slave box to the streaming stick for the whole home with all having the capabilities to seamlessly respond to advances in technology.

Hey guys, I am trying to get a 3rd gen 4K ATV 128 GB (I want Ethernet) and looking for one around 100 Euros (EU, retail price is €199 for the 128GB model).
Honestly I just want to switch to Apple for my TV as well (have Firestick atm but not happy) and also I would have a home hub for my lights and I'd be able to test HomeKit to its full potential.

Do you think scoring one for around €100 would be good at this point, Q4 2024? I've been waiting for a while but there is zero news about the next gen ATV and honestly I doubt I'd need the extra features or power (my TV is still 1080p lol). just want to make sure I'm not wasting money.

I am aware that the current gen ATV already has more than enough power under the hood to handle most task, so I'm pretty sure it's okay to get one now as long as I'm not overpaying, but just wanted to make sure.

Cheers!

There are a lot of suggesitions here that overcomplicate the Apple TV's core job which is getting the interface out of the way fast enough so you can actually watch something. It doesn't need to run complex apps because this is an incredibly niche market.

An A18 version that just happens to run those top-level games would be nice but it really just needs a faster chipset to let you watch TV faster.

A fast processor makes it easier to do PIP and alternate video & audio streams as well.

I think the future of gaming on a TV is streaming. Local gaming will be PC-only pretty soon. Other than Nintendo, everyone seems to be moving towards cloud gaming and streaming. To that end, the SoC and local GPU matters a whole lot less than network connectivity. Wifi8 is designed to address a lot of that - most of that innovation is designed for low-latency uses.

Streaming is incredibly convenient if you have the internet speed. I use it on my Xbox to save space all the time.

In recent years though there has been a lot of pushback from enthusiasts about the idea of licence purchase, ownership and perpetually renting things forever. California recently passed a law meaning that digital storefronts have to make it clear that buyers are only ever purchasing a licence and not at actual product, meaning buyers of plastic discs suddenly have a lot more rights over what they do with infinitely copiable computer code than digital buyers.

In other words there has been a lot to say from the community about having faceless corporations as the sole gatekeepers of software. Look at what has happened with TV: programs disappearing forever to prevent residuals with no physical release. Due to outdated copyright laws to gaming has already become commoditised; do we want a future where we can only play what Microsoft or Google deem their time to be worth?

The economic model, for at least the US, has really gradually pushed toward investors wanting to be rentiers. That's part of the reason for the cost of housing. They all are Ferengies at heart.
