Phillip,

thanks for taking time to give me a awesome answer. I'm so stubborn, I think I'm still going to try it even with the Lion bugs lol. I already have 2 (256gb) Vertex 3 SSDs just staring at me and an unopened Mini Server.

One last question, these new minis are Sata III 6/GBs, correct?

Yes they are.

Proof (in French). Check the "vitesse de la liaison" [= link speed] line.

Slack in sata cable

Phillip,

Is there enough slack in the sata cable to install the drive in the bottom bay?

No. Very sure about this.

Also putting in two drives while possible will require complete teardown not the shortcut slip it in method I did.

Since I don't have a server model I am not sure about the above statement. I may buy a server model and put in two ssd's If I do I will post photos.

Outstanding Post Philip! I'm going to wait for tax free weekend coming up and order an i7 non-server model. So glad to hear the 2011's have SATA 3!! Time to start shopping for the new sandforce SSD!

I just ordered a 2.5 from jr.com net cost was 769 see this link.

I think it may be close enough to the i7 and the price is right

You don't HAVE to clone the drive! The new mini will download osx over the net remember!

Does anyone know where to get compatible 2x4GB (8GB total) sticks for the Mac Mini?

I tried these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002YUF8ZG/

And the system wouldn't boot.

Crap! I ordered those sticks. That is really surprising to me that the memory is incompatible. Did you install them before you initially booted the system? Or after you set it up once?

Before initial boot. I will try again though. Could be bad sticks as well.

Please let us know. My set arrives tomorrow, if the sticks don't work I may just refuse delivery and go with the 2.5Ghz version w/4GB memory.

Of course. Not everyone wants to use up 4GB to re-install an OS.

While I can install via the net and have fast download of 15MB many others don't and the virgin clone is a very good work around. think fw800 external or even t-bolt

Phillip,

currently following your guide and tearing down this mini 2011. Im wanting to raid 2 ssd's. My question is, which Im not sure you know or not cause you don't have the server edition, how do I get this bottom hard drive out? The top one was just laying on it. But I can't seem to pry it out and I don't want to break it.

If you have any insight, I'd love to hear!

Oh one last thing,

on your hd removal and replacement, did you have to push the logic board out 1/2 inch like you did on the 2010 model?

Thanks in advance

The server will need logic board to be slide the 1/2 inch. There is no slack in the drives. since I did the non server This is a guess but I am 95 percent sure!!!!

what makes the non server easy is you don't need to slide the logic board out in order to pull the drive out the empty space under it gives you wiggle room!

Hi
I am thinking about making the new mini my first go at owning a mac, and have a couple of questions re mods.

- Does it matter what size or type of SSD I replace the standard drive with? (As long as it's 9mm+Sata3/6GB/s) If I used a larger SSD than 256GB, will it allow that? Or is everyone getting 256 cause that matches the one you could option when buying (for a lot of $$)

- I read above something about just putting the new SSD in and then it automatically connects to internet and downloads Lion (4GB is fine for me) - is it that simple? (obviously much slower than imaging of course)

thanks for any help, far

So long as SSD has enough space to run Lion it should work fine. You should get a drive that is known to work well with Macs.

I believe it's that simple. Take a look at http://www.apple.com/macosx/recovery/

won't work because the SSD is blank it doesn't have the hidden Lion recovery partition.
