Phillip,

I did the raid 0 install just like you said, (2) 256 OCZ Vertex 3's =)

You are right thought, Lion currently has a bug regarding RAIDs.

I installed them just find and rebooted and got to the apple screen which just turned to a circle with a slash through it.

So currently running fine on 1 SSD OCZ, but sure wish I could raid these badboys!

Thanks for the tutorial, every thing you said worked perfect. I love SuperDuper!

Looks like OWC is getting RAID to work...

"Like its predecessor, the 2011 Mac mini Server has two drive bays, which can see the drives individually or in a software RAID 0 or 1. We tested a pair of Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSDs set up in a RAID 0 inside the mini Server and achieved read/write speeds over 1000MB/s!"

Hey guys,

New on the forums, but letting you know I succesfully installed an Intel 510 120Gb and is working flawlessly for the last 48 hours.

P.s. when installing, mind the 2 srews at the back of the original HD. I forgot them and had to re-open it all... also wasnt nescessary to remove the antenna.

On addition I succesfully have working Corsair Ram (mind you, version 2)

Installation advice needed!

Quick question for those who have installed the SSD in place of the original Hard drive.

Like some, I've run into some issues getting the SSD to line up nicely with the chassis. I think I was accidentally trying to fit it into the bottom slot instead of the top slot. If I'm swapping the original HD with an SSD, it stays in the top slot, right? And any advice on getting it to seat nicely?

I thought I had this part figured out, until I tried to put the antenna grill back on. Then the two longer screws along the bottom wouldn't fit properly. The screw on the left, in particular, would make the SATA cable pop out every time I tried to screw it in. Any idea what I screwed up? Thinking I may have to take her apart and reseat the SSD, but any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the pics!

Quick question though.
What are you planning on using the mini for?
I am going to use it as an HTPC and store most of my media on it. I just cannot justify 400+ for a 256GB ssd. I could get an external, but an external wouldn't look as good sitting next to my tv compared to just the Mini.

I have an older mini but I never put my media on it I always streamed from the server in my computer room, that way its just the mini next to the tv, and I have far too much media for a 500 gb HD

I use the mini much the same I move all media to a synology nas. Other then about a 50gb iTunes music only on the ssd.

OCZ or OWC? Want to order TO-DAY! :)

Great thread! Thanks for the photos! I want to buy either an OCZ Vertex 3 or a Vertex 3 MAX IOPS Edition, which cost $220 and $280, respectively.

The OWC "6G" is of equal interest to me, so does anyone have any good or bad things to say about any of the above? Any recommendations? Pro's, con's, etc.? I take it that Mac OS X 10.7 Lion is compatible seeing that we're talking about the 2011 Mac mini?

Thank you! ;-)

buy the owc they are very fast with returns if it breaks.

Ok, I think that sounds like good advice. I was about to pull the trigger when I found out there are TWO difference 6G ones, one is the Electra and one's the Extreme Pro. Grr.. lol...The difference is $75. Is this worth it, or should I just go with the Electra? My goal is to eventually RAID them.

Thanks!

get the more expensive one it says it will do more raids then the cheaper one.

Thanks for this thread! I managed to replace the default drive with Vertex 3. A few observations I can share:

- After the replace I first thought something had gone wrong because internet recovery ("install mac os x lion") didn't recognize the SSD. Then did a second boot and before reinstalling I chose Disk Utility which showed the SSD => then erasing/formatting the SSD, boot, and reinstalling where SSD was now an option.

- Booting into internet recovey didn't succeed with the Apple wireless keyboard; had to use an usb pc keyboard where Windows-key + R worked.

- Besides this thread I found this guide useful: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Mac-mini-Model-A1347-Hard-Drive-Replacement/3113/1
I didn't need to do these steps: 10, 11 (I left antenna plate attached - it can reside flipped on the corner or the edge of the mac mini), 12, 13 (no need to move motherboard, no thermal sensor on the HDD), 15, 16, 20, 21 (no thermal sensor seen…).

- No 100 % need to take the memory chips away; I left the bottom chip attached.

- I made a plastic pry tool from a pen's pocket holder clip.

- HDD was quite hard/tight to lift/remove over the memory bank.

- Boot time (apple start sound -> login screen) before SSD (with the 500gb 5200rpm HDD) about 30 seconds, now with SSD about 14 seconds.

- I have another apple mini SATA cable coming so that I could also place the other HDD in the mac mini. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1201731/

good I am glad this helped you.

Hi,

Guys, do I need to put black plastic cover on y new ssd if it will be only one drive in my 2011 mac mini? Thanks.

as long as you have a sealed ssd and not an open backed one (I have never seen one like that) you don't have to put it back. look at the two thumbnails. the black plastic protects the pcb board on the stock apple hdd. the intel has a solid back does not need to be protected.

Since I resell my gear on ebay I place the plastic back so the buyer does not feel like it is missing.

I've installed my Crucial M4 ssd yesterday, had to pull back logic board slightly to fit this ssd in and it seems that everything works. Speed is fantastic. One more question - are you able to see temperature of ssd disk? I'm not. Is it expected?

back those bad boys up.

I have two Intel 520 series 240GB SSDs on my desk waiting to get into my MM i7 2.7 - preferably in RAID.

Before this I had a MM C2D 2.66 Server witch had Seagate Momentus XT in RAID0 in Lion without any problem....

What bug does Lion have regarding RAID?
