That is brilliant. Though, you guys do know why they changed it, right? It was because of the #DisarmTheiPhone campaign. The say every American has a gun without a background check, and that the gun is our emoji.Except that it’s not like the race emoji’s which allow them to reflect the sender. I guess a campaign could be started for that? That is brilliant. Though, you guys do know why they changed it, right? It was because of the #DisarmTheiPhone campaign. The say every American has a gun without a background check, and that the gun is our emoji.
Nobody has been shot or killed by this emoji, and nobody will be shot or killed by this emoji. If you dislike the gun emoji then do not use it. Please, bring it back.
Haha, #RearmTheiPhone. I like the idea of being able to hold down and change the "race" or "type" of gun. The default can be water gun, but we still can have a normal gun.I guess a campaign could be started for that?

If there is a kid that gets scared of seeing the gun emoji, then he or she should not have an iPhone, iPad, or MacBook. If this is the case, then you should get rid of the bomb, knife, etc. You also should get rid of the burglar guy, the gay pride flag (when I was in kindergarten the idea of a gay would have scared me way more than a gun), and the gay and lesbian emojis. Then again, times are changing.I’m not going to say I agree with that campaigns motives or not and until Apple says that’s why they made the change it’s only ONE possible reason. Another could be like I suggested, that it’s being used to bully kids. We know that children’s brains processes images differently than words. The same way that seeing a scary movie causes a stronger reaction that reading the same story in print. Either way I don’t care if there is or isn’t a gun emoji, but I don’t understand the view of some that think their opinion is the only one that’s “correct” or matters. We all got to get along and it’s impossible to make everyone happy every time.
Ultimately it's about putting it all in perspective: it's just an emoji. If there is a kid that gets scared of seeing the gun emoji, then he or she should not have an iPhone, iPad, or MacBook. Time for me to edit every Instagram post and delete every tweet that had the water gun emoji.
[doublepost=1470254624][/doublepost]Apparently Apple has said that the move is a small way that the company wants to stand up to the NRA's bullying tactics.
Yes, it is just an emoji. Why does it need to be removed. It is like their trying to start something.Ultimately it's about putting it all in perspective: it's just an emoji.
Plenty of other much bigger changes are made from version to version in iOS and other OSs. Most have more impact and some have discussions about them while others don't. Ultimately they are what they are based on what the software creator decides them to be (in this particular case of iOS it's Apple).Yes, it is just an emoji. Why does it need to be removed. It is like their trying to start something.
Going against Unicode? Isn't part of it that basically they provide what's included and then different companies that make use of it decide how they actually represent it?Not only that, they're going against Unicode with this dumb change. Don't you hate it when Samsung does it? There's no excuse for defending Apple this time.
On the other hand, similarly if a little silly cartoony emoji looking like a water gun vs. a "real" gun would really impact what people are saying in random texting, perhaps there's some re-evaluation of social communication that should be considered there? These guys are freaking stupid to waste their own time to remove a ****ing emoji, that cannot hurt a single person, and if it does, they don't deserve social communication. Sorry, that's just my $0.02...

But it's still up to different companies to provide their interpretation of it. A water pistol is a type of pistol it would seem.Unicode provides the official character names and codepoints. In this case character U+1F52B is called Pistol, not Super Soaker.

It fits in with a generic (cartoony/emoji) take on a gun/pistol, but, no, it doesn't quite fit in with that specific description of it. (That said, not sure why a cartoony emoji of a gun needs to convey something like "great harm".)http://emojipedia.org/pistol/
"A gun emoji, more precisely a pistol. A weapon that has potential to cause great harm."
Not really.
Bomb is still there though!Political correctness run amok - the revolver is now a squirt gun??? Really???
Yes, it is just an emoji. Why does it need to be removed. It is like their trying to start something.
Well, so is a gun technically speaking. Seems like the bomb emoji is probably already cartoony enough.Bomb is still there though!

They need to put ACME across it so I feel safer.Well, so is a gun technically speaking. Seems like the bomb emoji is probably already cartoony enough.
There's likely some of that there. But given that it's emoji, it's hardly meaningful one way or another. If we're gonna go that way then no, emoji isn't supposed to be cartoony. Hell, right now half of the emoji on the iOS keyboard aren't particularly cartoony.
No matter how you spin it, Apple is taking a lazy approach at social commentary, and I for one won't have any of it.
Well it's meaningful for me and many others because we use Emoji everyday, and particularly puts you in perspective because a company can change the meaning of a message at their will. There's likely some of that there. But given that it's emoji, it's hardly meaningful one way or another.
In a sense they can as they design what an emoji looks like. I mean it's still a gun so it still gets the general idea of it across. And given the essentially unimportant nature of something like emoji I guess that factors into it as well.Well it's meaningful for me and many others because we use Emoji everyday, and particularly puts you in perspective because a company can change the meaning of a message at their will.
