It’s about time government does something about big tech’s dominance over our lives and ever increasing control of the economy.
How does big tech dominate your life? It certainly doesn't mine. I have an iPhone and several other Apple devices, but they don't dominate my life. A government that controls what kind of connector you can have on a power cable and one up, that sounds more like something dominating your life.

I can’t even choose where to get software from on my phone. It’s the iOS App Store or nothing.

OMG that must be just devastating. How do you survive? I thought you were maybe dominated by some criminal gang and forced to work for no pay for them or even as a sex worker or something. Never imaged that it was worse that that, you could only download an app for your Apple phone from the Apple App store. Must be hard to sleep at night.

Have you forgotten the last 30 years of computer OSs? How do you think Microsoft handles Windows? Apple handles MacOS? They are both open. Apple says MacOS is secure, yet it allows these things that the EU is mandating for mobile devices.

Are you telling me that Apple can keep MacOS secure and not iPhone OS? Is that what you’re saying?
Apple execs have said multiple times they are not happy with MacOS security. But somethings are beyond their control.

I feel like this was always inevitable, and I feel like Apple knew it this whole time. Also feel like they've been prepping for it, and as soon as it's real and they have to allow third-party app stores... the App Store will launch on Android. It's gonna be weird times ahead.
Steve never wanted a third party App Store for exactly this reason. Apple is going to lose control over their own product.

I think the EU should drop this idea if Apple agrees to perpetually take no commission for app sales, IAP, developer accounts, unwind iAds, and stop pre-installing their services apps (Music, TV, Fitness+).

This way Apple can decide whether profit or platform integrity is the thing they care about.
That’s freaking hilarious. So they can’t take commissions at all but I’m guessing you want them to pay to maintain and facilitate app sales for developers to keep making their commissions free income?

Ok, so supposedly second blow.
I am the few who believes free market is dead and government intervention is required to restore the functionality of a market. Hoping bad player to be priced out is no longer applicable when business reaches a certain level.

Now, whether the intervention is good or bad needs time to tell. But no intervention is bad. I don’t like the idea megacorps mandating what we do on a daily basis through various means.

Before you guys scream “you have a choice”, let me introduce you to this: choice can be eliminated by pricing out smaller but more competitive players via those bigger players. Eventually, you will end up with monopoly (no choice) or duopoly (Phantom of choice). Look no further than mobileOS marketshare And see how much linux takes in the mobile market right now.
Lol Linux has low market share because the product sucks for 99% of people.

Good news!!! Apple advertises the Mac as secure yet has open app stores, side loading AKA installing whatever you want. What makes the iphone so different? NOBODY is forcing you to do these on your phone if you don’t want to.
i dont want to defend apple. im with EU and every law AGAINST apple. however main problem is that most critical apps like those involving money are fully functional only on phones. Pc its abandoned by every bank and i find this very stupid. Nowaday u can't make a money transfer using only a pc, as u must always confirm operations with something on the phone (app, or sms code). While u can do the same transfer by using phone alone. Basically, a device that u bring with u everytime and everywhere its capable to do everything, while a pc, that stays in a locked home cant do nothing. this is the reason, i think, its better to have a safe phone than a safe pc... unless something changes in this crazy world, but i doubt it...

I can just picture a few Germans sitting around their wood burning stove this winter to keep warm, grateful that the EU has mandated side loading apps and the use of the USB-C cable to plug in their phones. Anxiously waiting for either the wind to blow, or the sun to rise, so that that the electricity will come back on, and they can recharge the iPhone using the USB-C mandated cable. I heard there is an app out there you can side load, that gives you some locations to buy coal rather than wood to heat with! Again many thanks to the EU for looking out for me.
That's awesome.

The Mac is as safe as it can be but on more than one occasion Apple executives have recently said the Mac is not as safe as iOS, but the use cases are different and the expectations of privacy are greater in mobile.

It’s like I’m living in some bizarro world reading these comments that are biasly ignoring the fact that Apple keeps MacOS secure while allowing other app stores and applications to be installed w/o their permission.
Because this is a legacy system. Macs are not as safe and is not tethered to you all day and at constant threat from attacks in the wild or simple theft. Someone snatching your phone mid sentence to gain access to it

So you’re saying that there’s no security on MacOS and Apple is lying about it?
It's as if you don't know that things have degrees. Apple will tell you MacOS is secure (as desktop OS's go), but that iOS/iPadOS is more secure. So this change, though it would be good for me personally, would in turn make iOS/iPadOS less secure.

Which of their industries did they crush? They're the wealthiest continent, and if I recall correctly, they got the highest quality of life in all rankings, so they must be doing something right.
Lol what? The wealthiest continent? Based on what? Not on GDP. Europe is third. Highest quality of life in all rankings? What rankings are you referring to?

If it was up to Apple they'd keep iOS locked down and the iPhone and iPad would still be on lightning. Corporations won't do things out of the goodness of their heart, they do things to make money.
Apple chose to move the iPad to usb-c prior to this law and I think the only reason the iPhone doesn’t use it is because they wanted to avoid the ensuing tsunami of complaints about 3rd party devices no longer working due to them using the lightning port. Which is compounded by the fact they are probably only a couple of generations away from a portless device where now they will have to repeat the cycle of complaints again when the phone doesn’t have usb-c. Go EU. Your law will most likely be outdated before it even goes into effect.
