I'm going to send EU this Dongle Bingo and see what they will do with it.

Keep getting this same tired argument over and over again. It will be software companies forcing people to use other stores, by only offering their apps there, so they can ignore Apple’s safeguards, or get more money (you… you don’t actually expect they’re going to lower their prices, do you?).

This exactly, there are some really naive people out there.

People are free to quit Apple's products and services anytime they wish.
They are not really free. At the moment they can only choose between two evils: Apple, which treats them like kids who need strict rules on what they can do and what not and Google, which collects enormous amounts of private data from its users even if they choose the strictest privacy options that Google offers them. That's why we need government to regulate both Apple and Google. Apple needs to finally treat their customers like adults and give them access to nipples and Google needs to stop spying on its customers. Then the choice between to evils could turn into the choice between two good options.

SpaceX will fall under the gatekeeper rules, on both the launch side and the internet side. Interesting how that'll work. So will Boeing and Airbus.

Laws are there to keep the number of options for people high. Imagine a restaurant would not allow black people. Then you would probably argue that there are still enough options for black people where they could eat. That is not how it should work though. Instead all restaurants should be open for all colours. And all operating systems should be open for all apps.

Surely you didn't just compare racial discrimination to restricted app delivery did you? If anything was ever apples and oranges, that is.

Bring it on. It's not like you're being forced to sideload.
Oh but some people would like you to believe that and they're always the same people that think Android phones get a million viruses out of nowhere. It's very convenient of MacRumors to exist for us to be able to find these people.

The EU will conveniently punish Boeing and exempt Airbus.

iMessage is often barely interoperable with itself. So many syncing issues it’s unreal, and if you use a wired internet connection on your iPad then forget about it. Better off with two cups and a piece of string. The chance of Apple even having the ability to make it work across entirely different systems is roughly zero.

Yeah like also I am a gay man and idc personally if a bakery won’t bake my gay wedding cake. I can just move along and give a different bakery my business or make it myself if I have to. It’s, like, the free market, man. But still, likening side-loading legislation to discrimination based on race or anything else just seems kinda…weird….

Having one choice (Android) is not necessarily enough. Having alternative desktop operating systems in the 1990s wasn't enough choice and lead to a government lawsuit against Microsoft.
Android isn't one choice. It's multiple OSs from multiple manufacturers on multiple hardware designs with multiple app stores and multiple features. But we've already had this conversation before. Feel free to read through our previous conversation to avoid going around in circles again! :)

What android has taught us is that despite all of those choices, almost all consumers prefer to get their apps from a single app store. With just a small percentage that bother with sideloading or alternative app stores.

Beisdes, these EU regulations won't prevent iPhone customers from still choosing not to sideload or still choosing not to use alternative app stores. It is expanding choices, not taking away choices.
Same old argument that's been refuted a number of times in this thread already. Again, it's both taking away choices and adding different choices. Some of us prefer the benefits of a single app store.

To me, this isn't the issue. The issue is this should be Apple's decision (or any other company's decision), not the decision of any political body.
The job of the government is to regulate... without them, everything would be up to the companies.

This is absolutely within the purview of the government, and it absolutely shouldn't be Apple's choice because we already know they wouldn't comply because they want to monopolize the App Store rather than allow proper competition to it.

The EU is welcome to subsidize an EU based competitor.

Sure they are free to leave. They can use Google. Again, no one is forced to use Apple's products.

Of course, you gave the valid reasons not to use Google, but still, Google and their hardware/software products do exist.

Also, your entire diatribe about Google makes no sense when you consider that many people using Apple's platforms willingly use Google products on those platforms.

I will concede that having an duolopy for tech is not the best, but market forces worldwide have spoken loud and clear: it is either Google or Apple.

As long as the someone who sideloads first agrees that any harm suffered by the user or to the phone, is the responsibility of the user. With no Apple responsibility or liability.

In other words, sideloading is at your own risk.
Great. So just have us do the same song and dance macOS makes us do when you install an app from a non-recognized source. This all already exists. Glad to see your main interest is with keeping apple safe. 🙄

Third. Behind China. And “Europe” as defined by Apple includes all European countries (even those outside the EU), India, the Middle East, and Africa. So that ENTIRE region is 19% of revenue. Wonder how much the EU makes up?
So they suck at geography, no wonder Apple Maps also sucks. 🤣

If it was up to Apple they'd keep iOS locked down and the iPhone and iPad would still be on lightning. Corporations won't do things out of the goodness of their heart, they do things to make money.
You’re missing the point.

Obviously Apple would not do this voluntarily, because it doesn’t benefit them.

My problem with Apple being forced to do it is that what else could they be forced to do?

It is all nice when governments force Apple to do something that we want, but it sets a dangerous precedent. What if the next thing the EU wants is to put a back door into Apple’s OS.
