that is fantastic!

I do animation at college and i have to say... bravo. I'd love to know the company that made that ad.

I wonder if this'll replace their annual promo that they make...

It'll be a shame if it does because I really liked last years

Woww.... that was freeeken awesome... I mean I like the new ad... its cute and all... but this one was just awe inspiring... that add should win an award!

I know! That's the best thing about it!
How many kids today don't understand and appreciate what Rankin/Bass was all about and just consider Rudolph, Santa Claus is Coming to Town and The Life and Times of Santa Claus as mere cartoons?!

I would take the art form of Rankin/Bass over ANY cartoon today. It's pure craft!

I grew up during the Rankin/Bass too. I only look forward to Santa Clause is Coming to Town and Rudolph every year. With all the fancy technology we have today and even the power the Macintosh has nothing beats the Rankin/Bass claymations.

It's cool to see there are others on this forum who grew up during that time and appreciate it. I thought MR was only full of pimpled faced 12-15 year olds. :D

UUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRK horrible, how can you guys find it cute, i think this is an embarrassment to all that apple stand for; 'Cool'.
yeah Im starting to agree. I think Apple should start being a little more selective with there ads now. The last clever one was the "Don't Give Up on Vista" ad...and enough of that terrible iPhone medley, so sick of it that I turn the TV volume down now.

This ad made me drop a deuce in my bed.

*rolls eyes* For those who don't get it, the highly chastized original.

EDIT: apparently, all the criticism of this post is now gone. Whatever.

Wow.... Amazing! Does anyone know what song that is, or if it's an original?

One of the best in the campaign..

Anyone complaining about it "not being cool" is seriously missing the point. It's you who needs to get over your insecurities ("embarrassing to watch?"), not Apple who has to play thing by the book.. Most ads are so predictable and boring.. Was *anyone* expecting this? Didn't think so.

This is cute. Apple have a sense of humour. That's a *good* thing.

I wonder if they'll do any more stop-frame stuff.

Like the little guy with glasses in the UK halifax ads who went CG and doesn't seem to go away. Scary.

Harrupmph....non-pimpled-faced-15-year-old-here. :D ...and I only post on THIS website 'cause no matter what the age between the girls and boys, it's the most mature, well moderated forum ev-ah.

My vote for the ad: Meh. Cool concept (the old Rankin/Bass nod some of us grew up with) but execution and script - didn't do a thing for me.

I liked it. It didn't make me laugh, but it did remind me of the old claymation style cartoons I used to watch around Christmas time when I was a kid. Good times.

nice find!
I'm adding it to my podcast right now.

i encourage you to check out my podcast: here (iTunes)...
or the online version of the podcast here..

It has almost 200 Apple related commercials from over the years.
(kind of like a modern macTV)

Thanks for sharing...nice...

I'm wondering why the PC guy is fat, in real life he isn't. Subtle way of making "PC" less attractive

Fat? What are you talking about? The character has a pretty small waist for a fat guy. Compare to Santa standing next to him. I think it's supposed to represent wide shoulders which is an accurate caricature of the PC guy, especially compared to the Mac guy.

I honestly find a lot of this over-thinking of these ads (or any ads for that matter) to be both humorous and creepy.

Its incredibly superficial, but he's not exactly a svelte in shape dude on the commercials. By design as you point out.

They must have conducted an awfully extensive search to find someone who was both fat enough to look bad, like a PC should, AND a good enough writer to CREATE the commercials ;)

The last apple ad I found amusing was the PR one. Everything they've come out with since, it doesn't even bring a smile to my face. Ah well, maybe my sense of humour died.

:)

Replacing the live 'feuding' characters with clamation is just a rip off of the Alltel Wireless commercials that have been shown in the US for almost 2 months. Way to be original Apple ::rolls eyes::

Meh, not my favourite.

But I've recently discovered that, as much as I think John Hodgman is awesome as PC, I like the UK ads better. If anyone needs some New Mac Ad goodness, and hasn't seen the UK ads yet, go, watch. Even the ones that are just remakes of the North American version, they're funny.

"and you can see here, we've further divided Hijinks into Capers, Monkey Business, and... just Larking About."

Awesome!

or

"Office at Home"
Mac: Your house sounds like a lot of fun, what, do I have to "clock in" for supper?

PC: Oh.... you're coming for supper....?

I definitely get the feeling that folks over in the UK don't really like this ad. I don't think the original cartoon from which they were made has been as popular over there and hence there is a bit of a cultural divided between the North American viewers and the UK ones contributing to this. To "get" the ad, you really have to have grown up with the originals.

I don't get it... must be for the above reason

Some would say it's an homage to classic Christmas animations such as Rudolph. I suppose it wasn't shown much overseas, but most Americans over 30 remember the style of the originals and associate it with Christmas in particular.
