I'm curious ... does anyone here have the 27" i7 with 16gb of ram installed? have you had it installed for more than 2 days?

The reason why I ask is because I had two different i7's and 4 different brands of RAM. No matter what, 16gb of ram would eventually cause my iMac to randomly shut down. Other users on Apple's forum has the same issues. Lnks to threads are below.

Anyone have 16gb of ram installed and can report no issues? I actually sent both my iMac's back and bought a Mac Pro. There is something that wont allow the max amount of ram installed. Maybe a firmware problem? Hopefully Apple will fix it.

I put 16GB of OWC memory in mine and it worked fine when initially installed. After a while, 2 of the modules would not show up and I was left with only 8GB. They have been returned and I have not received the replacements yet. I don't recall having any other issues.

I went through 4 sets of OWC memory, and all had issues. Not to make you worry but I would be shocked if you put 16GB of OWC memory in it and have no issues. Keep in mind, it takes 2-4 days for the issues to show up. Once the system gets acclimated to the modules it starts to shut down, screen turns off, kernal panics, etc.

I have yet to find one person who has 16GB installed of third party memory without issues. Not saying it effects everyone but I went through 2 different brand new iMacs, plus 5 sets of 16GB memory. Some from OWC, some from Crucial and some from Mac Ram Direct. All did the same thing after 2-4 days.

I called Apple about it and their response was "well we dont support third party ram" . Even though the stuff from Mac Ram Direct has the same part number as the stuff apple sent, Hynix Brand.

I bought the same machine on 09/04. On 09/08 I replaced the factory DIMMs with 16GB purchased from Ramjet. In the first three days, I had one unobserved, and one observed system shutdown for no apparent reason. Since then, zero problems.

I am apparently one of the lucky ones..... No dead pixels, no clattering hard drives, no slow ripping from CD/DVD, no backlight seepage, etc.

I've bought from Ramjet in the past and had trouble with DIMMs one time. They replaced them promptly without any problems.

Hope this helps somehow....

Wow, glad to hear it didn't continue. For me and others the shut downs continue and actually get worse. Did you have all the latest software updates from apple?

Yessir - the machine is fully patched. I haven't even reseated the DIMMs since those first two unexplained shutdowns.

I leave the computer on all the time as I frequently access it remotely. So all seems well. I just checked the memory in system profiler, and all show OK.

Ramjet makes this claim - of which I have no idea whether it's real or marketing fluff - but perhaps their is a difference?

"Non-Stacked IC's: Ramjet uses a Non-stacked module for the 4GB DDR3-1333 module for the iMac. The cheaper stacked IC variety of 4GB SO-DIMM draws more power, which increases heat and decreases battery life. Ramjet ONLY uses premium non-stacked chips."

Clearly, there is no battery in an iMac - so they likely stole the language from the laptop category - but perhaps the remainder of the claim is relevent?

I'm waiting for mine to be shipped, and can't wait! If I remember, I'll post again once it's here, hopefully to report no problems!

Just got my first ever mac today (i7 of corse) and i haven't tested the screen yet and probably never will as what i plan to use it for wont demand a perfect screen, but from first glance it looks great. HDD is very quiet as well. overall i'm super happy!

My first imac is being delivered today. For those with "One to one" did you set up your computer at home first to make sure everything is ok or did you take it down to the store without setting it up so they could do the data migration?

I actually have the full 16GB of DDR3-1066 RAM installed right now, which I was also running on my last iMac (27" Core i3 version) for about 2 weeks.

When I upgraded to the 27" iMac w/ the i7, I initially ran 8GB of the slightly faster DDR3-1333 memory, which is plenty, but I ran out of gas with my virtual machines. With the 16GB installed, Windows 7 running inside a VM runs incredibly well now that I have 8GB dedicated to it alone.

And yes, it has been more than 2 days. In fact, System Profiler says I've had my iMac on for exactly 3 days and 6 1/2 hours at the time of posting. I'm using 4x4GB RAM chips from IBM. They are labeled "hynix" I think. Apple uses the same ones I believe and I have two other sets of 16GB DDR3-1066 if you need it.

I hope this helps.

It's good to hear that there are mostly good iMac's coming out of Apple these days. Please report back after you have had a chance to take a closer look at your new baby! :D It took me four tries to get my "perfect" machine and now, I only wish I could get one of my solid state drives installed into mine. I prefer my Intel X25-M 160GB SSD's over those that Apple uses and I simply cannot justify to myself the exorbitant premium that Apple charges for the benefit.

HI!, Maybe a Stupid Question, but Should I really buy a "i7" or the "i5" will be just enough?

I wanted the 21.5" but that one doesnt come with the i7.

My latest iMac (#6) has moderate yellow tint issues. No testing necessary. When reading your post, in the beginning the background color was a yellowish/brownish white. By the time I got to the end of your sentence, the background became a Blueish white.

We have had a 2.93 i7 for a week now and love it. We have 8gb of ram and it smokes. Very nice. It looks good to the naked eye so I dont want to run the yellow tint test since it seems good to me now. I dont want to know it has some slight imperfection then I will think about it all the time.

Coming from Windows since windows 95 days I am learning to understand and really favor the OS here. It is so nice, but I still dont know how to do simple things like select multiple items and move them. Like I want to download torrents and then select them from the download stack and move them to music or movies but cant figure it out.

Advice on settings for Sims 3. My wife plays it a lot, using the archtecture features and builds towns. We came from a similar system from Dell and it ran really smooth. I dont know what settings to put this on to make it smooth as its studdery. I assumed even though the mac isnt a gaming machine per se with theis i7 and 8gb of ram it should handle a non-hardcore game like sims 3 more smoothly. It could be my settings. If anyone here plays it and could make some suggestions I would appreciate it. Boy it gets hot too when we play it.

Almost no question is stupid. In this case, you will know the answer to your question, as it depends entirely on what you use it for and if you want to "future-proof" your new iMac.

In my case, the Quad Core i5 2.8GHz would have been more than enough. I just figured that the i7 would have a better resell value and by that I don't just mean the difference in price that Apple charges. Most people who want the highest-end machine will want to go for the i7 instead of the i5. I also knew that I would be doing some serious virtulization and it didn't hurt that I got $20 off either. lol

So what are you wanting to do with your iMac?

WTF, really? Can you take a picture of your #6? Where can I get this screen test tool anyway? My #4 is perfect (ferrociously pounding on wood) but I'd still like to see what that test looks like.

By the way, was the screen always the problem with your #1 through #5?

Well, this is my first post and I'm extremely stoked about it being my first mac product; a crazy fast i7 2.93Ghz iMac with 4 gigs of ram (definitely going to upgrade that to 8gb) and the 1tb hard drive. Like everyone else before me, I've been checking my fedex tracking number like crazy and weirdly, it hasn't even updated its location since it shipped out of California Friday, but I opted for two day shipping so it "should" be here some time soon. Ahhh, tomorrow will be a great day indeed whenever it comes :).

running choppy?

I've always used windows since 98 and have had relatively few problems. I have ios devices and enjoy them and so I bought a new imac quad core i7 2.93ghz. It has 1tb, 1 gb 5750 gddr5 gpu, 27" screen. Its gorgeous. However, my wife likes to play Sims 3 with all the expansion packs, and use the architectural design aspects of it. My Dell xps 8100 handles the game like melted butter-smooth and easy. The imac which is a similar to the i7 860 dell, having a 2.93 i7 plays it not nearly as well. I have to run resolution down to 1080p from its higher native, and put most settings on medium without a.a. It still is a bit choppier than the Dell which cost half as much. This is not COD MW2 or CRYSIS, its Sims 3 with all 4 expansion packs. I have a few more days to take back my imac and wondering if ther is a setting I can adjust or just realize this is par for the course in apple land? Any suggestions. I shouldnt have to put Sims three on medium settings on a high end 2.93 i7 quad core. THat is sad.

Just checking in to confirm the arrival of my new 2.93 i7. No screen issues as far as I can tell, and no start-up issues. Don't notice the 1TB HDD spinning, which I know has been an issue with some.

I hope to put it through its paces shortly, encoding BDs through Handbrake.

Doesn't the XPS 8100 have a better video card and more RAM?

yes the new imac i7 2.93ghz scores 10700 in 64 bit mode

The highest score for the 2.93GHz Quad-Core i7 iMac on Geekbench is 10910.

I have a 2009 model 2.93GHz Quad-Core Mac Pro, I currently have the highest score for this model Mac Pro on Geekbench (MacPro4,1 with the 2.93GHz W3540 chip), and my score is 10434.

I think the reason that the new iMac is faster than the Quad 2.93GHz Mac Pro is due to 1333MHz memory and non-ECC based memory, which can cause a slight slowdown. The new iMac is about 4.56% faster than the 2.93GHz Mac Pro.

Wow, this sucker's fast! It screamed through an high-def encode from a BD rip at a framerate faster than the movie itself! Impressive, but I have not yet mentioned that it was ripping another BD and downloading an HD TV show (Top Gear) all at the same time.

It's a beast. I love it.

How are you ripping a blu-ray onto your iMac?
