I'll get 8GB or RAM another day, it was another £760 for it, I'm betting on crucial doing it for a lot less soon enough.

Edit:
I just check the Ram on crucial only £630.19 for the 8GB :)

Cancelled my order. It's worked out only a tiny amount more to get the Mac Pro and get 8GB of RAM from crucial and a Dell 24 inch Monitor... Plus it's being delivered a month earlier :)

Is that figuring in the RAM upgrade to 8gb? I guess the iMac memory costs way more then the Mac Pro.

Yes and not from Apple either.

iMac 8GB £815.34
Mac Pro 8Gb £163.28

Massive difference in RAM.
Funny thing is I checked the RAM yesterday and it was £600ish yesterday but today crucial want more!

At £652.06 I can buy a 24inch Monitor and half twice the processing power :)

That's because in iMac there's 2 x 4GB and in Mac Pro 4 x 2GB. 4Gb sticks are way more expensive than 2Gb. That's the reason

I find this hard to believe.

hello Bryan, sorry for the late reply!
I wasnt expecting this from apple either... I keep calling them, and they say that the finance department is busy now, but they will leave a note to call me in 24 hours.. I call during the next 25th hour, the same thing happens.. for some reason they are ignoring me..
Finally I found out from my bank that they did release the money, but instead of being instant, it will take it 5 days to appear in my account just because apple chose so
I'm looking for somewhere to post feedback, or a number to call, something that will help me understand why they r cancelling my order.. 24'' are not so easy to be carried home from the nearest applestore (im a student, with no car available)

First time iMac user. I ordered the 2.93 Ghz upgraded with a GT130 video card. I ordered on the 11th, received it this morning on the 17th.

It was worth the wait! The screen is gorgeous and I can't wait to start some real work on the iMac.

Cheers

I figured I'd get more longevity if I went with the entry level Mac Pro, with the new architecture, Snow Leopard around the corner, more cores etc. Plus the better GFX with the 4870 (which is upgradable). Another reason is storage. With the iMac, I'd have to use an external HDD enclosure via FW800 (which would be snappy for most) but I intend to be moving large amounts of video across the system, so an internal SATA2 bus would be a lot faster.

I'd miss the all-in-one idea and the quietness of the iMac, but it would be a slight compromise from day one and I'll notice that even more as time goes on I think. This is purely from my usage forecasts and most people will be more than happy with an iMac.

It's going to cost more obviously, especially as I'd want a new display to go with the new Mac, which means the LED Cinema Display.... My existing 20" Dell would be a second monitor. I could use the MDP to DVI adaptor and run a second 20" Dell, but the LED CD is eye candy I can't resist.

Going from the entry level C2D Mac mini to Nehalem Mac Pro will be a nice jump in performance!

Oh... Me too :)

I agree with your logic. The Mac Pro is a far more capable platform and has far more longevity since the platform is infinitely more upgradable than iMac. I had been looking at an ATI equipped iMac that would have run ~$2000. I can alternatively order a 2.66 quad Mac Pro + 4870 + 24" ACD for about $3200 (with discount). $1200 more in cost is a lot of money but probably means a machine I can use for a 3-5 year period of time as opposed to 1-2 years.

I came to this conclusion myself but opted not to jump in with a $3000 Mac Pro purchase out of the gate. I've ordered a Mac Mini + Ram for now and will order a Mac Pro after Snow Leopard ships if Snow Leopard delivers on most of the tantalizing claims we are hearing about.

Ideally I'd be happier if the Mac Pro tray allowed people to add a second processor to allow for even greater expansion... Still by the time I'd be craving for twice the power, there'd be 16 or 32 core processors out there

All that remains is for me to pull the trigger... :apple:

Depends where you live. My carrier was UPS but no I have to send it back because of dead pixel and it'll be TNT who picks it up.

I ordered from a local independent Apple dealer herein Boise, rather than via Apple, but they say the same thing as Apple's site when it comes to the BTO with the ATI card. Now that I have ordered the thing, I am getting really antsy!

2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM
640GB Serial ATA Drive
ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB

This is my first iMac. It is the base 2.93GHz with the ATI upgrade. I am selling of a PC to help pay for the thing. It is a gaming PC, and I just don't game that much on the thing. The iMac will play WoW and Diablo III well enough, I am sure. Not much else on the horizon I am interested in when it comes to Windows gaming. And, if it does, I can Boot Camp it.

I already have the new 24" LED display that I use with my 15" MacBook Pro, so chances are I will just swap that over to the new iMac. Combined with Teleport, should be a nice setup.

Hellhammer, I had a 2 year old iMac that I gave my Granddaughter and a macbook. Never any problem with the "dead pixel" It does seem to be a problem a lot of people are experiencing. What exactly is it (I assume the LED for the pixel does not work) and it is very obvious when you look at it the first tme?

Thanks,

Oh, there's a mistake in my post, I have STUCK pixel, not dead.

It's a pixel which doesn't move, it's always red or other color (if it's stuck) but if it's dead it's black. Stuck pixels can be fixed if you have luck but dead ones can't. I tried fixing it with rapidly flashing colors but it didn't help.

It's very small but noticeable and annoying. This machine is just a week old so I don't accept those and will send this back to Apple.

It seems to be problem with just released ones. It can be the manufacturer's fault (Apple doesn't make displays) or maybe Apple switched to cheaper one here's the result
