If you need to connect a lot of things to a computer how can that computer be an ALL-in-ONE? "All" implies everything.

The name implies that the computer has ALL which is needed put into ONE device.

If you want to connect a lot of devices, a regular desktop computer would be better.
This is tongue-in-cheek… right? I mean… you can’t be serious?

I have a TB dock with a card reader that adds more ports than I care including a card reader. I’m sure someone will come up with some stylish new iMac friendly dock as well. I still feel having a card reader on the MBP line would be nice again but I’ve made my peace there.

Having said that, 24" doesn't do it for me after using 27" for so many years. If I were in the market for a new iMac right now (I'm not because I just bought an almost-maxed-out Intel 5k last year), I'd probably actually get a maxed out Mac Mini and a third-party 30"+ 4k monitor. . . . or wait until they introduced a larger iMac, but patience is hard, LOL!
I want a larger iMac screen. Fingers crossed for 32".

My first reaction was that the chin is too big and I'd have preferred smaller bezels, but I care a lot more about performance and I know the new iMac will meet my needs in that department.

I'm serious.

What is the purpose of an AiO?
What is the purpose of a desktop computer which is not an AiO?

Some of the reasons for an AiO to exist is to reduce cable clutter, ease of setup, keep a tidy desk/surface. When you buy an AiO you expect to get everything you need in one package or else the name doesn't make sense.

By attaching a lot of devices to an AiO (including extra screens) you are almost transforming it to a "desktop computer which is not an AiO". So why not just buy a regular desktop which seems much more suited to such tasks?

Because a well-designed AIO with the right peripherals will be a better machine than a separate box + monitor and the same peripherals. Especially with the new iMac. The quality of monitor in this AIO is better than the monitor you could get for the same price in a mini+monitor+keyboard+ mouse sourced separately.

really and truly, adding peripherals to an AIO is not that big of a deal.

I actually agree ... including a USB/thunderbolt hub to get every type of port you want 😎

However I do agree with some of the criticisms in this thread that Apple limiting the ports on the lowest end iMac is them being cheap, especially not auto-including the Ethernet port on the power brick.

Seriously, I think a nice chocolate brown back, with a tan/beige front could be a really attractive option, too. Toss in a deep black back with grey front as another nice possibility.

If they did something like this, I wouldn't be hemming and hawing about which color to get. I'm actually surprised they didn't, given how trendy brown is with young people. And more than any other color, it would actually look like it's something that blends in with homes. There is so much pent up demand for earth tones.

Reminds me of the Zune for some reason; not a complaint as I liked that sickly green-brown color. Very 2006.

Interesting — that looks pretty nice. I’m just not sure if the world is ready to give beige tones another chance after their run in the 90s.

I see no reason why Apple couldn’t try out some earth tones on their iPhones one year. Since they update every year, it wouldn’t be that big of a gamble. A little different with desktops or laptops.

Me too. Green here. Looks awesome. For some reason when I first saw it I was reminded of this old commercial for a much clunkier old iMac:
I so desperately wanted this iMac. I never got one because I needed a gaming machine that only Windows could provide. But when we went to Fry’s or Circuit City, I would make a beeline to these displays and just stand there longing.

What, no logo on the chin?

What, no logo on the chin?

I prefer it with no logo. A $10,000 refrigerator has no logos on the front, but Samsungs and Maytags do. Nearly every product at Design Within Reach has no logos. None of my furniture has logos, I don’t know why I need my computer to. The logos are to benefit the companies, not me. I’m not looking to broadcast a company’s logo or stare at one all day. My favorite sneakers (Common Projects) don’t have a logo. Just about every Yeezy sneaker hides the logo where it’s hard to see, and the designs are iconic without relying on logos. Compared to a Nike where they slap a giant logo on the side, which looks way more pedestrian. A surface can just be blank imo. I really don’t know how a logo benefits me. Imagine putting logos on dishes, pots, and vases because the blank surface feels too plain. People who design products for the home usually know to put logos on the bottom and let the object just exist. When designers add logos, it’s to invade the users’ space with their business goals.

If you look at any image from Dwell or Architectural Digest, you’ll see no logos. These new iMacs fit in better with elegant home designs than the previous ones.

Absolutely agree that more ports are needed. I have a lot of different input devices because I swap them out to avoid RSI. All of them use USB A, so I am annoyed.

I'm sorry, the white bezel is ugly as fck. Rest of the machine is beautiful only to be spoiled by the white bezel. Absolutely terrible

A simple 4 slot port would solve your problems and would be more ergonomic than plugging into the back. I got mine for a few dollars from Amazon. USB A to C adapters are also useful and cheap.

Four? lol. That's what I have now and it isn't even close to optimal.

Yeah, I know amazon is a thing too.

It has definitely grown on me as well. May pull the trigger on one when a few more of my apps get updated to the ARM architecture. have a M1 Mini and do very much enjoy it although it has some issues like waking up from sleep and random WiFi drops. I'm sure these will be resolved at some point.

You make an excellent point and are 100% correct, I've never noticed this before.

It’s interesting the Verge review notes there seems to be quite a lot of enthusiasm for the new colourful iMacs. Normal people (not the specialist mr crowd) seem to like the design.

I also saw an interesting video segment about the design language of the chin. It seems to have been around for such a long time in one form or another that it is considered ‘iconic’ and a visual identifier that the device is not just a tv display panel or monitor but a computer. Maybe Apple did something smart by keeping it, and personally I don’t mind it.

The thing that I liked most about the whole package after watching some of the unboxing and early reviews is the attention to detail… the colour matched handle on the box, matching cables, matching accessories and even highlight colour in the OS. It really just made me say, “ooh shiny, i want one”.
