Are they still going to rip us off with 64GB base storage and have the only upgrade option be 256GB which is overkill for many people. Why not offer a 128GB version?

I like the iPad but the line up is a mess.
Wait what? 64GB is a complete unusable ripoff, but 256GB is way too much, overkill. I swear every Apple person thinks their exact niche is what should be the standard for all. Its weird. Just like the tiny phone people spamming the whole internet that they need an iPhone Mini, and then nobody buys one. Really loud people making demands that their population can’t support on the manufacturing/pricing end.

Sounds like 64GB is a good entry point for people who don’t rely on local data. 256GB seems like the next logical step up, as someone who needs local data is quickly going to hit the ceiling on some weird half step like 128GB.

Its pretty standard in the industry. Many net devices use 64GB and budget laptops use 256GB. 128GB is this pointless no-mans land that helps neither the super budget user or the user that needs local data support. I am sure there are plenty of people in this weird niche where they have just enough data to pass 64GB, but have been sitting under 128GB for a couple years, that they can make some noise… but not enough people to actually be worth catering too. Still here they are making their demands. As if a company that tries to streamline and minimize their product line is going to just start pumping out every spec bracket just for their little circle… and then tick off the other weird cult that shouts “this isn’t the Apple way! We need to delete all the iPads and just release one iPad model, thats what Steve would have done!”

Love Apple. Many people do as evidenced by their rise to the top of the world. But the weird little vocal minority groups are always a little annoying. Heck in the last few years, Apple products have actually been useful an acceptable to the general public and that is probably the reason they are taking off so well, because the company isn’t listening to the conservative cult minority of voices.

absolutely. The fact that Apple still thinking 64gb is acceptable is gross. I love Apple products but I cannot stand Tim Cook.

Also *cries in wanting an iPad mini 7*

Well of course that's the point. They don't think it's acceptable and so they push you towards the upgrade. They've been this way for a long time but it's getting more obvious.

I wasn't expecting the iPad Air this soon. Anyhow, I am hoping for three entry level storage tiers for the different classes of iPads. However, I'm thinking the prices will rise if they increase the base storage tiers:

US$899 - 256 GB - iPad Pro
US$649 - 128 GB - iPad Air
US$549 - 128 GB - iPad mini
US$449 - 64 GB - iPad
US$329 - 64 GB - Old iPad

This makes too much sense for consumers and not enough cents for Tim.

Well, my predicted price list includes base price increases for 3 classes of iPads:

+US$100 - iPad Pro
+US$50 - iPad Air
+US$50 - iPad mini
+US$0 - iPad
+US$0 - Old iPad

Furthermore, having a 128 GB base iPad Air would push the upsell from the 64 GB iPad.

Is that still a problem until now?

I went with the 256GB 2018 iPad Pro 11" because it was 64GB then 256GB... is that a form of price psychology?

When do we get a new (larger) $329 iPad? I just like having a bigger screen in bed to watch YouTube/whatever before bed. I don’t need all this fancy processing power.

Steady now there... You'll provoke the "If you don't like it, tough luck" brigade. "Spend the money to upgrade to 256GB and if you don't like it, nobody is forcing you to buy Apple." And don't even think of criticising things like base model RAM offerings on Macs etc. Remember, you are not allowed to say things like this, because it means you are clearly an Apple hater and should not be commenting on this forum... Go and buy a Samsung etc.

As for the rational-thinking people who like Apple products, but hate this sort of thing and realise it is okay to criticise things, you are quite right.

128GB is the sweet spot for me, not because I use space just shy of that mark, but because this is the next step Apple offers that is higher than 64GB, which is not enough anymore. For 64GB to be enough, you have to mind the way you use the device, whether you will sync certain data or not, how long it will be before you reach the limit and you can no longer add new data like photos etc. When I use my iPad "normally", meaning I have some photos and music but nothing extravagant, I don't install many apps and I don't play games on it, I use iCloud and still ran out of space for an iOS update when a bug counted the space used by my music library as double. This is a clear sign that in this day and age 64GB is not sufficient unless your usage is light, so for an iPad Air 64GB should no longer be the base spec.

I actually wouldn't be at all surprised to see the Air go to 128GB base storage, because there is enough differentiators between the Air and Pro - OLED, ProMotion and M3 vs M2. It's time to make this move even judging by Apple's standards, since the Pro is gaining more advantages over the Air.

It's Apple. They won't offer 128GB as they want people to pay extra for the 256GB variants.
The iPad Pro already offers 128 GB for the base model. I'm thinking that will be boosted to 256 GB soon (albeit probably with a price hike).

Furthermore, the iPad Air originally shipped with base 16 GB, and now ships with base 64 GB. Apple boosts base storage from time to time (even if we sometimes think those boosts are too slow to come). Once the iPad Pro goes to a base 256 GB, a base 128 GB iPad Air would be perfect as the middle tier between the 64 GB iPad and 256 GB iPad Pro.

Apple should get rid of the standard iPad. Just have a mini, Air and Pro options. Or combine the mini into the Air line and have three sizes of iPad Air . Also the Air should be offered up to 1TB of storage. Not everyone wants or needs the Pro features.

If they finally included FaceID with the iPad Air.....I'm in.
??? The iPad Air already has Face ID. Error

The standard iPad sells a lot of units. It would be a huge mistake to delete the standard iPad line.

Rubbish! 64GB is a joke. These days it costs Apple (and others) almost nothing to have 128 vs 64. Nobody (I think) is suggesting they offer 64 and 128 and 256 models. The point is it would cost them almost nothing more in terms of making the device to start at 128. However, it is obvious to everyone objective that the whole point of them going from 64 then to 256 is about manipulating demand for various models and screwing people over. It is nothing at all to do with these being the two ideal amounts to offer from a consumer's point of view.

Now, I am quite prepared to accept that all companies are out there to make money, so Apple is not alone in this, and they can and will do whatever they can get away with (sometimes the supposed "haters" forget this). However the more people who do not call this out, but rather back it, the longer it goes on and we all get ripped off. Do not think for a moment that Apple execs are not thanking their lucky stars every day that people are not only prepared to buy 64BG storage or 8GB RAM or whatever in 2024, but that some people are so blinkered that they actually come out and actively support this as if it is somehow good for consumers.

I don't support it either, but then again 64 GB is totally fine for my wife and kids. At the entry level, it's fine... for the standard iPad. My wife and kids are perfectly fine with that tier of product. For the more expensive iPad Air though, I think they will move to 128 GB sooner rather than later. However, I also think they may raise the price by fifty US bucks.

It just means that a person would buy the same size in the iPad Air. I would never buy a standard iPad cause it lacks certain features like the anti reflective coating and such on the screen that the others have. I would get the air. Apples whole product lineup is too big and weird. The iPhone has too many offerings as well.
