Well, yesterday, I did a nuclear wipe of my iPad. I put it in DFU mode and set it up as a new ipad. So far so good. No issues.

I just joined to say that I have experienced something like this with my 10.5". It's happened maybe four or five times in the few months that I've had it, that I will try to wake it and it will stay dark. Nothing rouses it but a hard reset with home+power. I think it was happening before I bought a smart cover. I thought it was an iOS 11 beta issue, but it kept happening after the public release. The last time was a few days ago. Not a huge problem, just peculiar.

This was happening on my new 12.9” iPad Pro and I read on here to change in Settings>General>Accessibility>Display Accommodations>Auto Brightness (turn off). Since doing that a few months ago, no problems with waking my iPP.

Done this , but still happening on iPad Pro 12.9 2017 edition.it happened 6 to 7 times since 2 months I bought it and always happen in landscape mode .

Same thing here on a 12.9 2017 model.

Has happened about four times. I don’t have a cover yet but I found plugging the charger in wakes it up every time.

My IPP 10.5 is about three months old, and I have had the problem three or four times. Have always been able to bring back display by reclosing and opening Smart Cover. No problems of any sort during operation.

Update... so I had my original iPad 12.9 replaced due to the unresponsive touch screen issue. Not only is that issue present on my new one after a few weeks, but for the first time in a long time, I had this thread's issue occur where the backlight doesn't turn on.

Apple, you make both the hardware and the software. What the hell is going on?

Since 2017 it seems you need to upgrade to the latest ios
Here everything is fine for months

I have the latest iOS. In fact, I upgrade the OS every time it and update becomes available. I don’t run betas though.

My 2017 12.9 iPad Pro on latest OS still doing this time to time. It's pretty annoying. I cannot make it wake up from sleep state with neither power or home button for 5 or many more seconds. I have experience probably 25 times in total. I am still contemplating on getting it exchanged under the Apple Care as I am not sure if that it is legitimate reason for exchange or it will surely solve the problem.
