but noooo people want to look at pictures and album art an a tiny 2" screen

I think you are missing the concept of PalmPilots/CellPhones/iPods with picture albums. Of course it's not going to be a great picture on the screen. But it is nice to carry around pictures that you way want to show other people. I cant tell you how many times I have used my PalmPilot to show family pictures from variuos events.

Has anyone tried to sync a playlist containing a downloaded mp4 clip to your iPod and gotten a message that the video can't be synced to "this iPod"? Is this message new to iTunes 4.9?

You could certainly read into the message that you can't copy video to "this iPod" but you might be able to copy video to another iPod. Like, you know, an iPod video.

Not from MP4, but yes, I have seen this message with lots of files that QuickTime and iTunes understand that weren't supported by the iPod.
Is this message new to iTunes 4.9?
No.

Apple did update the specs and correct the thickness. The thing I still don't get however, is that now the colour screen U2 iPod and the colour screen 20 gig are thicker than the previous 20 gig. They're now the same thickness as the 30 gig. I thought the 30 gig was thicker due to the larger hard drive. Why are the new 20 gig models now thicker...it can't be because of the color screen?

It has a bigger battery that lasts 15h instead of the 12h of the original 20GB 4G iPod.

They're thicker

One thing i hate about the color ipods is the size! Those things are to thick thats why i liked the old 20 gig ipod. Are these new color ipods keeping the old 20 gig size or are they bigger like the previous color ipods?????

That was my concern, and unfortunately they are thicker. I liked how thin the 4G's were. The new colour screen 20 ipods are now the same thickness as the 30 gig was. It's still a lot thinner than the 60, but I was just hoping that they'd keep it the same size as the 4G, which I really liked. Oh well, as on poster commented, it might be because there is a larger battery and thus longer battery life. That at least makes me feel better.

Perhaps the new 20GB iPod is really just some leftover 30GB iPod photos with a firmware block on the other 10GB. ;-)

Just like some of the 4GB minis have a 5GB HDD in reality with a firmware block.

Where's my iBook :'(... Dell's website is getting more attractive everyday, especially with all the flyers they send me. I can get a laptop for £299 which is more powerful than Apple's current iBook at £699. Um... Apple... do something about this.

the cheapest dell laptop is a POS and it's £450, with a 1.3GHz celeron intel integrated POS graphics and a 15" 1024x768 display, so it's huge compared to the ibook but you have no extra space it's just streached out, no doubt the battery life is shorter, you will have to pay extra for xp pro, you will have to buy anti virus software and it's battery life will probablt be no where near as good as the ibooks, hmm, right.

Who actually uses their iPod for pictures. It's like cell phones, black and white means longer battery life, but noooo people want to look at pictures and album art an a tiny 2" screen
You forget that you can connect the iPod to a television with a simple cord and have an instant slideshow at friends or relatives.

Share with Flair: If you want to put on a really impressive show, use the optional iPod Dock or AV cable and plug iPod into a television or projector. Choose the perfect transitions and just the right music to complement the show. After all, you’ve got your favorite music tucked in right next to all your photos.

I was just wondering exactly the same thing

It looks to me as though NEW iPod = OLD iPodPhoto and they have just done away with the black & white screen iPods. Notice how there is no mention of iPodPhoto on the Apple Store now. Yet the rest of the Apple site still refers to the old b&w ipods and colour ipod photos. Very confusing!

Is it possible that the new iPod mini could be a 4Gb flash with a color screen?

there's no support for podcasting on generation two iPods.

i suppose i should just suck it up and buy a new one, but this REALLY pisses me off.

from playlist mag...

The new 20GB model is .06” thicker and .3 ounces heavier than the old 20GB model, but the exact same size (.63” thick) and weight (5.9 ounces) as the 30GB iPod photo, meaning that any accessories—cases, dockable speakers, and the like—that fit the 30GB photo should fit the new 20GB iPod perfectly. If you’re upgrading from an older 20GB 4th-generation iPod, all but the most form-fitting accessories should work with the new color screen version.

that should clear up some mis-conceptions

That's great but now the people that only want their iPod for music (me) there isn't a model that makes the most of the battery life/harddrive space/ size.

What? No Firewire?

Since getting a Mac mini back in February, I have been thinking about getting an iPod to replace my Rio mp3 player. Now Apple is going to charge an extra fee to get a Firewire cable that used to be in the box? Why can't they just sell the iPod without a cable, and let you pick the cable you want from a display next to the iPod? That way Mac users don't get stuck paying for something (a USB cable) that they will (probably) never use. I feel cheated!

I'm starting to think the same way.... :( :( :(

But you have to run windows. If you're willing to work on a computer running windows, you should've switched about 6 years ago. Why the heck do you own a mac? Why? Please tell me because for the last 10 years you could buy a faster machine from Dell running windows instead. Do it already.

still no audiobook playlist in itunes?

You'd think that they went to all the hassle of making Smart Playlists for nothing.

I agree that it might be slightly nicer for some people if they added a pre-packaged (and forced) playlist. Personally, I like the option of creating a Smart Playlist for any audio genre I want. And think about it, a Smart Playlist that is for the "Audiobooks" Genre is *exactly* what you're looking for, and should take about 10 seconds to set up.

Anyone who gets 12 hours of battery life on the 4G iPod, please raise their hand.

I listen to mine all day at work, 8 hours, with the backlight and EQ turned off, and it's dead right by the time I'm packing up. I'm considering getting a shuffle or something that can actually get battery life better than that. I doubt the "updated" (more like downgraded) iPods are the answer.

I have a mix of 224 Kbps AAC and iTMS songs. probably 3500 are my CDs, 500 - 600 are iTMS.

If I fly to Chicago (about two hours) and turn it off when I land, do my thing, and fly back that night (anohter two hours) the battery indicator is completely drained.

Gen4 40GB iPod. I use Etymotic ER-6i headphones, about 65% volume.

I got a 4G iPod and I didn't get 12 hours even when I first bought it  All my songs are 128kbps AAC's, no backlight (unless it's dark) and the EQ turned off. On average I seem to get about 6 hours through a playlist on my iPod. It's about a year old now, and it's the 20GB version.

Podcast Support in Older iPods

Maybe this isn't convenient enough, and I haven't tried any other newer iPods, but on my 30 GB 3G iPod, in the Playlists tab, there is a playlist called Podcasts.

Maybe this isn't as easy as other newer iPods, but there is 'support'. Older than the 3rd generation, I have not tried...

I totally agree... those are the ones in need of (minor) bumps... not the friggin' iPods...

Yeah, iPod shmiPod, I just don't care anymore  Where's my new - hopefully widescreen - iBook? These arent' even upgrades, it's just a cull of the iPod range.

I'm starting to worry that Apple might seriously think that we'll all wait 12 months for any new Mac hardware. I really don't care if a new model is an interim G4-closeout affair, but something has to happen soon, surely?

It's getting embarrasing...

...As for a faster CPU in the iBook versus the Pwerbook? Who cares about the iBook's CPU? Everyone I know is waiting for a better GPU and more RAM in the iBook. And maybe a 5400 RPM HDD.

I'm not really talking faster CPUs, or hard drive, or even standard RAM for the iBook - it's the form factor. It's tired, tired, tired.

That's the problem with "fashionable" computers - they soon go out of fashion.

One advantage of the "beige box" (and plain laptop) design school is that you keep the computer until its features are no longer adequate.

You don't buy a new one because you're embarrassed to be seen using the older version.
