ok I am finally ready to buy an iPod.

should I get the new 20GB or 30GB photo? 20GB is 269 and 30GB 299 with edu discount.

What's the difference? I'll probably only have to do the ipod-updater right?

Cases are the same size for color 20 and 30 photo. Only difference is 10 GB less for the new one and the price difference. The U2 20 GB color is a few mm thinner. The 30 GB seems to be the great deal - I've seen it at Amazon.com for $299 today w/o the edu discount. Makes the 20 GB look like less for more.

30GB it is!

podcast support for iPod Shuffle

here's what bugs me but doesn't seem to bother anyone elsel...why no podcasting support for the shuffle? Yes, i know, it has no screen, but whenever I get new music, I make sure to put it at the top of my Shuffle's playlist, so I'm sure to hear it and know what it is. I'd like the same option for Podcasts (but automatic), so that new podcasts automatically get put at the beginning of my Shuffle's playlist. That would be sweet---especially if there was an "only update podcasts" option in the preferences or a "autofill only podcasts" button or something.

just an idea.

I checked the Apple page and they must've updated it, the U2 iPod is the same thickness as the 20GB. Oh well...

Apple did update the specs and correct the thickness. The thing I still don't get however, is that now the colour screen U2 iPod and the colour screen 20 gig are thicker than the previous 20 gig. They're now the same thickness as the 30 gig. I thought the 30 gig was thicker due to the larger hard drive. Why are the new 20 gig models now thicker...it can't be because of the color screen?

They are really nice looking. I had been waiting for a mini update...but may just go ahead and get a new iPod, now I'm just not sure, they are so nice!

The "new" iPod is the iPod photo, right?

Did Apple change its mind about having a separate line of color/photo models or was this the plan all along?

Seems pretty clear it was more of a long term plan. Stage 1: Introduce the color models and milk the extra money out of people willing to pay for it. Stage 2: Drop the non-color models.

Number two. Why no updates to the iBooks?
Because they're closer to the Powerbook specs than they've ever been. Way too close. They can't justify any kind of real price difference between the lines if they're running the same processors at the same clock speeds, with all the extras already thrown into both packages. The Powerbook has hit a ceiling, and is not likely to go up much further, therefore the iBook has to be a step down enough to justify that difference in price.

How about the last iBook update:

iBook 12" 1.2 Ghz G4/256 MB Ram/30 GB/Combo/AE $999
iBook 14" 1.33 Ghz G4/256 MB Ram/60 GB/Combo/AE $1299
iBook 14" 1.33 Ghz G4/256 MB Ram/60 GB/SuperDrive/AE $1499

vs then current:

12.1" PowerBook G4 @ 1.33GHz, 256MB RAM, Combo drive. $1599
12.1" PowerBook G4 @ 1.33GHz, 256MB RAM, SuperDrive. $1799
15.2" PowerBook G4 @ 1.33GHz, 256MB RAM, Combo Drive. $1999
15.2" PowerBook G4 @ 1.5GHz, 512MB RAM, SuperDrive. $2499

Updates are always welcome..........but WHY always the iPod

Get your computer up to date  ;)

Thanks for this, I was actually looking for this information when I read his initial post. Facts are, the iBooks and PowerBooks lines were very similar once before, just as when you quoted. Apple could do it again, but will a marginal iBook update be acceptable regardless?

I just went to the buyers guide and clicked on the updates for each and sort of merged them together.

Seems tome that something is better than nothing. Not like most of us expect a ton since they will probably be switched to Intel fairly soon. A move to 5400RPM drives or something though would be a huge improvement.

The bitchin' is because we pretty much assume it'll be the phone. And we're bitchin' because some of us would actually like a new computer.

Or... it could be.... that we'll find something to bitch about regardless of what is announced or not announved... I know I will... that's what I do!

Maybe they were originally planning on selling different versions, but never sold off the first lot due to the god-aweful color scheme of the U2 iPod.

The color scheme, or there are not as many hardcore U2 fans as Apple thought.

I'll take my iPod without Bono's signature...... thanks.

i find it disturbing to see how ipods are bought like it's bread on this forum and in general...people are buying their 4th, their 5th, their zillionst ipod, boom, again 299€/$....

like 'that color screen does look attractive...i have a 20 gb ipod now, should i get a 30 gb ipod with color screen? i have it for 4 months and it's almost full with my 11 gb....'
or 'i want a new ipod, you know, i have it already for 6 months, time for a new one, you know, be the first in trends and all, you know'

it's so surreal and insulting...

yup , i agree, it's crazy. I am on the original 20 gig which cost me 500 $ + tax. The thing dropped off my tower and had to be sent to apple - the battery died and i just replaced it with a max capacity.. i don't care about it anymore cuz it will scratch so no more cases cuz it's coming up 3 years old.

A few things to note.. i get 18-22 hrs of battery life, i still have a 20 gig ipod - i don't care if it gets scratched.. it has a long battery.. what would persuade me to upgrade.. i think i'll probly have this thing another 3 years - unless they do a video pod.

how different is new ipod 60gb from ipodphoto 60gb?

is new ipod60 just rebranded ipodphoto60, or did they change/improve circuitry, display, or maybe firmware?

the reason i am asking is i just ordered the old ipodphoto60 and it is in the mail ( yes, i know i'm lucky ;) ). so, the question is to send it back and get a new thingie, or should i take it easy?

It sucks that there is no way to autosync to the shuffle like the other ipods, but I found that dragging the songs to the shuffle's list and then syncing put the podcasts first in the shuffle, even if they are not at the top of the list. At this stage I haven't decided if this is a good or a bad thing (what if I want my music first?).
Also the shuffle correctly bookmarks the podcasts, even if they are not converted to AAC.

Again with the asking:

What if someone bought an iPod last week, with the non-color screen option. Can they return their iPod and get a new one this week since it has been less than 14 days?

Mike
